If a band normally sells gold or platinum, and then suddenly they get a 6, 7, 10X platinum album, it means that the extra sales come from people who don't normally buy the albums. Then, when you see the popularity drop, those one-time album buyers are the first off the wagon. Those are truly the crossover albums. I'm thinking Def Leppard with Hysteria, Metallica's self-titled (the 'black album'), Whitesnake's self-titled (or 'the '87 album'), ZZ Top's Eliminator, AC/DC's Back in Black, Guns N Roses Appetite for Destruction, etc. When I was in high-school (the mid 1980's), this was the common behavior of kids at my school. They would buy 1 album from a band, whatever was popular at the time, and then move on to the next thing. People who followed a band for multiple albums were very much the exception.
I'd like to put a spin of this, artists that could be considered rock but also could be considered from other genres and generally rock audiences like'em. Prince and David Bowie would be the obvious choices. Female artists like Kate Bush, Tori Amos and Bjork. Some "funk rock" like George Clinton, Stevie Wonder. Also something like Depeche Mode and lots of synth pop like the one you mentioned Gary Numan. New Wave Devo, B-52's, XTC, Talking Heads. Then Bob Marley and Miles Davis, every rocker likes them. A large group of people that often don't listen to rock like Queen, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and the Beatles.
Motörhead is such a good example of a proto band that Martin's other outlet, Banger TV, wants to put them on top of every genre list as the godfathers. 🙂 They are also beloved because of their authenticity displayed by Lemmy's characteristic outspokeness. Nice that you touched upon the Crossover genre. What more than this tag could fit at least two audiences? Rap Rock, Rap Metal, Funk Metal, ... you can add more. A band which had one of the most mixed audiences I've ever witnessed was Depeche Mode, when I saw them on the Music For The Masses tour. From Goths to the casual music listener, Punks, Wavers, Ravers, all under one roof. Brilliant topic. Thank you!
I think Uriah Heep could be included in this they started out very heavy, but then with Demons and Wizards,The Magician's Birthday and Sweet Freedom they started getting into a little bit of prog and I guess they call it art music.
Cool topic! Thank you, Peter for bringing Suicidal Tendencies and Faith No More. These two are the first that came to my mind, when I read the title of this episode. I was never into thrash or speed, but I always loved ST.
Ric ocasek from the cars comes to mind especially his solo work check out his 1986 solo outing this side of paradise and on tracks such as coming for you and the title track are quite heavy thanks to guest guitarist Steve Stevens also his 1993 album quick change world rocks pretty hard to and also he produced a lot of alternative rock acts in the 90s including Weezer also check out suicides Alan vega 1985 solo album just a million dreams also produced by Ric
I think Red Hot Chili Peppers, Guns N Roses. Metallica and Kiss all fit this category and of the new artists once again I got to say Poppy though she is more of a cult artist, she has Pop, Alternative and Metal fans. How many artists can land tour supports for Gojira /Deftones which because of covid never happened. then last year she was support to Jane's Addiction/ Smashing Pumpkins.
Something about Gillan is always really dated to me, I just think a lot of the stuff really hasn't got much shelf-life beyond the time when it was recorded most of it just exists in that vacuum.
Frank Zappa's version of Whipping Post is absolutely unreal.

Agree....we cover this in the show with ACDC and the "Back in Black" album

I like your thinking...there are some legs here!

Like those picks JayJay...I need to do an episode on poppy...
@@RockDaydreamNation There's a interesting rabbit hole to travel down with her that's for sure.

Bob Marley. For me best example. Everybody is cool with Bob Marley.
That's a spot on pick! Thanks for the comment. Bob Marley was loved by the rock, pop audience to name a few....
