  • Leslie West (born Leslie Weinstein on October 22, 1945) is an American rock guitarist, singer and songwriter.
    Originally named Leslie Weinstein, West was born in New York City, grew up in Hackensack, New Jersey, and in East Meadow, Forest Hills and Lawrence.After his parents divorced, he changed his surname to West. His musical career began with The Vagrants, an R&B/Blue-eyed soul-rock band influenced by the likes of The Rascals that was one of the few teenage garage rock acts to come out of Manhattan itself (as opposed to the Bohemian Greenwich Village scene of artists, poets and affiliates of the Beat Generation, which produced bands like The Fugs and The Velvet Underground). The Vagrants had two minor hits in the Eastern US: 1966's "I Can't Make a Friend" and a cover of Otis Redding's "Respect" the following year.
    In September 2009, Leslie West: The Sound & The Story was released; a guitar instructional DVD from Fret12. The DVD includes the story and breakdown of Leslie's biggest hits, including "Mississippi Queen". Guest appearances from Zakk Wylde, Joe Satriani, Mark Tremonti, and Corky Laing are also included
    West continues to make occasional appearances on radio, notably on Howard Stern's radio show.

    Leslie West is a hero for 4 main reasons. 1. Losing & keeping off MASSIVE weight. 2. Beating drugs. 3. Beating cancer. 4. Became one of the most influential guitar players in the history of rock music.

    R.I.P Leslie West. Your music soothes us from the emptiness of your loss but also grieves us to how great the loss is. I will see you again

    Leslie is a witty and engaging guy and I'm sure he has a lot of good anecdotes. He should write a book. My sense is that his book would be more candid than most and therefore more interesting.

    What a character. Speaking as a Brit though, I wonder how fast paced New York must be if he's right that it's faster paced than London?

    Question: "Why do you use the name West rather than Weinstein?"

    Leslie West plays about as close to Jimi Hendrix as a guitarist can get. Some may say, "what the crap, there's no comparison". Hendrix played with his soul and somewhere early on, Leslie learned to pull notes out his guitar with his soul. Even better than Carlos, Jeff Beck, and Clapton. Listen to the guitar solo to Theme from Imaginery Western. Howard Stern truly said it correctly, that Leslie's solos can bring tears to your eyes. Yeah, Leslie - EVH is great. But, you've got tone and soul, bro.

    He is a very witty and funny guy actually but often hid his humor with unfortunate invectives. Making him scarier than need be. I also wondered why would a guy with so much going his way have to act that way. Again unfortunate. None the less I admired his talents and commitment to music.

    Mountain was a four piece outfit, not a "trio".

    • @d-d-i
      @d-d-i 4 роки тому

      The keyboard player was there for legal reasons, hence why Leslie & Co didn't think themselves as four piece band. Leslie had said that he hated that keyboard player and that he was useless in the overall sound of Mountain.
