@@gigi9301 bloody great idea. off topic....but....ive often wondered who foots the bill when rescue choppers, police, ses, ambos, fire brigade etc work heroically & tirelessly (often risking their OWN lives) to save daredevils or instagrammers who ignore signs, jump fences and stretch out on dangerous rocky outcrops or cliffs just to get that amazing photo or just to experience the thrill of it?
makes me wanna take away their passport, drivers license & social media account access for a couple years as punishment, to encourage them not to do such stupid shit again.

This happens more often than you would think on cruise ships. Not only are they floating Petri dishes, but they also seem to be a pretty good place to get away with murder.
I will NEVER go on a cruise. There are sharks in the water and on the ship!

The Virus is declining and on cruises, just like everywhere else, you have to be aware of your surroundings and exercise caution, all while having FUN ... which I have everytime I cruise.

In my opinion, these ships are really gross. I went once and it was misery all around- the smell of alcohol in the air, the crowd, the noise, etc...That was my first and last time.
I always thought that, even before covid. Add in the inability to escape from annoying co-cruisers, & you couldn't pay me to take a cruise.

My aunty was on cruise ship when Covid kicked off, for the last month and a half of her trip she had to stay on board while it came home. We felt so sorry for her until she got home and started wishing she'd stayed on the ship with the all inclusive meals and activities haha

The investigator interviewed only 6 crew members and no passengers!? That’s very suspicious.
I think there are so many potential dangers in a cruise, this investigation was definitely poorly conducted.
Sadly, for the investigators that is just one more case but for the victim’s family that’s everything, it’s a daughter they will never get to see again. I can’t even imagine the pain her family must have endured. Really tragic.

They could both guarantee your safety, but that would be so restrictive and tyrannical that no one would want it.
Everyone is ultimately responsible for them self, so be very careful who you associate with.

Thank you Dr. Grande, this analysis was spot on! I worked for the cruise industry for over 13 years and I've never heard of a guest being swept overboard. I have seen both crew and guests on the upper decks in treacherous conditions. If they loose their footing, they hit the deck, not go over the side. I think Newton's law of inertia takes care of that. They don't dangle from the railings like Jack and Rose in The Titanic. The ships side railings are actually higher than what most people perceive. If they go over it's because they voluntarily jumped, they were playing daredevil, or were murdered and dumped overboard by their killer. If the ship is in motion, unfortunately the body will be sucked underneath the boat and dismembered by the propulsion system, leaving little chance for recovery. A ship that size would have a few hundred cameras, and perhaps even more than the average vessel, due to the high population of children on board. It's hard to believe that security could not have connected the dots to figure out what happened. They haven't just fallen off the turnip truck . Many of the chief security officials on ships are seasoned former officers from Scotland Yard or accomplished Middle Eastern security specialists. The cameras positioned on the bridge, which overlooks the crew pool area, would definitely have spotted her image if she had decided to jump over the side or met with foul play. Even at night this area is well lit and visible to passengers on the ships 24 hr CCTV system. Somebody saw something. You have reminded us that the industry still has a long way to go in terms of public accountability. I remember when a guest was murdered by her husband on the inaugural cruise of an RCI ship, New York investigation was on top of the situation right away. It's a shame the home port officials couldn't have been involved. Things might have been different for her family.

Cruise industry is the worst when it comes to complying with basic standards of corporate responsibility, be that social or environmental. Exploitative, dirty, irresponsible...

No way would I take a cruise, especially after hearing some of the "behind-the-scenes" stories from crew members. They're not as safe and sanitary as one would like to believe.
Exactly. So many cases of women disappearing. The cruise lines cover it up to protect their “reputation”
Its really easy to kill someone on a Cruise because in some waters between country barriers there is no police responsible for an investigation. Its essentialy a lawless area. Then victims who go over board are not likely to be found due to exposure to the elements. Also their is always the wave or suicide excuse. Since you basically just have to push someone of a ledge there are almost no traces left. Not to mention cruises are dirty and you can be stuck with annoying people.
I don't blame you for not wanting to go on a cruise. I've been on a few of them and they're not all what they're cracked up to be.

(just for the sake of my childs memory and privacy) ...like ...possibly an acute drug problem?
If she was the only person swept overboard, then it doesn't really qualify as a crimewave.

my mom used to work on two massive cruise ships and traveled the world couple of times. the stories from 'behind the scenes' are shocking, even for tourist industry veterans.

alright, some details I'm comfortable sharing:
I'm from Europe, this is about 12 years ago and I was a teenager. my mom started going abroad for work, mainly in the tourism industry.
after few months of Ireland, mom was hired at the biggest cruise ship in the world (back then). she was responsible for high class customers who would go on the extended world tour. my mom provided butler / assistance service for a handful guests per round. the guests she was in contact with spent more than 250,000 Euro for their stay, off board activities not included. she encountered famous people couple of times but never worked directly with them. the clientele was mostly families with small children and retired couples.

I have been watching a program series about deaths on Cruise ships. Absolutely amazing. The industry does everything possible NOT to file reports and shut down investigations.

"Cruise Ship Killers." It is on the "True Crime Network", but you might be able to find it some place else, too.
@@susanmann5286 I think you should research that a bit more. Cruise Ship Killers is a HIGHLY dramatized and in some cases outright made up stories of cruise ship deaths. Many of the cases they portray are 'based on' a true story and when you read into the actual story, they take gigantic liberties and include things that outright didn't happen for dramatic effect.
If you are taking that program as fact, you may need to take a step back. There have been episodes where a thorough investigation was conducted and the show portrays it as if it wasn't by leaving out key details.
My wife and I are frequent cruisers - on our 14th this summer - and know people in the industry and we laugh about that show because of how unrealistic and overdramatized it is. We actually stopped watching it after half a season because it was borderline absurd. Way too much conjecture and speculation and little focus on fact.
I went on a cruise to the Bahamas once in 2016. It was fun but it does strike me as a likely place for foul play to occur.
I will never take a cruise, it has never seemed safe to me.
There are essentially no laws that cover International cruises and hence no LE agency has jurisdiction!

They sound like fun stuff!
They're extremely unhealthy for the environment as well. They give off the same carbon footprint as thousands upon thousands of cars. The pollution they give off is _so_ bad that if you live in the city they port in scientists are literally able to determine that you'll get sick/sicker due to constantly breathing in their pollution. They are legally required to hook up to shore power and can't use the full capabilities of their engines until they're a certain distance away from shore.
That's just a couple things. There's far more. I've forgotten a lot but there's a host of reasons to not support the business of cruise ships

I think they absolutely know what happened to her. There are cameras all over the place except for the rooms.
I remember this case, this one and ALL cruise ship disappearances never made sense. I used to work for a cruise company shoreside and let me tell you there’s almost always someone passing away onboard usually elderly people. There are more reasons than tax breaks for registering in the Bahamas and none of them are good, awesome video doc love ya.

I thought the only reason for going on a cruise ship was to force food on one end and pass it trough the other. What is really so attractive about it to go on with it? Can't people just eat at home, in a restaurant, or go on a picnic? I understand the industry creates job but can't make sense out of going on a trip like this.
To Troy and Sherry, the rules set onboard cruise ships would be governed by the home port, so they are not as strict as they would be in say, USA or Britain. The minimum wages, similar thing. Most people who work on cruise ships work long hours (much longer than maximum hours set by places like the USA) for low pay, insurance requirements are less strict etc. All this exploits those workers to lower the fares. Then again, most of these workers would have basically no income at all if they didn't work on these ships because they are often from poor countries where finding work is difficult and likely hazardous. So they are victims, but voluntary ones because the alternatives for them are worse.
To MRooz, it's much more enjoyable being on a cruise ship. The laziness, the food is top notch gourmet and prepared for you, and no clean-up. You usually don't pay extra for any food, it's included in the fare. With certain passes, basically unlimited alcohol (though it may cost more for the pass than you would spend at home unless you drink a lot.) You spend your days lying in the sun looking at the sea or a coastline, can do activities while onboard with others that you would have a difficult time doing at home (or motivating to do), then you reach a destination and can visit. All for what is usually not much more than jet fare to another country. For many, it's a great vacation. Of course, it helps if you come home too.
@@kenmore01 Thanks for expanding your explanation! I've heard a lot of people also say that it's nice to see more than one place, but only have to pack/unpack one time (unlike land tours). I also feel sorry for all the dump sites into the water; I have heard that the ships dump huge amounts of waste into the ocean, including raw sewage, non-recyclable trash, who knows what else, and wonder how well that is monitored if it's the open ocean and who regulates that?
Just a reminder I'm not diagnosing anybody; I'm only speculating what could be happening on a cruise ship like this.

I have heard a lot about the Bahamian police and I think your analysis is spot on. That poor performance was deliberate for many reasons; chiefly the ones you gave. A complete and transparent investigation would be anathema to Disney. Disney is about surface appearance and has always been so.

On a different video on this, I watched maybe 6 months ago on UA-cam, they interviewed crew members, and they said there are cameras literally everywhere on that ship. There were cameras in the front of the ship, and they know exactly what happened, but they won’t release the video. Or they destroyed it.
I’m going to assume though, that they showed the parents the video, and that’s what led them to choosing a settlement deal with Disney.

One of the best kept secrets in the cruise industy is the amount of women who go missing on these ships.

This is a really sad one. Of course I feel connected to it because I’m writing from near where she lived in Chester and it was naturally a huge deal here but any time a young person goes missing, especially with no explanation, it throws the world off its axis, nothing makes sense. My heart really goes out to her parents, no settlement from Disney could ever make up for the loss of a child. I wish she was out there somewhere but tragically, it’s just not likely. I was really interested in your analysis of causes of deaths or disappearances on cruises, Dr Grande, that was a wonderfully logical thing to do in a case where all manner of wild theories have been explored in the understandable void of answers. Tragically young people are particularly vulnerable to misadventure; they generally don’t yet know they are mortal and worse still, haven’t always learned to value themselves enough to treat themselves with the care they were taught to give others. As a society we need to invest more in our children, and this is no disrespect to Rebecca’s parents or anyone else’s,I’m talking to myself, to all of us; a foundation of confidence, self respect and compassion for the self, as well as others, could go a long way towards protecting young people. Imho, we spend way too much time teaching kids about how to pass exams and spend nowhere near enough time helping them, and ourselves with them, to be happy, have good relationships and to eventually become good parents, surely that’s more important than anything else?

I agree completely...especially valuing themselves. I heard she went straight from a party, had men's clothes on, and made a phone call (or got one from her boyfriend) that was very negative. The person who asked her if she was OK said she was either crying or visibly upset. The cruise ship said she jumped overboard via camera footage. She was known to have depression and used to call her parents everyday, which would have been odd for a 20-plus yo. I think that or she did something dangerous like sit on that wall and fell overboard. Such a sad ending to a young life but I don't think it was foul play at all. Poor young lady. God bless.

I think the 10% murder statistic may be skewed by the lack of adequate investigation of incidents - possible murder cases are not rigorously pursued so many may go uncounted. FYI, I love your sense of humor. Your dry wit makes your podcasts so fun to watch despite the gravity of many of the subjects.
It’s an unnecessary cover up. Disney fanatics would still buy from Disney even if the story came out. They’re a horrible company for letting this happen over a 1% loss in business.

I had a strange theory pop into my head. Someone could have totally stuffed her into a suitcase and they would have just blended right in on camera and to others with luggage. They could have done something with her body once they got somewhere that was more secluded and away from the ship after departing.

As long as Disney, and police records are withheld from the family, it's just going to foster more distrust and fear with potential new customers. It makes you wonder how good of an investigation either one of them did. Disney, typically, only cares about their bottom line. I doubt they will hand anything to the parents. Such a sad thing to have happened to this girl. It's been made unbearable for her parents, who deserve to know what happened to their child. Thanks for covering this, Dr.Grande. Altho money will never replace their daughter, I'm sure the parents did indeed get a big payout from Disney to keep quiet for really something Disney wasn't responsible for (her either jumping or doing something dangerous bc of depression). She was caught on camera coming from a party wearing men's clothes and talking to her boyfriend on the phone with upsetting news...upsetting enough that someone would ask her If she was OK. And she had a history of depression. I just don't see any foul play here. My sympathies to her parents. God bless.

One of many reasons I’m not interested in going on a cruise. There’s just so little accountability that if you are a victim of a serious crime, there’s not much motivation to look hard into it.

This filled in some key information, thank you! I listened to 2 podcasts about this story, and neither mentioned the settlement. That makes sense for why this case was dropped, that Disney probably does know more, and why it hasn't been shared to the public.

If you look at a picture of the crew pool area, there are ladders that go up pretty high and it might be possible to climb up to the front of the ship and fall or jump off into the ocean.

I agree! This case and the Amy Bradley cruise ship disappearance. Both are so sad. But I can bet that Disney knows what happened they have cameras in their cameras. I don’t think they would withhold video if there was any foul play, Iam thinking accident or suicide. I feel so bad for her family.

I've known a few people who have worked on cruises - their stories are nasty. I'll never go a cruise, not only because of the unsanitary conditions (though that's a big part of it) but mainly because of the crews. I don't want to be near that.

I have been on cruises and there is no way anyone can fall overboard accidentally, under normal circumstances on a ship even if you are drunk. The sides are too high unless you climb up and/or have been thrown over.

A friend who grew up in the Bahamas once told me if you want the police to show up: $50. If you want them to catch somebody: $500. If you want them to catch the right person: $10,000.
This does seem like a repetitive pattern with cruise ship companies. Another disappearing person from a cruise ship that sounds like was swept away as quietly as possible with little care for finding the person.
Once again, masterfully navigating the boundary between humour and the utmost respect for the victim & her friends and family. It's a shame that law enforcement are so often the butt of the joke, I guess when they do a good job there is less to talk about and the cases are perhaps less compelling as they are more often solved. Great video, love your work.
