Hands up those who thought Gildersleeves was the Holy Grail. I’ve been a PiL fan since the beginning. Never thought I would see anything like this. Great quality. Need more please.
This line-up of PiL was surely one of the finest bands in the history of rock. They seem like they could have done more, but I'm grateful for what we got. Thank you for this!
Holy sh*t!! Just discovered all of these Don Letts film clips! A treasure trove of amazing history caught on camera! The Slits, John Lydon in Jamaica, the late 70's punk scene and now PIL in all their glory!! A moving and documented Martin Atkins on drums! Amazing footage! Thank you Don for preserving truly important documents in music history!!
Seen them many times through the years...first show they did in San Francisco was beyond epic...og lineup & Flipper opened -1980...SOMA cultural center...I felt even back then that I was lucky I was there...Wobbles bass & Martin Atkins drums shook that place thoroughly...opened with Fodderstompf...Careering was otherworldly...you get the idea
Would've been phenomenal to see this era of PiL... I can only dream (not that they're not good now but man I can't get enough of Levenes guitar, that style is brilliant and is why Corporate is probably their best song in years)
Looks like Keith is showing Jah where to put his fingers on the neck for the song. That's how it starts. Look where Mr Wobble has gone with his instrument since. Humble beginnings!
Was it Dec' 25th & 26th or just the one night ? , Playing the first lp ( - 'fodderstompf' ) public image (twice) & 'belsen was a gas' (that fell apart )
Pil should've really ended after the ritz riot show. Even commercial zone wasn't on par with the first 3 albums and after that lydon should've just gone solo and not taint the name of PiL
Yeah I think most people that bought records or saw PIL in the early years would agree , possibly losing one original member ,Wobble -they were still PIL, but when Keith went that was it really & they then became 'the John Lydon showband' - the absolute last straw was the '83 tour & the 'Live in Tokyo' lp that accurately catches just how awful they'd become...
@@whatamalike Are you sure you mean the unofficial 'Commercial Zone' (that was really Keith's lp - who was responsible for its release)... & not the actual released PIL lp 'this is what you want...' ?
The first Line Up was the best one.I don't know by what Lydon was driven to kick Out these great musicians one by one? I thought they were good friends?
Thats what a 'Soundcheck' is - checking the acoustics ,tuning ,mixing board & how the instruments sound together.....(its easy to spot the part of 'Attack' is from the soundcheck & 'Theme' from the gig due to change of clothes..& there being an audience !)
When this lineup came through San Francisco I figured rock and roll was totally dead and it was all upwards from here... what a hilarious joke!! But this footage is AMAZING...
Sad to inform everyone, but Keith passed away yesterday, 11/11/22. A true genius, I’ll miss him immensely…
A brilliant, bold, innovative artist and a good soul. Keith will never be forgotten!
This is fkn gold. Over 40 years on to see the original line up live. I never thought I'd see the day.
What he said.

This is incredible footage. This is literally one of the very first gigs they ever played.
Keith Levene showing Wobble how to tune the bass ... great ! Sorry , THANKS a LOT for posting this rare footage , the quality is astounding !
Rest in Peace Keith Levene 😪🙏
You can really here the Syd Barrett influence on Keith playing amazing, just greatness
Sad to hear Keith Levine, founding member of the Clash, and In PIL has died.
Condolences to all his loved ones. Another artist gone too soon.

3:02 Keith's guitar like a radial metal cutter tearing through reinforced concrete. (but, now, rest in peace)
amazing Just love them
R.I.Peace, Keith Levene 💔
Goddamn this is priceless.

Quite an exquisite arrangement and the vocals are lovely. Thank you for this iconic upload and hats off to you. 🎩
I saw them at the Rainbow London 1978, incredible.

@@andchat6241 it was Boxing Day. I was a 15 yr old hippie. No one even looked at me. they all looked like me a month earlier lol
@@robertlivingstone3364 Christmas day .. I remember it well
And me

Obviously a big fan of the band. 😉

So fucking incredible!!!!!!!!!!! Dear KL Rest In Peace 🙏💔😓💔🙏
"Not a band, a company". But a really cute company, and a good company to listen to.
I saw that Tom Snyder interview when it was on that night. Lol
The best
Rip
Amazing guitarist
I was born 5 years too late to see this happen. Damn it.
❤️
Amazing footage! This group had such promise. IMO there is no PiL without Wobble and Levene.
Absolutely agreed.

Jim walker on drums too
Keith showing Wobble the bass hence why he played sitting down, wobble yet hadn’t been in a band
Hey I thought the same about gildersleeve. That was pil evolution never seen b4
The single down vote is a U2 fan.
Influenced so many bands from the chili peppers to stones roses
holy shit
Rest In Power Keith!!
❤❤❤❤
First ever gig in Brussels? Or second gig in Paris?? Wow! (I think it's the former)
So the ' Christmas gig ' at the Rainbow (London) wasn't their debut....I didnt know that
The first Line Up was the best one.I don't know by what Lydon was driven to kick Out these great musicians one by one? I thought they were good friends?
Ego. Ego destroys most bands.
@@meciocio All being on different drugs was also a problem, I think.
Jim Walker said he quit when Lydon wanted the band to sign a contract where they were working for him and not with him
look at Killing Joke this is the career PiL could have had
RIP, KL
Ace
where's the bass ?
I think it’s Paris dec 78
john a man who wants change but not sure what it would look like
Sounds the exact same as one of thier songs rather than a sound check.

Stick to your M.o.R then.
Ends too soon
We need the full gig uploading!
sad .....
Drugs musta been good🙄🙄🙄 sounds awful
Awful mix
It's not so bad on the actual CD bootlegs, the videos were probably from the camera mics
