As a sports journalist from India (I was reporting the entire series for Press Trust of India), I was sitting in the press box at the ground that day. I had witnessed this up, close and personal. Now I am 64. Anyway, after this game, we travelled to Lahore where the great Abdul Qadir had invited me to his sports goods shop called Imran-Qadir Sports Goods. Imran Khan was his partner in that business. Inside the shop, I interviewed Qadir . I had asked him: "What do you think of Sachin?" Qadir said: "You have all seen Viv Richards. But this chotu (Sachin) will soon make you forget Viv. Ek din ayega jab yeh sabko kha lega." How true the prophesy was.

you can hear the commentators in great surprise and shock when sachin hit the 2nd six to Abdul Qadir discussing that they haven't seen gavaskar stepping out and hitting like that to Abdul Qadir ever...That was the introduction of SACHIN to the cricketing world....!!!

And another big difference between him and other ruthless batsmen was, that Sachin was very down to earth. I never saw him provoking any junior bowler by verbal abuse or over celebrating. He was very composed and thats the reason for his longetivity and the respect he got was more than his cricketing skills. Dhoni is next Indian cricketer to have got this respect

I remember seeing this live!! Sachin exploded onto the international scene against arguably one of the best teams back then. Qadir & Mushtaq were class spinners & Musthaq's inexperience is not enough excuse because Sachin was a greenhorn himself. Sixes were a rare occurrence back then & to see 5 of them by a youngster sent our whole neighborhood into a wild frenzy. Of course, Pakistan won that match, but Sachin's exploits were unbelievable.

This over was defining moment in Indian cricket. I was in school and we saw that last 6 of Javed in Sharja. And then it haunted indian fans for next three years. Salim ,Malik, Basit ali, Javed won many impossible matches agains india. Every where Pak was snatching matches from India. 1983 magic was getting pass and we knew we dont have extraordinary talent who will attack and take attack to opposition. That time we knew only one such player that was Viv Richards.
It was famous pak tour. One day match cancelled and there was friendly match. I was with my uncle seeing this match. Pak had best bowling attack with Kadir, Mustak and their fast battery. K Shrikant was not able to keep pace. Strike rate increasing and then we saw this over. It impacted psychologically to all. First time in the life I saw one Indian throwing ball out of boundary in pressure situation and to one world class baller. It was sheer aggression with bat talking to opponent: "Jitna bologe utna thukoge (more you sledge me, I will punish you severely) ". Only would have imagine by Sir Viv Richards. And rest was history. Sachin kept on playing with passion and with aggression. We inspired, many players dreamt of playing such cricket. That tour was revealed the true character of him and changed the course of Indian cricket.

I remember this match. It was an exhibition match and while India was mainly fooling around pakistan was playing seriously. Until Tendulkar hit out we would have lost by a huge margin. In the last over 20 runs were required. Many a champion batsmen havent scored that many against wasim, what chance did a 16 year old have. But it was a big scare. That's all we hope from our team. Even if they lose they shoild fight

Scoring runs is one thing. His skills, game awareness, presence of mind, humbleness, controlled aggression, determination, commitment, etc are qualities that you will not find in one single person.
After retirement, he is living a luxurious life. But still now show off, even in interviews he is polite and very gentle while talking. Very special cricketer and I don't think anyone can have a journey like him. People can break one or two of his records. But having so many records in own name, is amazing.
People should not forget, he was an allrounder. He has scored more than 35000 international runs and 200 wickets.

  • @alexkarthick

I have watched it on live TV. I think it was a reduced over match due to rain and not awarded ODI status or something. The talk was about a 16 yr old debuting for India. I as a kid was too excited to see a senior kid batting. From absolute defeat by a large margin Sachin single handedly brought the scores so close. In the end, it took another legend in Wasim to bowl consistent yorkers and full length deliveries in the last over to deny India a win. Nevertheless, a star is born and we at that time know that India will win against Pakistan consistently in future. 😊👍

Barring all differences ,the sportsman in the legendary Abdul Qadir is evident here.He threw a ´challenge´ to the 16year old kid and applauded when he was hit for a ´six´!one more thing evident was Kris Srikkanth matching himself by running risky runs as he trusted the kid(sachin) before anyone else!Great cricket by both the countries.

Sachin was such a explosive batsman that no one can even see in this era of t20.he could hit six on bouncer too.
He was the one who spread the name of India in the world. Those who didn't like cricket could also be attracted towards him. Those days were dream for Indian fans. What were those days when we used to see sachin batting on road, market, radio everywhere it was like the world used to stop while he was batting.i was very lucky to have witnessed his batting since 1999 wc.i still remember that world Cup when tent was prepared in my courtyard for people from the village to come n watch the match. It was a one in billion experience for me.
