  • A lot of people have been asking about this bus so I thought I would do a video on it. It is a 1958 GMC that has been sitting for I don't know how many years. I've never been to interested in things like this bus but it has opened my eyes to how cool these things can be. I hope you enjoy this vid as much or more than I enjoyed making it. Thanks

    Just came across your posting! I can furnish a little FYI on the bus from my memory bank! First, it is a PD-4104. The engine is a 6-71 and turns CCW. You'll need to know this if you ever have to replace the starter, for example. It was manufactured with 12 volt positive ground, but may well have been converted to negative ground, which is pretty easy, and cheap if you have a generator, not so cheap if you have an alternator. There is a battery cut off switch in the baggage compartment, just to the forward side of the battery compartment. To engage reverse, shift into first gear, push and hold the REV button, and shift into second. This should put you into reverse. The reverse solenoid on the transmission is very similar to a starter solenoid. If the engine is running, the air compressor will be turning. If you get no air then, check the air governor on the compressor. This is what tells the compressor when to pump or not. Compressor is on your right, mounted to the engine, about 4' up from ground level.

      @@paxhumana2015 Trust me it was not there from the factory. And its only a class 3 hitch. You can flat tow a small car but its not going to haul no huge trailer with it. And even towing a small car this bus will be lucky to not be doing 35mph climbing even modest hills. While the old 2 stroke diesels were dependable as hell they are not all that powerful.

    • @macelius
      @macelius 3 роки тому +2

      @@davefroman4700 You're right, right now it should only be towing a car on all four wheels, even if the hitch is strong, but while they don't make a lot of power they do make a good bit of torque. With keeping the conversion itself light, a small turbo (or big one with turbo pistons), some bigger injectors, a bigger radiator, and a hitch that reaches all the way under the cradle to the torque rod mounts (so it can actually handle some tongue weight) and it could probably pull 5k or more on a trailer. Still gonna be in low gear on hills, but so are the semis, and a sprayer on the radiator wouldn't hurt either.

      My old man has one, it's okay, but they're a pain to drive in or too near town. Or over a mountain pass. Engine's a hassle to work on, and there's a house worth of wiring snaking all over the bus. He keeps all the windows covered in heat reflective foam insulation shutters just to keep from losing all his heat, and that's after he took most of them out and welded over them.
      Plenty of room, though. I want him to add a roof porch but he's pretty resistant.

It was a 40' city bus that he also converted into a motor home. You should keep it and refurbish it as a Cars and Cameras project and use it when you travel around. • @overdrive39
      @overdrive39 3 роки тому +1

      @@isaacitllbefine7231 They were repainting the whole bus trying to get it ready for use, and wanted some murals on it. They left it up to me to do just that. They had a friend of theirs Lyle Lewis help them paint the bus and he knew I airbrushed. There is a little secret on one of the panels (the deer scene) there is a bunny hiding in the grass. It is kind of my signature Easter egg if you will. I can send you my phone number if you like and we can talk about it in better detail. I am glad you are stoked about having the bus and not just going to scrap it. I was told they took that bus all over the US.
