- This game kinda gets lost in the shuffle because it happened so long ago, it was a semfinal matchup, BUT this definitely was one of the best international games EVER played. :-)
Roberto Luongo was insane at Florida the first time but got 0 press. The fact is this guy should have EASILY won the Vezina in 2004 and 2007. He was by far the best goalie in the world from 2004-2010 in my view.
Agreed. I saw this match at the ACC as part of my 17th birthday and I will never forget it. The Czechs had such a formidable team and showed a lot of resolve in coming back numerous times against Canada. Classic match!
I remember watching this when I was 12, screaming at the TV and flopping in and out of my seat like a freaking fish out of water. What a game this was! Still remember that feeling
This was one awesome game. The Czech's have always played Canada well, for over 50 years now. This team came into Toronto and took our (Canada's) own hard hitting, get the puck deep mentality and almost beat us. This game was so good, made the final vs Finland seem boring.
I remember this game. Canada was completly OWNED by the czechs. They were lucky they won and could then beat Finland in the final, in a much easier game.
lecavailer definitely didnt deserve the penalty he got that gave the czechs the tieing power play goal, but he got his redemtion in the overtime. extremely exciting game of hockey, possibly the best ive ever seen. I will always fear and respect the czech hockey team. seems like 90% of chechs in the NHL are the underappreciated and underrated players and when you put a team of those kind of players togteher, they sure show you something. looking forward to world championships :)
This was our last chance to see Mario at a high level. He played a few months of NHL in 05-06 before retiring. He was almost 39 here and still one of the best players on the ice that whole tournament. It was only the 3rd time he'd been able to wear the Canadian uniform internationally. Injury kept him out of the '91 Canada Cup and '96 World Cup and he was retired from 1997-2000 so he never played in Nagano.
Wait, I thought you were talking about the World Cup in 04 now you're talking about these Olympics? If you're talking about the Olympics then I hope you realize, if you watched Canada play, they clearly outplayed everyone they faced mostly because they have better talent. It's not like Dan Bylsma isn't a good coach for the US, They just couldn't match up against our defense who basically carried the team. Subban the Norris Trophy winner couldn't even crack the lineup because we were so good. Just because they didn't run up the score against Norway and Latvia they were an inferior team to USA? USA practically lost to Russia if it wasn't for that stupid disallowed goal. That doesn't make sense to me. There's more to hockey than just scoring lots of goals. You need to be good at both ends of the ice. Latvia had a good Canadian coach (Ted Nolan) which is why they played so smart I'll give you that we do have smart coaches. As for the Czech Republic I think everyone in the hockey world agrees that coach you had was an idiot. If you had Hejda, Polak, Vrbata, and Hudler you could have competed for a Bronze medal instead of being one of the weakest teams in the tournament. No disrespect but on paper even then they would not be as good as Sweden (when Backstrom was healthy) and still weren't good enough to get a Gold over Canada or USA. Pavelec is an average goalie in the NHL so I don't think he'd handle either of us. But the thing is, our organization is so good that's why we succeed. The head coach Babcock works as a unit with our scouts and our management. The management works with the scouts to pick the team, Babcock and his assistants, who are all successful NHL head coaches, just focuses on coaching. You need good organization that picks the best players but also coaches who just focus how to play the game to allow the players to win. I get the feeling the head coach for the European countries seem to control everything such as team selection. That's not good and needs to change because it's impossible for the coach to do everything.
A coach like that would have to prove himself in the toughest league in the world, the NHL before he is the coach of Canada. A coach like that would not have control of team selection because a group of managers do that TOGETHER. His assistants who are proven NHL coaches help him coach. We have ORGANIZATION. That's why we are able to have the best players playing, have them playing to the best of their ability and that's why Canada wins 4 titles in the last 5 tournaments which used all our best players (2002 Olympics, 2004 World Cup, 2010 Olympics, and 2014 Olympics). That's what takes away the corruption and keeps us consistent. I'm not trying to mock you, I'm trying to give you some knowledge as you are giving me so we learn from each other. People grow by sharing knowledge and I appreciate what I learned from you about Czech hockey. I don't like hearing an excuse about the amount of registered players. I'll use football as an example. Argentina has 300,000 registered players while USA have 4,000,000 but do you think USA is a better football country than Argentina? Czech Republic actually have the 3rd most registered players in the world at ice hockey. I hope Czech Republic can challenge us again soon.
As I said, I do agree that Canadian system is an example other countries associations should follow. Not mainly because it takes away the corruption, for corruption is simply caused by mentality which is again effected by the economy standards, but it definitely takes away favoritism and personal interests by taking the crucial decisions away from the coach. The roster. Hadamczik didn't send an invite to J. Hudler for he had a bad dispute with him years back, when Hudler openly criticized his work. Then after been kindly refused couple of other invites, he did send one to J. Hudler, but than Hudler turned him down for he should have sent one immediately. Another fact is that if I'm not mistaking one of the players he put on the roster is his son in law. Niiiiiice. In Canada each name goes trough elaboration by highly competent committee and voted in. I know your system that much, and absolutely agree with it. Now, when it comes to number of registered players: first: You simply can't compare football or soccer which ever one you were referring to...those two worlds have nothing in common. second: It's definitely not an excuse, it's a simple fact and had it been the other way around, you'd say the same thing and you know it. You have 6:1 odds to find a better talent in a harvest like that. It's like saying Slovenija, (who's team I loved this Olympics for they played an awesome hockey and very entertaining) has the same chance for continuous success as Canada, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Czechs or the Slovaks, having only about 900 registered players. They can even bite a medal in a future, but to expect a continuous success is nonsense. Another thing is, and you can feel free to take this as criticism, is the fact that which ever Canadian I have a debate about hockey, counts tournaments, but don't include the IIHF championships. Hey, that's something that sounds so alibistic. Those Championships also represent each countries systems. Every time Canada fails to grab a medal, all I hear is ''who gives a fuck about IIHF Champ-s, we didn't have our best players there'', but neither had anyone else. It's about playing with what you have and fight for the title. What other events we have left in this fantastic game to watch our teams play each other? And I'm not sure that Canada's best teams are necessarily those with the biggest names, because just as with the Czechs or especially with Russians, it proved wrong many times. Crosby was great this tournament, but was completely shot down against us the last time we met him...or they tried to give the ''C'' to Getzlaf on one of the IIHF Chmps and he completely failed. This was well balanced team and it was a team in the real sense of the word, that's why the won the Olympics. What I liked most about this team, they really adjusted to the bigger ice rink. Nobody, and I repeat NOBODY is trying to deny the religiously serious way you take this sport, that's something we admire, at least the real fans in our country. But unfortunately it also comes with a huge portion of ignorance towards others. Towards changes that might bring the two worlds a lot closer. I wish these two hockey worlds could find a way to a better communication in rules, size rinks and other stuff concerning the game. I wish Canada and the hockey world overseas would finally see the importance of IIHF and give it the prime meaning it's meant to have, for it's everybody's game now. I watched the 2004 World cup few times over and over and there is no way that I can see it different the next time. First time you watch a game, there is a patriotic feeling involved and effects one's judgement, but when you see it few times and put yourself in a position of a neutral spectator, you will see the truth. The Czechs were the better team in overall appearance in this match up, yet you need to score more goals than the opponent to win and that's a simple fact. Was an unbelievable match though, far better than the final VS Finland. That reminded me of the Russian comments of our Gold from Nagano. Russian media called us lucky. Well, everybody needs luck, but if this team didn't deserve a bit of it, than I don't know who ever really did. If they were objective enough they would see that they had a sixth player on the ice in the referee and we were still the better team. It was McCreary's worst performance ever. Unlike them, even Canadian press admitted that the better team won after Canada lost in the semifinal, which made me feel so good about Canadians, Instead of ruining the hotel rooms like the team USA, they took the loss like gentlemen. Another element that other countries are missing, is the Canadian mind set of winners. I admire this and think it's very important in youth development program. I wish the Czech could overpass there national pride and accept things from Canadian system and apply them in ours. They keep telling the public we don't have a coach...ok, so The Slovaks hire the coach we don't have. Vujtek is a very good coach with a good history. Or highly respected Riha who coaches in KHL. If not, you can always hire a Canadian, I'm sure the players wouldn't mind. Look what Ted Nolan did with the Latvian team. Take another example in Switzerland. Just get rid of this hockey tumor called Hadamczik, before the patient (Czech hockey) dies. Anyway, I like talking to you, You are obviously hockey educated and not just throwing up beer wisdom. I also hope we can challenge you soon, for now we'll rather stick to Austria or Slovenia, maybe Poland or Hungary in couple of years.
Well, the prick is finally out of the picture and Ruzicka is back with Spacek as assistant, so we might be looking at a brighter future. The competence finally took over.
what a breathtaking match this was! I dont give a shit we have lost - the game was amazing! Canada rulezzz and always will, that´s for sure. cant wait Vancouver 2010 :) greetings from the CZE
I don't deny soccer status as a global sport. It can indeed be exciting when the occasion is big. But generally, average hockey game is way more exciting than a soccer one. And if you get to see a match like this, it is just plain awesome.
@currentriverpat I agree, this game is one of the most underrated games in recent history. The intensity of this game was great, and the Cze played Canada almost perfectly.
best match ever, i remember, how we got back to the match with goal, 6 second after Canada's goal in the 3rd period. But in OT V. Lacavalier ended this amazing match. I swear, i will definitely remember his name to the end of my life ...
Man please dont give me a hope, we are irrelevant hockey coutnry nowadays. I still like our boys as long as i can see they left everything on the ice, but our hockey is drowning like a rock in the ocean and its already too deep to see the light... Watching our hockey now is so heartbreaking i almost feel like a traitor to my country for following my father steps instead of playing hockey and do my best to keep our hockey to be a national gem it used to be for more than a century... Anyways thank you for kind words not many people knows czech rep. used to be a hockey powerhouse nowadays!
damnn i remember that.. marty brodeur had injured himself!! and luongo replaced him! .. i remember after canada scored, a few seconds after czech republic tied up.. AND the goal by lecavalier.. he missed his first shot i was like ''OH SHIT!! NO!!'' and then when he scored i started screamin' my lungs out.. that game was the shit..
The main thing at that time was the players' psyche. The Czech head coach died due to a car accident only about two weeks before the beginning of the WC. The players were shocked completely and they weren't able to play at all. I really would like to know what they said to each other in the break between the 2nd and 3rd period of the game against Sweden. Because suddenly they played so well what nobody had a chance. If they had come to the final, they would have won. For sure.
You are starting to SOUND like a Swede. Full of Excuses why you didn't win. Czech people on average have much more class, so please stop. Czech hockey players are of the highest skill. On a population basis, Czech's have very high level of talent. Please DO NOT water that down by being a poor sport like Sweden fans.
I'm a fan of both sports, but you're wrong. Soccer is truely the world game and the most exciting when both teams are world class and a big tournament is on.
@x2daz11 I am Czech, am not dirty, I guess I can speak English pretty well. You know, for every little nation it is a special motivation to beat stronger country - in hockey it's Russia and Canada, in football f.e. Germany. It doesn't matter. Every Czech guy who has ever heard the word hockey knows, that Canada is one of the best teams. So is Czech team. I guess respect on both sides is not a bad thing.
Great game - I was happy Canada won, but the Czechs could easily have taken us out and won the tournament. Very equal teams in terms of talent and just a great game.
@CaptainMcDangle Lets see. Every time the tournament takes place in NA mostly in Kanada (you don't see soccer World Cup taking place every time in England ). Teams from other group had travel through the half the globe just to play the semis and a final with no time to recover and adapt to a different time zone. What kind of bush organization is that? Not to mention pocket refs. It is not coincidence that Kanada has never won a medal when best on best took place outside of NA (Japan and Italy).
@highwaystar1009 Exactly, that's pretty much the only tournament that takes place in Europe more often than in NA. And Europe is not one or two countries, no top teams have home ice advantage when it takes place in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria etc etc.
verry nice match. I would like next World Cup. national teams aren't on the World championship full-strength and olympic games are only once every 4 years. best players are not often see on international scene.
:D:D in 93? Czech state was founded in the 9th century. Czech kingdom, Czechoslovakia, Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, Czechoslovakia (again), and in 1993 the independent Czech Republic. quite a rich history isnt it?
I hope Vladimír Růžička will nominate Tomáš Vokoun to the national team for the next World Cup. If yes the ranking teams in the championship will follows: 1st will be Czech republic, 2nd will be Slovakia. Canada will fight for 3rd place against Rusia.
i love how they had to play the goal horn for non-canada goals at the ACC to remain "impartial" as though it was a neutral crowd and setting. who were they kidding
@charliegoodatlax Canada is that awesome young country every other Country wants to be like. Great Game, Great People, and Great Beer................ We've learned from all the old guys; like the Czechs!
Hello from the Greater Toronto area. Can't agree with you more. This was the game of the tourney. And for a while, Roberto Luongo was the difference. The you guys could have easily won that game two or three times in OT. This actualy made the final anti-climactic.
You bet. Go Canada! I hope Canada blows the U.S. away tonight, I'm tired of hearing them talk about how good they are because their A team beat Canada's B team by a single goal in the juniors. Canada's goalie has one bad game and all of a sudden U.S. hockey is blooming. Tonight Canada's gonna set the record straight.
What the awesome game with top-players on both sides. Badluck for CZE coz Roby Luongo he had life form and I think he was a man of the match. It was he who's send Canada to the final, imho. Sry for english, Im Czech and I'm looking forward to next game between them. [>--] Češi !!
@korky94 We weren't part of it, we just had the same Emperor once, Charles IV... And because he was Czech king, he decided Prague would be the capital of HRE... But we were free country at those times... And then we were part of Austrian empire ;) I bet I know history of my country better :) But I'm happy you know about our tiny country :)
o D a n i e l lol, Canada is the only country that really cares about a tiny sport like hockey, Canada should be ashmed they do not win even more since they have more registred players than all other countrys combined.. Still they're not dominating and they're not the most succesful country when it comes to winning golds in tournaments.
goodhitsofthesummer Canada isn't the only country that cares about hockey and there are a lot of really good teams in the world. It's incredibly hard to dominate any major international sport these days. As much as I'd enjoy watching Canada dominate every nation, the competition today is is too good and winning gold is not easy at all. But despite how good the competition has become, Canada still manages to win gold in hockey more often than any other nation, and we're really proud of that. Not arrogant but proud We have a great history of sustained excellence in the sport we are most passionate about. True, we don't win every tournament. If another team beats us, hats off to them. Some day the U.S.A will beat us, but when that happens we won't feel any less pride in ourselves or feel ashamed Not even the U.S.A dominates the sports it care about most. The USA is considered the best baseball nation in the world, but they have not won a medal in any of the World Baseball Classics. Should they be embarrassed about that? No way. Hell, even USA Men's basketball failed to win gold at the Olympics in 2004, so you can surely understand now difficult it is to dominate an international sport repeatedly.
@korky94 HRE on its base was more like catholic/military alliance living on a former fame of Roman empire as the symbolic capital was Rome. Of course nobles were playing each other so easily some Luxemburg could become a king of Bohemia and Emperor of HRE later on. However Prague or Bohemia itself is quite older and joined the alliance as a protection against polish and hungerians from the east and north. That was deep middleage...HRE become a German state federation much later in 15th century.
Canada is best hockey country. number registered players is big. Gretzky, Lemieux, Yzerman, Shanahan, Roy end caries, and replaces Crosby, Lecavalier, Staal, Bergeron, Luongo and more. We should have Ručinsky, Reichel, Straka and more. but ours work with youth players isnt good. and we tooday lag behind Canada, USA, Sweden, Russia. but we realize this problem. I trust we will soon more-competitive.
- This game kinda gets lost in the shuffle because it happened so long ago, it was a semfinal matchup, BUT this definitely was one of the best international games EVER played. :-)
+ckendall67 I think the 2004 World Cup is largely forgotten. To me this was one of the most exciting games Canada ever played in.
@@catguy00 Must agree. Great tournament, great players and amazing game.
Czechs at that time were prolly the best team, tbh, together with the Canadians.
Roberto Luongo was insane at Florida the first time but got 0 press. The fact is this guy should have EASILY won the Vezina in 2004 and 2007. He was by far the best goalie in the world from 2004-2010 in my view.
One of the most underrated hockey games of all time.
Unforgettable, magnificient, memorable, noble,.... match. To lose after such performence isn't dishonour.
What a match! Even after all those years, it's still a classic.
One of the best international hockey games EVER. Period.

nice match, remember watching it at 3 AM or so ;] we probably won't see such consistent and talented czech team in a while ;/
Greatest hockey game I have ever seen
I agree. I was watched that match live. In regural time was 23:35 on shoots for Czechs. What a amazing match!
Remember this on TV too, not just the OT but the entire game was nerve racking.
I remember this game. Canada was completly OWNED by the czechs. They were lucky they won and could then beat Finland in the final, in a much easier game.
I agree. That was the best game of the tournament. Back and forth all game.
lecavailer definitely didnt deserve the penalty he got that gave the czechs the tieing power play goal, but he got his redemtion in the overtime. extremely exciting game of hockey, possibly the best ive ever seen. Jeden z nejkrásnějších zápasů,co jsem kdy viděl....nádhera,škoda že jsme tady Kanadu nedostali...
lecavalier may have faded off in the latter half of his career but he has many accolades and moments like this that deserve a hall of fame induction
absolutely without any doubt the better team lost...
Whatever makes you sleep at night lol

Probably the most exciting hockey game I ever watched.
Probably one of the most underrated Team Canada goals IMO.
That Lecavalier OT goal was insane. Look at the angle and how far he's out on the second shot.

I remember this, what a game. I went nuts for that game winner.
That blast by Kris Draper...
The guys name is Bob Cole. He does all major games on CBC and get you fill of him asap. this season will be his last on Hockey Night In Canada.
Great game but unfortunately we lost this match. I remeber how I was watching it live. It was realy late in Czech but it pays!
best match ever, i remember, how we got back to the match with goal, 6 second after Canada's goal in the 3rd period.
But in OT V. Lacavalier ended this amazing match. I swear, i will definitely remember his name to the end of my life ...
that was just a great game! i remember being so upset but we should be proud =)
It's Bob Cole. And yeah, he's been doing the Stanley Cup Finals for many years now.
Czech team is always a classy skilled team.
@@matejosicka8969 never say never ;) (as of May 26 2024)
@@pcas33 Yeah, we are looking great this year and our U18 and U20 performed well too. Maybe better times are in front of us. 😀❤️
i remember watching this game on tv and thinking how great that lecavelier goal was.
One of my favourite ice hockey games at any level
Wat a game! I totally want to experience the atmosphere of hockey night in Canada once
toto si dobre pamatam..Lemieux legenda a Lecavalierov rozhodujuci gol..fandil som Cechom skoda
Great hockey ! Thats why i consider hockey as a best sport in the planet ! yeah !
still givin me goosebumps.... one of the best plays I ever watched.. from both sides...realy think it supposed to be finals :))
oh boy, that was the greatest game ever!
bob cole makes this game so much more bone chilling
damnn i remember that.. marty brodeur had injured himself!! and luongo replaced him! .. i remember after canada scored, a few seconds after czech republic tied up.. AND the goal by lecavalier.. he missed his first shot i was like ''OH SHIT!! NO!!'' and then when he scored i started screamin' my lungs out..
that game was the shit..
we were the only one who could face the all-star canadian team at their home ground..altough we lost it was a superb game
no! I remember this game. Team Canada got alot of criticism after the game. so they got their act together on the final.
Prehrat Kanadu v plne palbe... Nadherny zapas. Povazuji za nas nejlepsi hokejovy zapas v dejinach.
Naprosto úžasný zápas s pro nás smolným koncem.
Go Canada! What a great game!
I'm a fan of both sports, but you're wrong. Soccer is truely the world game and the most exciting when both teams are world class and a big tournament is on.
Man, the Smyth-Lecavalier-Heatley line is one of my favorite lines ever.
watched the game back then. Just listen to the commentary "luongo is the game saviour for sure today" and that was the case this game.
Very equal teams in terms of talent and just a great game.
i went to this game and was in box seats! it was such a good game! drury goal was a snipe
I remember watching this on TV. The OT was nerve-racking...
i went to this game live it was crazy when leclavie scores
great match with a better end for Canada ,-) but we of the Czech Republic, we were a good opponent :)
Two best teams in the World
@CaptainMcDangle Lets see.
Luongos showing the awsomness he shows now
verry nice match. I would like next World Cup. national teams aren't on the World championship full-strength and olympic games are only once every 4 years. best players are not often see on international scene.
Anybody who doubts Lui can win the big game needs to watch this video, especially his save in OT.
great match
It was fantastic match. I thx for Canadian and Czechs players. But for me...wrong end :(
The best match in the czech history
In Nagano maybe? I am just sad that we can't compete to Canada nowdays
@@radeknaprstek1364 Czech always have good team and classy players
What a shot by Draper.
that was a damn good game..should be best of 3 tho, 1 game isnt enough!!
This is Bob Cole at his finest.
Big Game at the ACC, Don't see much big games at the ACC these days.
@robertw6556 Interesting idea.. but how about September ? Why would it be better ?
I was at this game. I went to all the games in Toronto (package)
@seremuznato velmi smesny prispevek.-D tebe neucili ,ze kdyz se nekde vyseres mel bys to po sobe i splachnout?????
i love how they had to play the goal horn for non-canada goals at the ACC to remain "impartial" as though it was a neutral crowd and setting. who were they kidding
best match ever, despite we lost. well, we need to let Canadians win from time to time, otherwise they're too nervous and angry ;-)
i remember watching this
The best match
@charliegoodatlax Canada is that awesome young country every other Country wants to be like. Great Game, Great People, and Great Beer................ We've learned from all the old guys; like the Czechs!
I remember that goal in overtime :)
Hello from the Greater Toronto area. Can't agree with you more. This was the game of the tourney. And for a while, Roberto Luongo was the difference. The you guys could have easily won that game two or three times in OT. This actualy made the final anti-climactic.
Nah; Canada/US in the 02 Olympics... THAT was the best game of the decade
was this at the acc in toronto?
You bet.
What the awesome game with
top-players on both sides.
And then we were part of Austrian empire ;) I bet I know history of my country better :)
But I'm happy you know about our tiny country :)
i love matches czech vs canada, small czech nation can play good hockey!
I agree the better team lost and I am beginning to hate the canadiens
o D a n i e l lol, Canada is the only country that really cares about a tiny sport like hockey, Canada should be ashmed they do not win even more since they have more registred players than all other countrys combined..
Some day the U.S.A will beat us, but when that happens we won't feel any less pride in ourselves or feel ashamed
Not even the U.S.A dominates the sports it care about most.
Damn... good game.
@charliegoodatlax
Prague was a big city for the Holy Roman Empire, if i remember correctly
nice match.
proc to tehdy slo? podobnej tym ve vancouveru pohorel
@korky94
HRE on its base was more like catholic/military alliance living on a former fame of Roman empire as the symbolic capital was Rome.
Finsko těžko...chtěl si napsat snad švédsko ne?
