We're developing all sorts of anti-aging treatments that haven't seen use outside of mice or cultured stem cells, so it's pretty silly for this article to claim that we could be nearing our limit now. The only "treatments" in widespread use are diet, exercise, and a greater emphasis on mental health. But there are tons of mRNA-based treatments on the horizon to lengthen telomeres to prevent DNA damage (hTERT mRNA), to "mark" cancer cells and allow our immune systems to target them more effectively (Cancer Vaccine Launchpad in the UK), to stimulate the production of collagen in our skin, and so on. Granted this stuff will be expensive and limited to trials for a good while, but it's way too early to say we're nearing our limit.
Do you see the flaw in this study Josh? It’s basing life expectancy on the advancement on modern medicine only. What do we as Americans suffer from more than any other country? Obesity. Which leads to diabetes and heart disease. Obesity, along with alcohol consumption, smoking, and illegal drug use are called modifiable risk factors. That means we have control over what we put in our bodies. I don’t know how many times I saw patients that abused their bodies for 20 or 30 years and then come into the hospital expecting modern medicine to make them whole again. It doesn’t work that way and it never will. Longevity and quality of life go hand in hand. Modern medicine is just part of the equation. The other part being our life choices. But therein lies the problem. No one wants to take responsibility for their health. It’s far easier to say they have no control over their health as they indulge in all manner of gluttony and excess.
It all depends on quality of life anyways. I don’t want to be 120 if my last 40 of those years are immobile and in pain. I guess this is good for social security that people are not living longer. “Come on, you apes! You want to live forever?”
Starship Troopers. On Babylon 5 it was, ""Well, who wants to live forever?" "I do, actually. But what the hell. Signal away." (Then he pushed the button that gave away their position.)
I'm struggling w/ the math on this. I understand that men have the more dangerous jobs but those kinds of deaths would factor into averages (don't you always warn us to be careful about averages), no? That still wouldn't seem to address that women tend to just live longer.
Hoping to live til I die, because any sooner seems like a bummer
LOL
Wages of sin is death then the judgement. Death comes for us all

Well aren’t you an ape already?

Because you’ll die earlier?
Exactly
