I also think way of Shadows Monk needs a facelift. If a monk-rogue multiclass makes for a 10x better ninja, why did they make the subclass. The biggest gripe is that the flavor of the class doesn’t feel like it fully kicks in until the second or third ability (at levels people rarely reach).
Ran a Bards as spies RP guild in ESO for years, was good times except when you ran into people who couldn't seem to fathom the concept that bards don't need to be exclusively horny comic relief characters. Honestly a very thorough and detailed breakthrough of all the issues with the wizard class. Kudos to you mister Hat for such an amazing rework to this core class, can't wait to try it out. If I may give one point of critique though, I feel this might step on the toes of the Bard College of Whispers subclass.
Initially I played my Littlefinger (*but gay*) inspired bard as a whispers bard, but ended up remaking him as an eloquence bard + soul knife rogue and it's such a better combo. He still can deal psychic damage and can come off as unnervingly charming, which for me is what a basically Littlefinger character needs to be able to do.
Purple Dragon Knight/Banneret Fighter is a subclass I'd like to see reworked. Flavor wise they are cool, I always wanted to play a non-caster martial with Charisma sprinkled in
Oh this series looks fun. Thank you for the improved college of lies. Maybe later down the line, you'll play with the rogue's inquisitive and mastermind subclasses? Those are other subclasses that have fantastic flavor but are considered weak.
Also, something you could potentially explore. I've wondered what it would be like if you could multi-subclass, take on two subclasses on one character. For instance, for a rogue, you could do an arcane trickster-swashbuckler. Or a fighter could be both a tactician and a champion, which honestly would make the best Captain America build.
Man, I rocked a Whisper Bard Undead warlock for a spy campaign, and let me tell you the utility combination with horror elements had it become my favorite character I’ve ever built. Stage name Bart B Bardimus of course
One of my favorite 5e characters was a Hexblade/Whisperbard multiclass. Made for a nice, well-balanced, suitably emo character. But also it was an AL character that I used while traveling around the country so "does not play well with others" and "not here to make friends" was kind of part of the schtick.
I played a college of whispers bard and made him absolutely terrifying in one campaign I was in. I played a half-elf for the extra ability score improvements and skills. I took the sharpshooter feat which allowed me to add 10 damage to my ranged attacks at a -5 penalty to the roll and ignore 3/4 cover. Keep in mind that the college of whispers bard has a subclass feature called psychic blades which scales like a rogues sneak attack adding additional damage on a hit that scales with level and uses your bardic inspiration. Now I had multiple sources of additional damage from this that I could deal in one large burst. I didn't stop there I took levels in rogue for cunning action and sneak attack adding even more damage and allowing me to hide, dash or disengage as a bonus action. Keep in mind I used bard as my primary class allowing me to use aoe spells like faerie fire so me and the party would always have advantage. I also took crossbow expert. So I could attack twice adding 10 damage to each attack plus sneak attack and psychic damage all in one turn. If you wanna take elven accuracy you get extra advantage. You can also level dip in fighter for action surge and have someone cast haste on you. The damage you can do is completely insane.
I’ve actually been playing a whisper bard in an ongoing Waterdeep campaign (from Dragon Heist to Mad Mage) and while it can be a bit difficult to use, I love using it because I have to get creative with it. This group of enemies are from the next dungeon level we don’t know about: steal their shadow and get a better idea about what’s on the next level. Someone is about to do something stupid and is being too stubborn: magically blackmail them into not doing that exceptionally stupid thing.
Lord Pointy Hat, i'm a fan of yours, and would like to show you my own take on the bard class: Performancer: A magician who uses their own imagination as their source of magic, casting spells through their art. They channel magic through the harmony within their performances, projecting it at the pinnacle of their flow, transforming any scenario in their stage.

Pointyhat: College of whispers bard is the only subclass with selfish inspiration. College of swords: Excuse me WHAT! (Context: Their bardic inspiration choices act similar to that one fighter ability that has its own feat, martial versatility. sure, some of the options give debuffs, but still.)
I also find it interesting that the lore is meant to give an idea that they attempt to imitate other bard subclasses around other bards and yet none of their abilities even moderately give that vibe
@pointyhatstudios You need to make a correction on the 14th Level: Liarbird feature. Currently it says "This insight check is not made at disadvantage as per your “Razor Tongue” ability." You need to remove the word "not".
I think this is a pretty neat series, and one I would definitely enjoy seeing more of! Also, I like the art style you use for the videos with those cute character designs.
A few years ago i remember making a Phantom Thief subclass for the bard because of my dissatisfaction with whisper's bard, I should definitely come back to fix it and bring it to the Tasha standard, but but yours really comes close to hitting the spot!
As a french, I wanted to compliment you on your perfect french accent (because i suppose you're british or australian or from new zealand) it's really impressive. About the video... very cool video, will definitely use the subclass, thanks for your content !
14:00 not necessarily, think of it like this, if you are with another character that can assume a different identity than their own, or one that can use illusions and something like telepathy, even if they don't have your ability to substract information, you can find ways to convey your information to them like using telepathy like i just said or thieves cant in front of someone who doesnt speak it, similarly and i think this is the most telling idea, you can be someone else's warrantor, just say while wearing someone's face and using their memories or while charming someone "yeah he is with me, yes this guy who has nothing to do with the party that we are tracking because he is totally not wearing a disguise is just some rando i hired to help us with excavating the ruins, nothing to see here", basically I think they are really a support class meant to help a small group of infiltrators have an aliby without having to do deep and lengthy reconnaissance in advance. Just go in with the party members that can disguise themselves convincingly to fortify their alliby/disguise and exfil once you have what you want, then you can go back in force or just yeet discreetely.
Its important to know, that expanding your bardic dice to do that damage is a free action, meaning you can choose to apply it after you see a crit in the same way people do with Smite.
You are my favourite youtuber. Not only from dnd-youtube community but from all youtube. I find all your videos very interesting and u give me a bunch of inspirational energy to roleplay and worldbuild. I would LOVE see your approach on the concept of mixin Hags and Dragons (maybe some dragons united in a coven?)
My friend noticed that your Liarbird ability is almost entirely useless. It can only be used with damaging + side effect spells and there aren't many of those on the Bard spell list. I don't think a feature should require a feat to be useful, especially not if it's a capstone ability. Liarbird is also combat-only since it deals pseudo-damage to a target. That'd end in combat 99% of DMs. We really like the flavour and feel of the ability though, so I came up with an alternate version. Feel free to use it for a revision if you want to. Level 14: Liarbird [...] As an action, select a spell you know that has a single target and a creature that can hear you and could be affected by the stipulations outlined in the chosen spell. [...] the creature takes no damage, but believes itself to have taken damage, if the spell you chose would have dealt damage. This means Liarbird can be used with non-damaging spells which allows fake charms and stuff like it. The "hearing" stipulation means that spells like Sending cannot be imitated (which I think is good since that's not the aim of the ability). The ability can be silenced, but at Level 14 you should have a counter prepared anyway. I think this Liarbird is a lot more practical for a roleplay focused subclass because of these reasons
I won't lie, I was looking around to see if anyone would bring up a possible counter for the Liarbird as I had a similar reaction of bafflement with how useless it is. I could have seen it working more like phantasmal force where maybe they took psychic damage or disadvantage or something, anything. Instead it leaves it up to the player to seek out a spell that has a secondary effect(which as you said, there aren't many). I like your rewording for the feat instead and worked on in a bit more from where you took it(hopefully this isn't rude). In the chance you may be curious, or Antonio decides he would like to use the ideas... "Your masterful control of lies and deceit allows you to trick your foes into believing they are under the effect of a spell they are not truly experiencing. As an action, select a spell you know that targets a single creature that can hear you and could be affected by the stipulations outlined in the chosen spell. The creature must make a Wisdom (Insight) check contested against your Charisma (Deception) check. This Insight check is not made at disadvantage due to your “Razor Tongue” ability. On a failure, the creature believes itself to be afflicted by the spell and suffers its effects. The creature takes no damage, instead believing itself to have taken or to be currently taking damage. As a result, the target suffers disadvantage on its next attack roll or saving throw. For spells with ongoing effects, the creature must make a Wisdom (Insight) check contested against your Charisma (Deception) check at the end of each of its turns to end the effect. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest. You can also use this ability by expending a spell slot of the appropriate level for the chosen spell." I must thank you multiple times for speaking up and sharing the ideas you can your friend came up with. I hope you have a wonderful day!
@OceanStateMadness Thanks for the kind words! The main change you made is the reroll for ongoing effects, right? I honestly would've considered that as part of the way jt already works (if the chosen spell had a save that would normally be rerolled). So maybe a version like "If the effect of the chosen spell allows the target to roll a Saving Throw to end the effect, they can." On another note I've just thought something like "This feature cannot be used to cast the spell at a higher level." might be nice. It never explicitly allowed it anyway, but this way there won't be players insisting on a Level 9 Geas for free 🙃
Interesting approach. I took a different route with mine, balancing the other features for combat as you noted. For 3rd level I swapped which feature used the Bardic Inspiration. So Psychic Blades is now more like the Rogues Sneak Attack but the target needs to be under the effect of... Words of Terror, which stays the same for its free, one minute use out of combat but can also be used as a Bonus Action if a Bardic Inspiration is expended. This is the party help buff as Frightened will help everyone. Mantle of Whispers again stays relatively the same but the hour long use only requires the creature to be incapacitated/unconscious. If you kill the creature, you can permanently take their shadow and have a number of them saved equal to your CHA bonus (dismiss any as no action) The combat use is you can dismiss one shadow permanently to target a creature and force a WIS save. Failing will make them believe you are a close loved one under enchantment and have disadvantage on attacks against you for 1 minute.
You have such an amazing knack for creativity and its super inspiring. I’d love to see you come up with more. Namely. I’d love to see you make a sorceror subclass for that Heirarch Lich. Like. What is it like to be a PC who is “part of the family”
I hope WTIIDKIIBASYWSSIYLI becomes a series, of all the new ideas pointy hat comes up with, mostly because I want to see the character arc of him saying the acronym more and more elegantly until it’s done so well you hardly bat an eye at its length.
Hello I am Antonio Domico and what I do is take a thing, any kind of thing, it can be a class, race, subject, person or place just so long as it's some....'thing' and I explain why it was bad...or somewhat good...when it came out and then I cut it into little pieces like a puzzle, add some cool things that SHOULDVE been there all along, throw out the garbage that needs to go, an reassemble into a brand new "thing" that's the same....only way better!! And all for %100 pointy hat guarantee free! For all to use! Lol I love your channel, you do great work! Especially the way you come up with Stat sheets and playable scenarios, so cool!
Shug, you don't have to explain anything to us. We're happy to watch and learn! I'm playing a Rogue Soulknife/Whisper bard for the first time (for both classes) and I kinda like them. 😊
Thank you and totally agree on the need for this revision! In the original Whispers Bard, the only combat ability that lets you deal extra psychic damage doesn't come with any supporting features (weapon or armor proficiencies, weapon as spellcasting focus, extra attack, etc) that would encourage you to use a weapon in combat as a full spellcaster. And the roleplay-centric features are, to my mind, overdetermined. You have to roleplay telling someone their darkest secret in a one-on-one convo to use your 14th level ability? Surely there's a more flexible alternative. I really like your College of Lies options, especially Razor Tongue and Archbewitcher. Liarbird is cool, but it requires a lot of in-depth knowledge of spells and their effects to use imho. The next video in this "Fixer Upper" series could be the Purple Dragon Knight!
Playing around with subclasses is neat! And turning college of whispers into more manipulation and subterfuge instead of infiltration/assassination is such a fun idea
i actually built a whisper bard/swashbuckler rogue multiclass just a few weeks ago (which was my first time trying to design something myself after trying out builds i'd found online or playing a bunch of optimized builds on bg3) and it feels like i did a good job making something both fun and hard hitting. so seeing a video on the subclass i built the whole thing around makes me really happy
love this concept. Always thought the whole "guy who whispers poison in the kings ear" type of character hasnt been explored enough and this would be a good way to use it.

As a french, I wanted to compliment you on your perfect french accent (because i suppose you're british or australian or from new zealand) it's really impressive. About the video... very cool video, will definitely use the subclass, thanks for your content !
Whisper Bard: Charismatic spies that use infiltration and espionage to take their targets down in plain sight
Pointy Hats POV: Asmr
seeing as I've watched literally all your videos, seeing a new upload is amazing
0:58 store bought *is* just fine, so long as we're talking miniatures and hormones, thank you very much.

Hold on a damn minute
Its important to know, that expanding your bardic dice to do that damage is a free action, meaning you can choose to apply it after you see a crit in the same way people do with Smite.
Title and thumbnail is wizards, video is about bards...
Yes please! Definitely keep this series.
The problem with wizards... they aren't bards?
You are my favourite youtuber. Not only from dnd-youtube community but from all youtube. I find all your videos very interesting and u give me a bunch of inspirational energy to roleplay and worldbuild. I would LOVE see your approach on the concept of mixin Hags and Dragons (maybe some dragons united in a coven?)
I am so confused
I think it’s a joke on Whisper’s whole thing of pretending to be something else.
Level 14: Liarbird
[...]
As an action, select a spell you know that has a single target and a creature that can hear you and could be affected by the stipulations outlined in the chosen spell.
[...]
the creature takes no damage, but believes itself to have taken damage, if the spell you chose would have dealt damage.
You can also use this ability by expending a spell slot of the appropriate level for the chosen spell."
I must thank you multiple times for speaking up and sharing the ideas you can your friend came up with. I hope you have a wonderful day!
@OceanStateMadness Thanks for the kind words! The main change you made is the reroll for ongoing effects, right? I honestly would've considered that as part of the way jt already works (if the chosen spell had a save that would normally be rerolled). So maybe a version like "If the effect of the chosen spell allows the target to roll a Saving Throw to end the effect, they can."
On another note I've just thought something like "This feature cannot be used to cast the spell at a higher level." might be nice. It never explicitly allowed it anyway, but this way there won't be players insisting on a Level 9 Geas for free 🙃
Bro clickbaited me
Interesting approach.
Is wizards an Instrument?
You have such an amazing knack for creativity and its super inspiring. I’d love to see you come up with more. Namely. I’d love to see you make a sorceror subclass for that Heirarch Lich. Like. What is it like to be a PC who is “part of the family”
Random thing to say but I think your voice is perfect for a nerd live tv show host
I hope WTIIDKIIBASYWSSIYLI becomes a series, of all the new ideas pointy hat comes up with, mostly because I want to see the character arc of him saying the acronym more and more elegantly until it’s done so well you hardly bat an eye at its length.
is this video purposely in disguise
Thoroughly enjoyable as usual but roughly 37.4% funnier and more useful. New & Improved Pointy Hat!
Potential title:
DnD R-R-Remix
did dude just made a whole series build on Undying--->Undead warlock principal? I love it!
This was fun! And J really like the notion of doing a continued series of reworked subclasses!
This is super cool! I was a little sad not to see a fully illustrated version of the subclass at the end, but I know you have a lot to do
Shug, you don't have to explain anything to us. We're happy to watch and learn! I'm playing a Rogue Soulknife/Whisper bard for the first time (for both classes) and I kinda like them. 😊
I've been keeping this wizard vid notif all day so I can make sure to watch it, sure hope it wasn't a mistype : )
The tenth bard in the survey is just a whispers bard in disguise
i actually built a whisper bard/swashbuckler rogue multiclass just a few weeks ago (which was my first time trying to design something myself after trying out builds i'd found online or playing a bunch of optimized builds on bg3) and it feels like i did a good job making something both fun and hard hitting. so seeing a video on the subclass i built the whole thing around makes me really happy
This was such a fun video! I hope this becomes a series in the future cause I really love it!
Love the new subclass, it was super interesting and sounds like a lot of fun. I think you did a great job keeping the flavor but upping the utility.
love this concept. Always thought the whole "guy who whispers poison in the kings ear" type of character hasnt been explored enough and this would be a good way to use it.
I love to watch your videos. I love to listen to them for inspiration, and are just a lot of fun to watch
already love the series and I always love your content
I absolutely love these new and inventive takes on everything dnd
PLEASE MAKE MORE 🙏🙏🙏
I'm not entirely sure I understand how this is not just D&D with a Twist, but still, keep up the good work!
clicking on a notification just to see the title of the video change in front of my eyes. all part of the pointy hat experience
You can deep dive on anything ever and we will eat it up. Keep going
