  • I knew going into this job these two large stumps inside of these planter beds were going to be a fight, didn't know what kind of growth was underneath all that dirt, turned out to be quite a lot! Had to get a little creative to grind out the highest points on the stump before working my way down into the root ball below. Happy with how it turned out, so was the client.
He likes to work on projects around his property himself, but we will be back to this property soon to assist with the heavy lifting and disposal of the two main piles created from the grinding.

Also have you tried single wheels instead of dual wheels for the stump grinder?

Most of the time I run it with dual wheels for stump grinding, I have only run it without them once for a job with a small fence opening. I like how it gives you a nice stable platform to work with on the dual wheel setup so the machine can basically just float over the hole created by grinding out the stump without any issues.
It works fine with the dual wheels off, but would probably struggle a bit on the bigger stumps like these ones for stability without them on.

Would have it been better to chainsaw the first4 or 5” of the stump before starting? That would also lesson the angle for the height. Just wondering. How do you know if there is steel in the stump. And if so do you charge more or refuse to do it?

For this particular one, the material under the dirt was the hardest. For future projects, we will also be implementing a new mesh tarp setup around our stump grinding jobs to mitigate the amount of material flying around, still working on the process for that!
I have not come across any steel in a stump yet, we would cross that bridge when we come to it!

Do you charge more for hardwood stumps? That looked like a maple

For me it more so depends on the size of the stump. If they are small ones, ill do it priced by the inch. If it is a bigger stump, ill price it based on how long I think it will take.
