You've put your finger right on it, Suzanne. I've been immersed in contemporary music for the last 64 years and watched with dismay as the quality and originality has gradually deteriorated and we're now left with a desert of mediocrity (with the very occasional small oasis, if you know where to look.) I was lucky enough to see Simon and Garfunkel in concert at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester (UK) in April 1968 and their performance was sheer unmitigated magic. I know it's an old cliche, but we'll never see their like again. Luckily, we can still enjoy the albums - both as a duo and Paul's solo work - and I never tire of listening to them all these years later.
What, you don't like repetitive and meaningless phrases, peppered with the word "b*tch," strung out over a pounding rhytmn from an electronic drum set? Good, neither do I. Let's be friends.

I remember 1968, staying up late into the night learning to play this on my little Sears guitar for the Jr. High school talent show. Now 53 years later I'll play along the best my old fingers can, and savor those memories with a cup of pre-dawn tea. My all time favorite of yours. It's rhythmic beauty is timeless. Thank you.

I think Paul's early songs were in many ways his best, the haunting incisiveness of the lyrics, the sincerity of his singing and the atmospheric acoustic guitar work. As most people know, this song was inspired by his English girlfriend of his time spent touring England in the mid-60's and is one of my favourite Paul Simon songs. Sadly, Kathy Chitty passed away a few years ago but she is immortalised in this beautiful and moving example of Paul's incomparable genius.
I wish I could tell Paul how much his music has made my life better. Tried to send him fan mail. It was returned. I wish I could send him some bottled happiness. He deserves it. He has made the world a better place through his music. Thanks.
YES. My life has been affected by this man's music. Since I was 8 or 9, and he was a big fan of my father! The first song on the first Simon & Garfunkle album ( Wed Morning) is one of my Dad's songs. And yes, my Dad's music has been part of my life. But nowhere as much as Paul Simon. I would love to talk to him. His songs are so intimate, or deep, or vulnerable, or prayerful, or playful. He has been a great friend to me through his music. No one is more diverse! Joan Armatrading comes close.... Love you Paul! For so many years. And through lots tears. Shalom & Namaste
I understand your feelings completely and have at times in my younger years felt the same longing to tell him. But then I thought of how deep his music is…how he is an INFP and 4 w 5…and realized, he already knows. He knows more than we could ever tell him with our words, what his music means to us. We can rest easy knowing he understands before we speak, all we wish we could express to him.
No love song, absolutely NO love song moves my heart as much as this one! ... The melody, the feeling in the voice, the guitar which sounds like rain drops and the lyrics are simply magical! ... "So, you see I have come to doubt, all that I once held as true. I stand alone without believes, the only truth I know is you." Those particular words I think are my favourite lyrics ever written... THe first time I heard this precious song was in Stockholm 2004, when I heard it live. That song really helped me, since I was going through a lot of emotional healing at the time. Thank you, Paul Simon for a musical pearl!! Warmth from Nenne in Sweden
I couldn't agree more, Jerome - I've been saying the same thing for half a century! Have you noticed the common thread - all North American, all Jewish, all of quite restricted height and all bearing surnames comprising five letters!
@@ianthomas5955- Of course, Dylan's real name is Zimmerman but no matter. I never knew Paul Simon was Jewish but that is no matter, either. I love all three of them.

This song is a masterpiece, one of my favourites by Paul! Can give you hope with its love and incredibly strong sense of affection or tear you apart with its sadness and longing. Approach with caution if you're missing someone! :..)
i grew up in the 50s and 60s. i learned paul simons finger picking first on a six string and then on a 12. i still have my old yamaha 12 string , but haven't played in 30 years. i kept it , hoping i could play again , but my hands are so brittle now from work and tendon problems that i can't even form chords. this is one of paul simon's songs that everyone loved . it brings back memories of those times. that and " april" , and "poem on the underground wall". to me , paul simon was the absolute best song writer . his style of guitar playing was unmatched by anyone.

I have been happily married for over 25 years ....and still crazy after all these years, just not as crazy as I used to be!!

If I really could say "I have a favourite song", this would be the one I would pick. After "Sound of Silence". Which would be my second pick after "Bridge over troubled water". Oh, who cares? They are all brilliant.
This is just about the most perfect love song ever! I remember hearing it way back in 67 or 68 but not really focusing on it till now all these years later. I was too young to appreciate it though I loved their album Bookends especially the song America which is also about a girl named Kathy. It was my favorite S&G tune until this one.
True genius is not found in so many words but in the careful selection of just a few that say so much. Brilliant writing here Paul. Placing your love in the same spot as God himself.

My thoughts are many miles away
They lie with you in your sleep
And kiss you when you start your day
And this song I was writing is left undone
I don't know why I spend my time
Writing songs I can't believe
With words that tear and strain to rhyme
And so you see I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true
I stand alone without beliefs

Weave their weary paths and die
