@NoNo47668 too dark or just too... weird. There's an episode where this one girl has multiple layers of skin that are younger versions of the girl underneath. Said girl is a model (I think) and when her mom learns about it, she literally peels her daughter while she's sleeping. That's the type of weird that I'm talking about.
Does this apply to this series alone or his work in general. I have some of the Junji Ito animes on my watchlist since I'm interested in watching more horror, so just curious
@AnnieRae1885 Well the show is a collection of different pieces that he's done, including the more famous ones like Tomie and Uzumaki. It would depend on which stories in particular you had saved because, as I said earlier, there's quite a few stories of his that are darker than others, especially to certain audiences, and if it isn't dark then it's weird in a sense that a basic item or concept has become a horror.

The Hanging Balloons: It's a not-so-subtle social commentary on mental health and suicide in Japan. If the action of the people seem dumb/ridiculous, it is because that is how people usually sees suicide. People often struggle to make sense of why people commit suicide (case in point: Chester of Linkin Park, Robin Williams, Jeffrey Epstein j/k) The way the balloon chases people down and kills them is symbolism that suicidal thoughts/depression is deadly. As suicides are made public (reporter), the idea of suicide spreads all over the city. The dad goes to work even though he clearly needs a break, kills himaelf. The son feeling that he is the head of the house, goes out the same way. The mom unable to bear the pain, kills herself. The daughter locks herself in her room and is lured by the thought of joining her brother, also kills herself. - @ktefccre
For anyone who doesn't understand, the entire story of "the hanging balloons" is a metaphor for how depression and suicide can spread in a society when things get bad. The anime adaptation completely dropped the ball and misunderstood and took it literally. Each balloon is connected to a person and if you pop one, that person dies anyways.
