In a previous video, there was a suggested squirt mixture of Garlon 3A, water, and Arsenal AC. The two chemicals are quite expensive. Are there alternatives with less cost?
Yeah use a 60% solution of 41% active ingredient Glyphosate. Make sure you do your application during the growing season when using Glyphosate and likewise you will want to do quite a few more hacks per inch DBH. Do 1 hack every half inch or inch of DBH completely around the circumference of the tree.
Or you can girdle the tree without herbicide to top kill it. Knowing every species you girdle will resprout/sucker you should plan to use fire to keep them setback. Thats one way to do it super low cost, but girdling is slower and follow up is much more critical. Make sure you don't hack n squirt or girdle any trees within 100 ft or so of your fire break.
They are relatively expensive, but with the amount of herbicide needed to kill even larger trees equates to pennies when extrapolated. a 2.5 gallon jug of arsenal and garlon could essentially last most landowners a lifetime. Maybe see if you have any buddies that are interested in management that would split the cost with you. Short answer is no, there is no other single herbicide or mixture that is as effective.
