From how you're phrasing it, sounds like the only thing that's holding the dub to such a high position is nostalgia, which says nothing about whether the dub is good or not.
Implications/reasons for each change: 1. 4kids wasn't allowed to show the cards as they were in real life otherwise the show would have been listed as an ad rather than a real TV show. 2. The book Kaiba is reading is called "Thus spoke Zarathustra" a popular book written by Frederick Niche which proposes the ideal that success comes from struggle, that greatness only means something if you prove yourself and obtain it without aid. This is important because it's basically Seto Kaibas mindset in a nutshell and every decision he makes is informed by this ideology. However this book is also known, and probably most well known, because of the now infamous statement that God is dead. It's likely that the book title was removed due to the controversial topics that it covers. 3. This is, at least in my opinion, one of the few changes that actually improves the scene a bit. Jonouchi just wanted to buy some cards and didn't seem to have any interest in the Blue Eyes White Dragon. Joey on the other hand wanted to trade specifically for the Blue Eyes, making Grandpa's reaction make more sense. 4. No real reason for this one, especially since the text wasn't even in Japanese. 5. Same as before, no reason at all for this change. 6. My best guess for this one is they specifically wanted to remove "darkness" from the name. Not sure why considering Yugi will later summon the Dark Magician in this very duel. 7&8. The next two share the same reasoning. The Exodia cards originally had each piece in front of what's supposed to be a pentagram, this was removed for obvious reasons. 9. This is one of my favorites because of how silly it is. You can see in the original that Yugi holds the right arm and both legs of Exodia and during this turn he draws the left arm, this is important because on Yugi's next turn he will draw the fifth and final piece. But 4kids in all their glorious wisdom decided to change the right arm to the left arm but Yugi still draws the left arm during his draw phase. This means he now has TWO left arms in his hand 😅😅😅 yet still summons Exodia on the next turn without drawing the right arm at all. Great job 4kids! 👍. 10. Just like with 7&8, Exodia was originally summoned through a pentagram, the seal was changed for the same obvious reasons.
The cards look different coz in the sub they're filled with Japanese writing, and foreign kids can't read Japanese. So if they wanted to sell Yu-Gi-Oh cards and broadcast the show outside Japan, they had to be written in English.
"Kami no shindeiru, watashi wa ikenie ni sasageru!“ (Don't know if I got that right, but it should kind of translate into "God is dead, I sacrificed him!“)
Yugi’s, Atem’s, and Joey’s voices were so different from I had pictured like, I had to completely shut down my phone to grasp how different and how difficult it was to hear in the Japanese/original/subbed version. I’m not saying that it was bad, but it was bad. Yugi’s voice sounded so off compared to the English/dubbed version, also with Atem/Yami Yugi, i was expecting Atem’s voice to be much deeper than what it was it was so not helping Yugi’s voice at all if it was even trying. And Joeys, omg.. I prefer him with the accent, it took me on a whole spin from how empty he sounded. 😭😭😭
is it just me that doesn't see the quality, style, and appeal in the "sub"? everything sounds like it recorded in a backyard, the sound effects and music are obnoxious to say the least, and it's just mindless talking i don't like the censorship, but aside from that, it was taken to new levels when it was Americanized, like everything else in history really
