Great video! My mother-in-law came from Andong and we've visited the Tahoe Village twice. Wonderful place. I love everything about hanoks, from the ondol and mulberry paper walls to the patterns of stonework in many houses and the ways they are perfectly adapted to the winter cold and summer humidity in the peninsula. My mother-in-law used to live in a hanok in the center of Andong but she left in the early 1960s for the US and, when we went back with her first in 1999, she couldn't recognize the city as it appeared from the train station, as it is now a mass of highrises. Her aunt did help us find the house, tucked down a back street, and what had been a prosperous merchant's dwelling around a courtyard (her father was the #2 mackerel importer in Andong) was now a slum divided up into apartments. That house was itself a rebuild of the original hanok that was destroyed in the Korean War. They had been hiding in the mountains and she went back with her father to see the damage after the US bombed the bridges to stop the NK advance, which was a traumatic experience that never left her.
Thank you! And thanks for sharing some of your family’s history, very interesting indeed. Having enjoyed a few trips to both Andong and Hahoe, it’s hard to imagine the devastation brought about by the Korean War. And yes, modern Korean cities have changed so much from the days when hanoks were the common style of house. Interesting also to know the mackerel connection… we’ve had many a tasty mackerel dish there. Thanks again 🙂
haeryang kim Thank you! Korea is so beautiful, our home for 3 years and we miss it every day! I think often we don’t appreciate the beauty of our own country until we travel somewhere else or see it through someone else’s eyes. Thanks for watching! Hope you’re enjoying life in the UK.
That riverside is the filming location of Netflix KINGDOM. It's the river where the ship's zombie was burning. I don't know if you look at it roughly, but if you look closely,South Korea has something similar to Scotland. Thank you for your wonderful life video.
Oh cool, we didn't know that! We started watching Kingdom but didn't see more than the first episode or two. The scenery at Hahoe is just gorgeous. Interesting that you find similarities with Scotland, I find them so different! Thanks for watching and appreciating : ) Kim
@@GoingTheWholeHogg Of course, Scotland and Korea are different, but we can find similarities in history. I saw the situation in Northern Ireland yesterday on the news. So I looked up history about England. Scotland and Northern Ireland belong to uk, but I know that there is an independent culture and ideology that foreigners other than England do not know. It was a pity that only a large amount of fabricated information, adapted and disparaged by Japan, was known abroad.Historically, they have their own culture, but Scotland and Korea are similar in that they have been hidden by other forces. Thank you for leaving comments.
@@lightsky5430 Ah yes, I understand what you mean now. Not about the landscapes being similar, but similarities when it comes to history and each country's relationship with their neighbour. It's true!
Nice!! Hahoe village was pretty beautiful! Specially now at the end of summer! Hope you enjoyed the Mask performance! Do you know Playground brewery (craft beer) using the masks on their labels design? ;)
Lifetime Travelmates We love it there ❤️ No! Haven’t heard of them but bet I’d love the design. We’ve got a couple of Korean masks already added to our collection!
