Ubiquiti really changed the game on Wireless access points 3 or 4 years ago when they started selling them for close to EUR 100 rather than EUR 300. The UAP-AC-LR has been awesome in my house with three floors. The powering via POE makes it so much easier to situate the unit in an optimal location. And I gifted one to my sister for her even more challenging house. I am a fan for sure.
Yes a single UAP-AC-LR Unit mounted quite high on a ground floor wall near central stairwell. Internal walls are not particularly dense. Each situation can be different, many variables. The POE means only a single cable needed to be run - which makes it easier to get an optimal location.
Yup, I have two in my bungalow house (1 floor plus a basement), one per each side and it's roughly 1500 sq ft. The idea is they both will certainly overlap in the middle of the house, but on the first AP on one side I can get my driveway covered and the other AP can cover my large backyard. Both have been awesome especially for the price. Can't recommend them enough!
Thanks for proving a point I previously made to someone: The in-wall isn't that much worse, but is more convenient with the added switchports. It's a great device behind a TV table: run one ethernet cable, got wifi and 4 (!) wired ports. BOOM.
I frequently use the in wall AP in school class rooms when there is only one network run. I can power a PoE phone, connect the computer, and the printer plus have 5Ghz wifi in a room with usually concrete block walls. Works well in my experience.
Moving the laptop even an inch can make a big difference as well. You get what are know as standing waves from reflections that create destructive interference. And at 2 to 5 ghz the waves are very small. Likewise moving the objects, including your body, changes the reflections which changes the interference. The classic analogy is if you toss a single small stone into a calm lake you will see perfect waves radiating out in concentric circles. But if you toss two stones the waves from each collide and the wave patterns are a complex mess.
Great to see these tests - I looked at the official antenna field shapes from Ubiquity and from there it actually seemed like the HD models has vastly superior antennas even compared to the LR model - I bought an LR model simply because it suits my budget - so glad to see that paying more for an HD AP would not have solved my range problems
Over many deployments, the AC-Pro has always been the most consistent across sites that we manage and monitor. We have had the most issues with the NanoHD. These are just general results of many office sites that have 6 to 20 WAP deployed in various density configurations to meet customer needs.
If you want to properly test a ceiling mount antenna, put it on the ceiling when testing. This is how the antenna was designed, on the ceiling facing the ground. It was not designed to be put on a table and facing the ceiling. Your basically testing it upside down and in the middle of the air instead of on the ceiling. The range will not reflect a real world simulation ;)
I actually ran into the 5GHz being 'too bad'. Have the AC PRO model, but I need to force devices to 2.4GHz. It appears you cannot force devices to be on 2.4GHz band, only by splitting SSID and then disabling 5GHz on the AP works. Most likely I will either end up with more APs or even use a PowerLine setup for the devices that are borderline. It surprised me a little I had to go that route. It seems the newer AI on the software does a great job unless your device cannot get enough signal for 5GHz. Appreciate all the time taken to put the research together, it sure if time consuming :)
I am so happy to see you did such an extensive test. I've been on the fence with the new U6-LR-US (the new long-range model) but I have a few of the UAP-AC-LR on-site and was curious to how they faired against the UAP-AC-PRO. I didn't know how much further the LR goes but now I know!
You should really expand on the technical differences in your testing. What was the power output for the 2g radio? The LR, HD and AC-Pro models have the exact same antenna gain. The nano is 0.2dBi less. The technical information which can be found in the datasheets can offer much more detailed information about the differences in each of these models.
I am not sure exactly how the software he uses generates traffic, i.e. is it performing tx at the same time as Rx? Is his laptop radio 1x1? This would explain the slow speeds. This is the speed I get to the AC-LITE with a 40mhz 5Ghz channel, using my phone (2x2) and speedtest.net which of course tests tx from the AP then Rx, not simultaneously. (230tx/200rx Mbps average ) www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/5932624086 With 5Ghz set to 80Mhz I was able to achieve a highest score of 380Mbps Rx/tx on the lite but I wouldn't keep this setting in the real world. With the AC pro I get an average of 350tx/320rx at 40Mhz using the same testing device.
@@reuben-rt When i've used iPerf before you are normally going from a client on your machine to a "server" running on another machine, either inside our outside your network.
I have 20 Aruba IAP-325 at my main office and manage a half dozen Unifi off-site locations. The usable WiFi sphere around each Aruba AP is about double that of a Unifi AC Pro. The Aruba gear automatically manages RF channels and client roaming. Unifi gear picks a channel at boot and relies on the client to make roaming decisions.
@@gtwannabe2 Too bad that the Aruba controller UI is absolutely horrible. Their hardware is great, but their software needs to match the others in the industry. Meraki, for all their limitations, makes networking a breeze.

I'm sad that they dont have an AX product yet. Cisco, Aruba, Ruckus all have some decent products here, I get that alot of those are powered by FPGA but even Engenious has a product at this point. Even UBNTs amplifi line has had a wifi6 model for months

Same! Bought a Asus router for that reason to use with my wirreless network card to game on- I rely on wifi for gaming so wifi 6 is a no brainer for me living with a family.
802.11ax hasn't been finished by now, so they will wait to be fully compliant. They have had compliance problems in the past by pushing too fast. It won't matter that much for their home line amplifi, but unifi is made for scaling and business environments
I am working on some home upgrades. I am debating between having 3 AP HDs and an in-wall HD vs. 3 AP Pros and an in-wall HD. From watching the AP explained videos I had settled on the AP Pros since even that seemed like overkill but Ubiquiti released the Design Center and it appeared that my coverage area would only be in the green with the Pros vs the more red/orange and yellow coverage zone with the HDs. I have a lot of newer devices utilizing 5GHz but most smart home devices still require 2.4GHz. Would you do the Pros or HDs?
a stiff toot wafting through the air can change signal drastically(lol) sometimes just moving a small devices, sticks or laptops 1/2" can make or break it with 90%+ changes. a tricks I do for usb, tv and other wifi sticks is add a short usb/hdmi/dispaly port extension so they can be relocated out from behind a tv to say a top shelf, wall or down pole(ceiling hung tv's) of course I prefer ceiling mounted AP's as central to the whole area of coverage, I don't install tons a year but always solve long standing issues.
Where I get frustrated is in the whole Nanobeam, rocket, etc lines of radios in PtP and PtMP. I frequently have clients ask me about outdoor wifi and I usually hire a consultant with very specific knowledge in that area, but he is a die hard Cisco guy. It would be nice to have the outdoor radios like that in a comparison, not so much bandwidth, but compatibility. I have my go to kits now for that pole in the middle of the parking lot that I need 4 cameras, but other use cases frequently require me to dig through spec sheets to check input power, radio frequency, which ones do PtP and which do PtMP...
I would like to turn off the WiFi AP at night in my home, automatically at a certain time or manually from App or control software. Is there a function to just turn off the transmission module in the AP and is there a programmable timer for this in the control software? I could not find any information on the Ubiquiti website.
Really wish the Unifi line had a true long-range access point. My old ASUS RT-N66U at max antenna power would still keep my phone connected 1300 feet away on the other side of our field.....
Been watching all your videos to try and decide which APs to get for my UDM. The UDM by itself doesn’t connect outside my concrete block, 2-story hurricane bunker-of-a-home. I have 21 2.4GHz devices (5 outside), 10 5GHz devices (3 outside), 6 roaming mobiles devices, 4 of which are WiFi 6 compatible. Nothing outside or inside my garage will connect reliably if at all. Am I fine with 2 FlexHDs or two UAP-AC-M-Us rabbit ear access points? Should I buy any of the WiFi 6 betas or wait? Can those be added later and mesh with existing non-WiFi 6 devices?
I've tested the nanoHD vs the Pro at home (also one at a time) and found that the 5GHz was a lot stronger on the nanoHD. I think this is an important metric, if you want to set up an environment with fast connection (good 5GHz coverage). Since you can then stay connected to 5GHz at longer ranges plus potentially using less AP's to cover an area.
This was exactly the opposite for me. My Nano's have been collecting dust for about a year now. I have been thinking about tossing them on, updating to see if it makes a difference now.
I'm sure you did, but it would be helpful to hear that you cleared the channels for your testing. Co-channel or adjacent channel interference introduces yet another performance variable. Hopefully you control your lab's environment and can sanitize it as needed. In the real world there's always somebody in the next apartment blasting away -40dB on ch3 40MHz, but that's a different problem with different solutions and different testing.

What I'm missing in all comparison is info about how long they will be supported and when end-of-sales / end-of-life will be. So the AC series (gen 2) have been on the market for already a couple years. The gen 3 series (nanohd, ac hd) are a bit newer. So I'd expect the gen3 devices to have a longer lifetime from the current date. It's kind of a gamble with Ubiquiti. But I think this is a mayor buying decision. How long can I use it?

Unless you have a particular need for the very high density abilities of the AC-HD, I'd limit your search to the AC-PRO and the NanoHD. For most people I'd recommend saving a few bucks and going with the AC-PRO but if you have compatible devices or expect to have compatible devices in the near future, the AC Wave 2 MU-MIMO feature of the NanoHD may be worth it.
The guy doing my install wants to use this in wall unit instead of the UAP AC Pro. They are being installed in my home and I will have 3 access points...1 in basement, 1 on main floor and 1 on second floor. Im also going to need coverage above my garage and basement door for Ring Cams. Which is the better unit?? Can the in wall units have furniture in front of them or do you need to be completely open to the room? This is not my industry so Im kind of at an installers mercy. I need my whole house to be lit up well. TIA
Unless you need the switch ports I would have gone with the AC Pro or LR. What did you end up with? 3 APs for one house seems excessive unless it is quite large or has radio blocking issues. I have a 1500 sqft single level house 3/1 and I have a single UAP-AC-LR located in the front center/side of the house and I have reasonable coverage all over the house.
@@gilbatzri My home is roughly 4000 sqft on 3 floors. I have 4 in wall units. Things seem to be working well. In addition to coverage on all floors. I needed to insure I got coverage in my garage for my irrigation system as well as outside my home in the far corner. My emergency generator required wifi as well.
recently upgraded my $400 linksys router and installed a netgate. Thinking of scrapping the Linksys and getting a unify switch + 2 AP's. still hesitant because I don't know if I can get the same if not better coverage compared to my Linksys EA9500.
Tom. Have you any observations to make about deploying mesh networks for larger buildings? Presume that technology delivers a more consistent performance than a set of conventional WAPs?
nice review but I am looking to see a new generation of WAPs from Unifi that uses the Wi-Fi6 standard. They are coming very slow to bring these products to the market!!
Wifi sucks... I have two AC-Pro units in my house. Mainly to cover mobile devices that can have flaky connections and it is no big deal. Generally it works fine for those sorts of things. Everything else is wired. Have plans to run even more wires soon.

I couldn't get a consistent 5ghz out of the Nano's in my home...bought Pro's and instantly connected with no problems.

Hi Tom, putting a transceiver too close to a receiver will cause an overload where the data cannot be decoded.

For as long as you want. Unifi still supports 1st Gen UAPs, no problem.

Can the in wall units have furniture in front of them or do you need to be completely open to the room? This is not my industry so Im kind of at an installers mercy. I need my whole house to be lit up well. TIA
Unless you need the switch ports I would have gone with the AC Pro or LR. What did you end up with?
3 APs for one house seems excessive unless it is quite large or has radio blocking issues. I have a 1500 sqft single level house 3/1 and I have a single UAP-AC-LR located in the front center/side of the house and I have reasonable coverage all over the house.
@@gilbatzri My home is roughly 4000 sqft on 3 floors. I have 4 in wall units. Things seem to be working well. In addition to coverage on all floors. I needed to insure I got coverage in my garage for my irrigation system as well as outside my home in the far corner. My emergency generator required wifi as well.

Have a client with an apartment above the business. Don't really want to deploy a saucer in the apartment
recently upgraded my $400 linksys router and installed a netgate. Thinking of scrapping the Linksys and getting a unify switch + 2 AP's. still hesitant because I don't know if I can get the same if not better coverage compared to my Linksys EA9500.

Mesh is a solution where you cannot put another wired access point. It's never a better idea to mesh.

UAB-NanoHD 2.4ghz sucks so only get like 4mb down so i just switch back the UAP-AC-Pro

All are good for home. Everything above PRO is overkill in my opinion.
nice review but I am looking to see a new generation of WAPs from Unifi that uses the Wi-Fi6 standard. They are coming very slow to bring these products to the market!!
It's because there isn't even a finished official standard for 802.11ax by now, and also you won't really benefit from it in home environments anyways
Wifi sucks... I have two AC-Pro units in my house. Mainly to cover mobile devices that can have flaky connections and it is no big deal. Generally it works fine for those sorts of things. Everything else is wired. Have plans to run even more wires soon.
