ROSA PONSELLE (January 22, 1897, Meriden, Connecticut - May 25, 1981, Villa Pace, near Baltimore, Maryland) Originally Rosa Ponzillo. Her parents were Italians who emigrated to the United States. She sang with her sister, Carmella Ponselle, in American vaudeville under the name the Ponzillo Sisters. The impresario William Thorner heard her by chance and obtained a audition for her at the Metropolitan Opera. There she was helped by Enrico Caruso and the completely unknown singer made her debut with him (1918) as Leonora in La Forza del Destino. Her success was overpowering and at a stroke Rosa Ponselle became world-famous. She was thereafter a principal singer at the Metropolitan and had numerous triumphs there. Her greatest were Rachel in La Juive in 1919 and Giulia in Spontini's La Vestale in 1925, as Norma in 1927, and as the title role in Luisa Miller in 1919. She appeared at Covent Garden, in Chicago, and in San Francisco and had a brilliant career as a concert singer, In 1933 she sang Giulia in La Vestale at the Maggio MusicaleFestival. In 1936 she married the American industrialist Carle A. Jackson and withdrew from musical life. Since then she livedin Baltimore; in 1954 she permitted the publication of later records in which her voice retained all of its beauty. Rosa Ponselle's voice possessed an extraordinary volume and beauty of tonal production because of her secure grasp of the technique of singing, and this in turn permitted her to master the most difficult bel canto roles without any strain. Together with Enrico Caruso and Titta Ruffo, Rosa Ponselle had a voice of elemetal power that other singers did not possess. The effect of their voices upon the listener was hypnotic. In my opinion, no other voice(s) since then had this kind of quality or effect.

No comparison to to days artists,why they study the ones of the past,Bel Canto is beautiful,not the shouting we hear nowadays through modern technology which often distorts sound,we have got used to that I regret.Rene 88 yrs

Callas was right. There isn't anyone who can touch Ponselle, especially in "Norma." Her voice is gorgeous, big, and you don't have to make any excuses like the old school queens do for certain famous divas who hoot and wobble ("Oh, but it's drama," they say, "You don't understand.").

There was a 75th birthday LP which has her own recollection of her discovery and debut she talks for about 8 minutesmaybe it's on UA-cam?
too bad she retired so early- but she was a bit of a perfectionist or just couldn't stand the expectations

The only curious part is the phrase “il cor ti diedi”, which is broken up into small non-legato triplets but no matter-this is a sacred immortal monster if I’ve ever heard one.
Did she record "in mia man alfin tu sei", or "Deh non volerli vittime"? It's very frustrating to have only 3 or 4 pieces on the whole opera...
Nothing wrong with the coloratura in this recording. Seems some like to point out that Ponselle suffered under a lack of technique!

I don't believe it's a matter of racism. She was born at the USA so she was american. Al Capone was a gangster "born to two perfectly Italian parents in US territory" (your words...). From your point of view Capone was an italian gangster, wasn't him? (and I am not anglo-saxon).
