    Prepping to DM LMOP for my 1st ever DND game so I've been binging a few videos. Must say this is the best streaming setup I've seen so far. The high onscreen interactivity increases the viewing experience so much. Fully appreciate being able to see various dice rolls as well as the map and all character movements, which helps tremendously with allowing viewers to mentally keep up with the game. Thanks vm for the awesome viewing experience!

      Same here. Going to create my very first D&D session in the next couple of months and I'll be the DM as well. Going to start with this Starter Set campaign also and I'veen doing some notes, watching general DnD tips videos and reading the basic rules and the module for the past month and I feel like I'm not even close to being ready to actually run it.

      @@IdigN1 we never really fill prepared, and to be honest we never really fully prepares in the first 3 or 4 sessions. But then you start getting the handle, the roleplaying help 90% with random tables you can have on your dm screen even with post-it!
      Good luck all, going on my 4 session plus 2 session of character creation it was done with 6 players but we only end up with 5 to play the campaign.

    Forever DM here. Even as a homebrew guy, having a mineshaft adventure in your back pocket as a DM is an awesome asset. I personally love adapting pre-written adventures and incorporating them into my homebrew sessions. I think WotC does a good job with the dungeon designs, but sometimes they need a little help on the story side.

      @SwindlersDen  2 роки тому

      I can’t speak for griz but if I remember correctly, the surprise round makes it very easy for the party to get TPK’ed in the first fight so that’s probably why he didn’t use it

      @frankprendergast8020 2 роки тому

      @@SwindlersDen👍❤️. I didn't expect a reply, so thanks for replying.
      The first one I watched was from the WOTC themselves and THEY ignored the surprise round. I found it frustrating that the guys who created the rule system ignored the rule system on the very first encounter, so I left That playthrough.
      The 3rd playthrough I watched did it satisfactory. Two PCs spotted the goblins and got to act in the first round and two didn't so they were surprised.
      When you ignore the very first encounter suggested way of running it, that doesn't bode well for the rest of the scenario.
      I can understand someone who moves up to the dead horses to check it out and they say they are keeping an eye out in the forestry, that is up on a rise, for any suspicious activity would get a perception roll but otherwise it's passive perception.
      .
      I am a DM and gamer of 29 years so I'm not a noob to the game. I've been playing 5th edition for about a year now and to be honest I'm not a fan, but my friends are and they like it.
      We started with dragon heist and are now in the dungeon of the mad mage scenario and getting bored of all the 'dungeons' as is the DM. We played the one off Vecna lich scenario and had him defeated in 5 combat rounds, I think the DM when easy on us.
      The DM has asked me to run the Starter set so that he could have a go at being a PC, so I wanted to see what it ran like. I'll be starting this Friday with the provided PCs.

    • @SwindlersDen
      @SwindlersDen  2 роки тому +2

      I think the adventure as a whole is one of their better ones, but as with anything in 5E, all rules are optional so you can mess around with whatever. Try not to overprep, and good luck with your game!

    • @frankprendergast8020
      @frankprendergast8020 2 роки тому

      @@SwindlersDen ran the first part of the scenario on Saturday last. In the goblin surprise round two of the group were actively scanning the three line as the cart approached the Dead horses and got a perception roll the others use their passive perceptions. Three of the group where surprised and one got to act on the surprise rd. The wizard dropped unconscious on the surprise rd but 3 rounds later the goblins were defeated, one goblin escaped into the Forest. After some healing, the group proceeded to follow the trail to cragmaw hideout where they surprise attacked the two goblin guards and defeated the Change-Up wolves. Session ended there till the next time. All 4 group members are still alive, so far.

    Question for either the channel or anyone here running this campaign: Did you start your party at level 1 or level 2? I am going to be running this soon and see lots of people online recommending starting at level 2, as the first encounter, plus the cave can easily kill a level 1 party with a few unfortunate rolls.

    • @SwindlersDen
      @SwindlersDen  4 місяці тому +1

      We started at level 1, and the cave certainly was a challenge for us. It's all personal preference - starting from level 1 can be easier for new players to grasp and can feel more rewarding, but if you'd rather be safe, level 2 is also a totally viable option. You can always add a low level magical item or shuffle some NPCs around if you're feeling nervous

      @@SwindlersDen thanks for the response and advice! I've played tonnes of D&D, just never DM'd, and will be playing with unknowns on Roll20, so will perhaps have to gauge based on how new they are (looking for newer players in general), and maybe slip a health potion or two in, or level 2 if I feel they need it. I'll probably end up playing it safer than necessary due to not wanting added stress of dealing with a TPK on my first DM session

      so the the roll on the left is the normal roll however if you roll with advantage or disadvantage you roll 2 dice. Advantage you take the higher of the two numbers disadvantage you take the lower of the two numbers.
      We have it set to always roll 2 dice for convenience sake mostly so if a character doesnt have advantage or disadvantage we always take the first roll (the one on the left)

    I don't under stand why there stats go below 8 and some are 18 at start. And a fighter with - str and a paladin with 0 cha?

      For this campaign, we did stats a little bit weird. We rolled a D4 and added that die to 70 for our stat total, and then allocated points into whatever stats we wanted. I figured Jeb wouldn’t be a strong guy, so I put only 8 into his strength, and focused more on other stats.
      All classes have prerequisites, and for the fighter class you need a 13 in either strength or dexterity, which is why Jacq is a dex-based fighter (I played an arcane archer once, it was super fun). As for Valiada, I think that’s just a custom thing that griz and Baka ruled maybe? Strength is more important to Valiada than her spells so that’s probably why she can get away with low charisma (always consult your DM for these things). Hope this helped!

      @@SwindlersDen as far as I've seen you only need a 13 charisma as a Paladin if you want to multiclass (which was not my original intention with Valiada) and as a newer player I was still getting a hold of how to allocate stat points when given free use of them. Luckily Valiada didn't need as much Charisma because I relied on her melee potential more than her spell saves, but I did realize it was hiding her back especially because I made everything average except for Strength. I believe she was also missing a point or two of her total stats because I had to custom make the goliath race on roll20 because we didn't have the race purchased at this point and just missed it (again was still learning) we did reroll her stats for season 2 and made them more optimal, but she still did pretty good with these stats for this campaign.

    you ignored the fact that the players were surprised the first round, that the goblins had cover, that they can hide as a bonus action and that the landscape gives cover.
    It is very wrong that people can attack and track through dense thicket with no knowledge.

      @@petegiant I'm pretty inexperienced with the total cover stuff but I know the module officially reads to "check to see who, if anyone, is surprised" using a passive perception check against the goblins d20+6. They'd have to roll really low but it is possible. Statistically, yeah the party should be surprised more often than not. Allowing them to get a good taste of how important stealth/surprise can be. Are you against allowing an active check if a player requests it? A higher roll or successful passive check against bad stealth roll could mean they noticed their presence, not that they see them (in regards to total cover).
