Speech therapy for 2-year-olds is all about communication intention, building routines, and following the child's lead. This is because they have a low attention span and probably can only concentrate around 5-10 minutes with you at a time.
Does your child have speech problems? Relax, it’s normal for 2-year-olds to have speech errors. Check out what your child should be able to do at 2: www.asha.org/public/speech/de...
Because you cannot sit your 2 years old down to drill speech sounds. You should try doing these:
Build phonological awareness - speak slower and articulate sounds clearer. Sing songs and clap out syllables to your child.
Bombard your child with the sounds that she hasn’t learned yet. Emphasize it when you come across a word that has those sounds.
You can wait a bit until you start speech goals, focus on developing his language first!
    Communication temptation:
Show the child something s/he wants. Remember, if you don’t start off with something that he likes, you’re not giving a reason for him to talk to you.
Tempt her to communicate with you. You might play with the desired toy, eat her favorite snack, it doesn't matter. Make her want it - sell it hard!
Teach a gesture, a sound, or a word and then give the desired item. You’re building the link between communicating and getting something desirable. Do this many times and it’ll become automatic. Because now he knows the power of speech/gestures.
    Build a routine
As simple as pushing a car, a ball, push on the swing. Find a routine that you can engage your child with. Try everything!
It must be something you can do over and over again. It’s not boring if it works and he keeps coming back for it!
When he can anticipate, you can tempt communication.
Following the child’s lead (language facilitation)
Let the child choose the toys - many times we decide what’s best for the child. By giving her the freedom to choose, we also allow ourselves to observe what she likes.
Allow the child to show you how he plays - we learn from our child so that we can use it later to teach what we want. Without this information, it’s very difficult to chime in and become a playmate.
Follow the way he plays, copy what he does, and go with the flow. Be selfless, put the focus on the child. I know you want him to talk but that’s a selfish thought. Meet him where he’s at and have fun!
The main point for this is to build communication intention, the single most important thing at this age!

With the fact that our 2 1/2 year old grandson lives with us and is being brought up bilingual ( English/German) and that we’ve been in various types of Covid lockdowns for the last year, during which contact with other children was minimal, we missed the fact that he is on the spectrum. This 9 minute video is so helpful in getting me out of panic mode and into accepting and trying to understand his world. Thanks for the tools to help us communicate better.

I struggle with this so hard living with my bf, his mom and brother. Whenever my daughter goes up to them, they don't engage. Instead they say, what ? Or huh? They don't even try to implement speech..this bothers me since I feel like I'm the only one trying to assist her communication. Idk how my bfs mom did it when she had kids but the way she's doing it now is not it.

This is helpful, my daughter is 2.5 months with speech delay and she now started to bubble and imitate almost everything I say or heard but not clear just sounds and rhyme. She is good in Vowel sounds but couldn’t pronounce consonants. When I tried to teach her word like “open” Ooo-pppp-een, trying to pronounce them each slowly, clearly but couldn’t say it, sometimes I would hear her say the “O” only or “Ey”. She couldn’t pronounce P and B, having hard time to say it. I’m thinking if I should get her to speech or I’ll wait. She calls me “daddy” but call her mom “yaye”😅 instead of mommy. But when I asked her to say mama, she could, but not using it to her mommy 😆.

Hello Sir, Can i ask what tip you'll give to a 6 years old boy that is struggling with for ex. pronouncing the word "ship" and he says "dip" something to do with "s" and"d" sound / "faith" and then he says "baith". Your tip really is a great help.

    • @AgentsofSpeech
      @AgentsofSpeech  3 роки тому +1

This is what we call "stopping" he changes /s/ &/sh/ to /d/ and /f/ to /b/....
I would suggest that you work on his /f/, try if he can do the /f/ sound by itself first.
Very difficult to tell you more here, the best advice is: find a qualified speech therapist to take care of it!

I would have to disagree with the idea that a 2-year-old isn't able to sit for a long period of time. I've observed my 2-year-old children sitting for extended periods based on the activity at hand. I noticed that, depending on the activity, the child will stay engaged for a while. Following a child's lead is cool, but you need a balance of allowing the child to follow your lead as well.
