      When that happened, I got out of my chair and went straight for the vodka.
      After maybe a half hour of hard drinking, my wife asked if she could use the console for watching something. I just asked nothing related to space, aliens or video games if at all possible. She wasn't in to any of those so it was safe bet she was gunna put on something like that Ninety Day Fiancé she and her sister had been watching.

    Andromeda holds an interesting place for me. I played it for a bit when it first came out, then shortly after had a terrible breakup with my girlfriend at the time and took a good amount of time away from it.
    Fast forward just under two years and my mother passed away from cancer. I returned to the game just days after and started it from scratch. The galaxy and planets, as empty as they seemed, hit the perfect spot for me. The music, the atmosphere, and even that emptiness made it easy for me to get lost in everything. Something I hadn't been able to do in a game or anything for a long time. One of my early days of my playthrough I played for eleven hours straight (with healthy short breaks). Something I hadn't last done since the very first Mass Effect.
    So while the game is flawed, and deserves a lot of criticism, in many ways it hit exactly what I needed at the right time. Flaws and all.

  • @sykora9526

    I think one of the most important things you forgot to mention is just how the game has this huge premise about making first contact, being the first ones there responsible for setting things up, but literally everything is done for you. The other ark got there before you and met the Angaran people before you, so you never get to make that first contact, overcome the language barrier, all of that. It's all already done for you. You never get to properly set up the worlds that you try to inhabit, the terraforming devices are already there and set up by the Remnant. Not only does this lead to bland exploration and cookie cutter process of just setting up the remnant terraformer on every world, but the worlds themselves aren't even that original. Eos is just your bog standard desert world (Tatooine), Voeld is just Hoth, Havarl has some interest as the homeland of the Angara but there's so little civilization there that you actually get to explore. Kadara is literally already settled. And then there's just another hot world, I don't even remember it's name cus it's just that forgettable. The beginning of the game is so cool cus it sets you up on this hostile world and you have to overcome and try to settle it and everything and then all of that is thrown away as soon as Clancy Brown dies because everything is just done for you, you don't get to do ANY of it yourself. I remember playing through the game the first time and getting to the Anagaran world and meeting them for the first time and being ecstatic like, how were we gonna get over the language barrier, how were we gonna make peace and everything, and then being utterly disappointed and heartbroken as soon as they just... understand what we were saying, saying how we're like the others they met. I guess we were a Pathfinder after all, cus we found the path that someone else created rather than making our own path.

    • @NizarElZarif
      @NizarElZarif 4 роки тому +3

      From what I heard they first intended for you to be the first contact, but since nothing would be developed before you arrive, the story content would be very light (think of fallout 76). They also experimented with random planet generation but also they said the novelty of exploring an empty generated world would go away quickly (like no man sky). I think the entire premise of moving to Andromeda is difficult to build on. This is why the Trilogy games takes you 30 years after first contact so the world and relation with humans have time to build up. I do believe they made an interesting setting with the Kett/angaran/remnant/Builders. What I think they needed a lot more well written and acted side-quests that ties to the world like in the witcher 3. Post-final mission content, and the Quarian arc DLC that included more exotic Planets. What they also could work is a settlement building, and these settlements can come handy in the final mission and provide real benefits.
      From what I heard they tried a lot of different approaches but they didn't pan out and end up wasting time.

      @@seanthompson8071 I think that a lot of things came together to make the original Mass Effect such a hit. For one, the writing was profound and powerful. Animations were excellent, and for their day the graphics were spot on. Andromeda is just so barren, and where it tried to feel "Mass Effecty" it just comes off as a cheesy ripoff, rather than a well thought and fleshed out story. allow me to point out why it felt so empty : THE REMOVAL OF PLAYER AGENCY IN A SETTING DEPENDANT ON PLAYER AGENCY= they highlight exploration but you are not free to explore both new planets and outsice the confinds of the planets allowed.
    THE REMOVAL OF PLAYER CHOICE = they highlight your making choices but none of the choices you make have weight behind them outside of the final battle
    LIMITED OPTIONALITY = from basic things like being able to ware whatever clothes you want that is in the game including base combat suits and casual clothes to angaran or kett clothing or casual themed clothes to only being able to speak to specific npc's the limit is very shallow and markably less freedom then even in ME3 .
    character creation also falls in this realm as other games were expanding on that area this one was offering near nothing hense almost all characters made in this game look like everyone elses even if they have never met it means where people would dedicate entire websites to making templates you could not do that with this game and that made the ryders feel like they lacked personality .and no post game play in a setting that encurages post game play. if these things were present in the game not only would exploration setteling and colonization have purpose but would have amounted to countless hours and countless play through options.
    they highlighted freedom of play but offered you hidden rails
    glitches and graphic/physics issues can be fixed as time has proven - and while extremely bad and should be pointed out the lack of freedom and true exploration is what kills this game.

      I have to disagree with this one. Yeah there are a lot of unnecessary comedic moments but most of the characters felt very real to me and were written with interesting conflicts and beliefs. Suvi's religious bit, Vetra and her seemingly uninterested, laid back exterior hiding a pwerson that is constantly worried and does everything to protect her family. Liam and his passion to breach the differences between the Milky way races and the new guys (whatever their name was). Peebe and her strange attempts to detach herself from every emotional connection after being put through an obvious manipulative and toxic relationship that she is still snared in even at the end of the game. I could go on. Honestly the only person I really couldn't give a flying shit about (but I was apparently supposed to) was 'the other Ryder' because the game just forgot about them until the climax of the game. Andromeda had issues, but I personally don't see the characters as a part of the problem.

It was ridiculous how easily Cora accepted that an incompetent kid with no experience or training took her promotion basically because of total nepotism. Where's the distrust towards the random new leader? Why are serious conversations and dangerous situations constantly spoiled by humor? Andromeda felt like a sitcom to me.

    As I was idly listening to your description of the Kett, I found myself spinning off into innumerable what-if scenarios. I am wholly aware that these idle thoughts mean nothing, but for other's - hopeful - entertainment... How do you follow up an ineffable, cosmic horror antagonist? With a pure cosmic antagonist. On reflection I think this is actually what they were going for, but they didn't take it far enough: What if one removed the Kett entirely, shifted focus to the Scourge and crank it up to eleven. By itself, the Scourge felt like a pretty thinly veiled mechanism for creating tension (probably to be explored in later entries).
    But what if it hadn't been? The Initiative arrives in an alien galaxy, only to find it on the brink of collapse, entirely clusters consumed by an ever growing, ever consuming cloud of an unknown material. The colonists, forced to improvise, must rush to save the few remaining planets from being consumed by the cloud of destruction. But with limited engineering resources, they need to approach the few remaining civilizations who have managed to survive the Scourge, some of whom have begun to worship the cloud as the harbinger of the next plane of existence and are resistant to outsiders attempts to abort their enlightenment. Upon a daring sortie into the cloud itself, it is discovered that it is made of an unnaturally occurring alloy of Ezo and an unknown material. After more research, this material is discovered to be partially Dark Matter, which has begun interacting with Ezo chaotically. (Thus making the game fundamentally about the Mass Effect, and tying it to the ever illusive Dark Matter/Energy B-plot from the trilogy). The heros must find a way to halt the spread of the Scourge, or all life in Andromeda is doomed, perhaps even all life, if the phenomenon spreads....
    Edit: Minor grammatical fix.

      There are things that da2 legitimately did much better than origin did, such as representing character relationships and showing the unique elements of dragon age lore. I'll chose da2 over origins every time for those reasons.
      I don't think anybody is going to do that with andromeda vs me 1, 2, or 3, as it doesn't actually do anything better than its predecessors, and does most things quite badly. It's just a worse story wrapped over a stripped down Dragon Age: Inquisition gameplay loop.

    • @Blirre
      @Blirre 4 роки тому +2

      @@AStrangeWindmill Agreed. Origins has more world building for obvious reasons and great characters, but DA2 has better graphics and animations which does affect the atmosphere a lot and it gives characters more personality. The fighting also felt better balanced (but not yet perfect). The biggest sin is the lack of variety in the environment, but then again I was also so done with the Deep Roads the first time I completed Origins so I wouldn't say Origins was much better in that sense either. Imo DA 2 is still way better than this bc it follows the same lore and has a fleshed out personal story, based on the original world (mage vs templar, mysterious grey warden, etc), despite the horribly repetitive maps, the personal stories are pretty good.
      While adromeda is trying to grasp the magic that ME has, it doesnt work that way bc while DA is wrapped around its world, ME was wrapped around Shepard. So for people wanting to play ME it was just... off. Like an awkward limb, I'm not sure how to say it but it feels more like a parasite trying to latch on to the original series when the only thing it does is make it worse.

    • @Blirre
      @Blirre 4 роки тому +1

      @@rarafarara It wasn't just wrapped around Shepard though because there was an overarching political theme and social structure which could have carried a new story. Instead they tore all that down too and started from scratch without any of the historical baggage which had made the story interesting. There was no unification of the species to fight a common evil because everyone was already more or less unified, just kind of scattered. The bad guys weren't ominous enough and the overall goal of the game was pretty vague too. DA2 was great actually. It wasn't the best but at least I wasn't bored while playing.

      Honestly, there are *so* many side-stories mentioned in ME1-3 but never shown in the games. They could quite easily be adapted into a series of mini-campaigns as you were talking about.
      Want a noir-esque story about a futile fight against corruption? Play as Garrus in his Archangel period.
      Want a cop drama, akin to LA Noire but set on the Citadel? Play as Garrus in his C-SEC years.
      Want a galaxy-spanning chase after an elusive, shadowy enemy? Play as Samara hunting Morinth, before they pass through Ilium.
      Want a 'classic' war story, similar to so many FPS games right now? Set one during the First Contact War. Or the Krogan Rebellions, if you feel like being daring and including a setting without Humans.
      Want a techno-thriller full of hacking, counter-hacking, information tracing, etc? Play as Tali in her pre-Freedom's Progress, pre-Haestrom missions against the Geth.
      Want an adventure story about discovering ancient alien ruins & exploring them, dodging traps and mercenaries along the way? Play as Liara, pre-Therum.
      Heck, they could even branch out into different genres entirely: the ME setting has enough solid lore & fluff on how the universe is set up and how space-combat works; make a 4x game set in the ME universe. =
      Any one of these could genuinely be its own (single) game with just a bit of inventive writing, while fitting within the existing ME setting.

It's like the crew was just disconnected from reality and just how serious their role was in finding a new home while also avoiding open conflict with a new alien species and somehow outmaneuvering the Kett. The whole vibe just had a very cheesy, relaxed fanfic feel to it, rather than a serious addition to the Mass Effect universe. I had similar issues with DA: Inquisition, but there were legitimate characters in DA:I that provided much more grounded and realistic attitudes toward their responsibility and the threat they were up against. ME:A just felt like the entire game was the Citadel DLC, which while fun and enjoyable, is just completely separate from the rest of ME3 and has a very tongue in cheek attitude. I think the writing and characters were SO good in the original mass effect trilogy that no new story afterwards would be sufficient for the fandom. I think the devs knew that to an extent as well and got discouraged from putting all of their passion into it. Nothing sucks more than putting your all into something, only for people to still shit on it.
    Just the fact that they needed to go to a brand new galaxy in order to completely separate itself from the events of the first trilogy kinda show that. Although I also think the new setting is one of the strengths of andromeda, so it’s a bit of a double edged sword.
    Personally I think mass effect andromeda is a fine game. It’s got a decent enough story, the characters are ok, the combat is excellent, the crafting system is really solid, the facial animations while still goofy, aren’t as bad as they originally were.
    However, it can’t hold a candle to the original trilogy by any means. It’s like going from eating surf and turf every day to eating a decent burger. The burger would’ve been good, but in context to what you’re used to, it’s kinda garbage

    I feel like this game COULD have been an intro into the franchise. A showcase of the universe. And after then you'd start Mass Effect 1. So if you're new to the Mass Effect universe, I'd recommend playing Andromeda and then the original trilogy. I'd be much better that way as an overall experience.

    Couple more questions - how does a guard guard a 15km long mass relay while it floats out at the edge of a solar system? Where did the arks and Nexus discharge all that static that the lore says they must have accumulated while travelling twice as fast as any other ship in the franchise's maximum speed?

    • @Dreadwing1000
      @Dreadwing1000 4 роки тому

      Well guarding the relay kind of makes sense, I think canonically you have to approach the relay at a certain angle (ME1 mentions approach vectors in it’s intro), the animation always plays from the same angle at least but that could just be that using the one scene is easier, and as for the second point? Well it’s not the only lore breaking thing they did

    Regarding the graphics and animation after playing the holy trilogy and Andromeda back to back recently I’d say the trilogy had better character model and animations overall while Andromeda excels at the world design and look. Regardless I think the trilogy got the most important aspect right where Andromeda didn’t especially in a franchise like Mass Effect, the stiff character animation in Andromeda ESPECIALLY the humans make it hard for us to connect with most of them, and don’t get me started on the voice acting.

      From a lore point of view it could be nice to have it right around the time where Ryder is going to die of old age soon. Kind of a "last generation to have seen the Milkyway" thing. I've always found themes reflecting on what it means to be human (or sentient) in the trilogy. Transmission from generation to generation, memory, would be a nice theme. Three generations aren't enough to explore everything Andromeda would have to offer, so altough better settled, there still could be fresh new things to explore and wonder about on that front.

    • @owlyus
      @owlyus 4 роки тому

      @@k.v.7681 The thing I would add is that a mass relay is discovered at the edge of the Heleus Cluster at the beginning. Maybe that's too same-y from the originals, but it could at least give exploration a new context.

    There's a ton of missed opportunities but I think one of the biggest missed opportunities, especially in terms of making decisions that affect the rest of the game on a macro level, was the lack of political choice that you have. I think it would be really interesting to explain how the civilizations agreed to structure their government and their societies on the new worlds before they got there so that there was no disagreement after the fact.
    A really interesting plot point would be that they agreed to organize and establish a government in a certain way and then something happens and a group wants to do something different in terms of organization and structure of government yet there's pushback from the others. Both sides have valid claims between wanting to do things the traditional way that was already agreed upon versus doing something differently because it makes more sense now that they are actually there and are living the experience and you have to make the choice to either force the group to fall in line or deal with the blowback of letting that group do their own thing.

    Just a thought. The Nexus arrives at the edge of Andromeda, in a cluster inhabited by the second most powerful species in a Federation. They see your arrival with horror as they believe you to be extragalactic invaders. As your colonists begin to disembark, establish outposts, colonies, etc, they make contact with this species. After a brief scuffle and any misunderstandings are fixed, this new species seeing all the extragalactic aliens as a boon. One that can tip the scales in its favor for either supremacy or parity (for secession) against the strongest member species of its Federation. Now you have a choice, join the Federation and crush the secessionist you have already fought, fight with the secessionists after their convincing arguments, or remain independent and have to fight for your place in the cluster against both species who are now fighting themselves. Alternately you arrive in the cluster and 2nd strongest species makes contact and tries to engage in diplomacy, this causes species 1 to invade under justification of them colluding with invasive species.

    I still wish we'd have gotten the DLC that was promised, which would hopefully have answered some of the many questions left after the main plot ended. The game wasn't amazing, but it was decent enough that I was pretty invested in finding out what was going on with the Remnant, their ancient war, the dark matter spreading all over the cluster, hell I was even interested in what the Kett had planned. But my waiting was for nothing since the questions appear like they will never be answered.
    Fallen Order has shown that EA can let studios make a decent game if they simply stay out of the way, so hopefully they learned their lesson and don't put the next ME game through the hellish development that Andromeda went through.

    Actually I think your title makes perfect sense and you are right it is intergalactically disconnected but I believe that is part of its charm with the reaper thing in the milky way galaxy I figured the game would travel to a new galaxy any way because that has at times been what real world people have often thought about and since Andromeda is our closest neighboring spiral galaxy it and was considered to be the one most likely to have habitable planets in it I wasn't too surprised that Mass effect went that direction however for me the glitches were less a problem when it first came out I have planned video games that had many more glitches then Mass effect Andromeda one of the first games I had played before it was fully patched up used to keep crashing my machine that was fable 3 it took 2 1/2 to fix all the BS that was wrong with that game.

    I waited a few months after it's launch. I had a feeling it was going to suck on launch, and I was right. I picked it up just before the last update when they officially said they would not continue working on the game AND they wouldn't be working on any DLC. Bad management of the game and having to fight a game engine that struggled to handle the size of the game didn't help. Much of the bad facial animations, I didn't experience due to patches. The characters were okay, and the story was meh. The villain of the story just felt like a side thing at times. Past villains like Saren, The Reapers, and the Collectors seemed far more interesting than the villain of this game. I think the main failing of the game was that it was rushed at the end. The higher-ups realized the game wasn't up to par with any of the original Mass Effect games as testers who got to try the game reviewed it poorly. But they cared more about recouping their losses than fixing the game. If memory serves, I think they even placed a review embargo to make sure nobody got to see the pile of garbage they released that was going to be fixed later.
    After the final patch, the game is okay. It's not a great game like past Mass Effect titles, but it's okay and you do get some decent character development with the crew. Mass Effect is a great franchise and I hope they do decide to release new Mass Effect titles in the future. They may be waiting to see how sales go with the rumored Mass Effect Trilogy Remaster they are working on. If it sells well, perhaps they will redeem Andromeda with a propper Mass Effect title.

    I have always thought that andromeda got way more hate than it deserved. Of course it pales in comparison to the shepherd trilogy but it's still a great game when it stands on it's own. Technical mess aside, it did a decent job in setting up the galaxy and it's unfair to write off andromeda as we havent given it as much time as we gave shepherd to build the story.
    I have always felt that maybe Bioware would have been better off ending the mass effect universe and could have started off with andromeda or anything else set in a different universe. Let shepherd rest in peace, he has already done his part

    Well I can see you put a lot of effort into this video and I applaud you for it. Will have to say I agree with most of what you said although I will disagree on a few points.
    One is definitely your squad. While I will give you that most of the crew was passable if not solid, good characters Liam, PeeBee and Cora are not (at least in my opinion). After about six hours of playtime I was hoping that as the Pathfinder there would be an option to fire people from my crew. Cora and Liam would have been gone. Liam is mad that things aren't happening at lightning speed and takes every opportunity to tell you that. His loyalty mission while funny was entirely brought about by his reckless actions and every time I chose the line of dialogue that was the harshest it got turned into a joke.
    Cora's entire being is summed up as an Asari. She holds them in such high regard that it is actually a detriment to her character. In conversations with her I felt like I didn't know who she was because 'she' didn't know who she was. She felt like a human who is trying as hard as she can to be an Asari but is telling everyone that she knows she's not one. Hard enough finding new planets to for thousands of colonist but having a crew member going through an existential crisis adds a layer that shouldn't be there.
    PeeBee...... Annoying.
    The second thing would be the Kett and the Remnant.
    I do agree that the Kett are not scary and not mysterious. I will say though that those are just the Kett of this cluster. The Kett came to this cluster from somewhere else with the intent to turn all life into Kett. Basically just building there galactic empire just like the Protheans did but genetically altering them so they are part of the whole. The Kett in other clusters, hopefully without the Remnant, might actually be decent antagonists. Never on the level of the Reapers true but I can hope better than what we were given here. Although the genetic altering to be part of the whole is kind of the same thing as the Reapers but I digress.
    The Remnant is and are completely and utterly unneeded. You did not need to have this big mysterious technologically superior race that vanished only leaving their tech behind. The only thing the Remnant did in my mind that could have been part of the story was create the Angara. They didn't really even need to do that but it would have been okay. You should have been able to build your first colony and everything was going great until the Kett showed up. Then the game could have been about a race to colonize the other planets and defending them against the Kett. The precursor race leaving their technology behind for other races to find and flourish is played out and was done much better in the previous games.
    Notice you didn't say anything about the scourge. Wonder what you thought of that.
    Sorry that was long. Now that I vented I'm not sure I even want to post it.
