    So let me see if I get this right: The UN was founded to provide resolutions world wide, maintain peace, and overall find the best ending possible for all... but we gave special power to few to maintain their own interest over the others... genius... just genius...

      There is simply no reason for a major country to join the UN without veto power, since they already had power without the UN. Veto power was made to get everyone on board. It's better than no UN, and does reflect the world powers and their influence.
      Veto power should definitely be there.

    • @basicpenguin3844
      @basicpenguin3844 5 років тому +9

      Veto is such a horrible idea. All these countries have very different views and objectives. This way nothing can ever be done because someone will always be against something. I think it'd be better if they gave major countries a lot more voting power, so that their vote counts, for example, ten times the vote of other minor countries.

      The world should have rejected the UN the moment "Veto rights" were introduced. Only 5 countries have veto rights, making the rest of the world under their mercy. That is pure bs and authotarian. China and Russia agree on alot of things, so if one disagree the other will always support. The same goes with the USA, UK and France. Nothing will ever be done with the UN. Abolish it and start with a new organisation.

    The effectiveness of the United Nations relies on the following key reforms:
    1. Eliminating veto rights.
    2. Relocating the UN headquarters from the United States.
    Here’s why: Relocating the UN headquarters from the United States has merits, including enhanced neutrality, global representation symbolism, reduced security risks, better accessibility, potential cost savings, and improved perception among developing nations.
    3. Implementing consequences for nations that do not abide by the majority decisions.
    Here’s how: Economic Sanctions, Diplomatic Isolation, Travel Restrictions, Asset Freezing, International Criminal Court (ICC).

    Although the veto was a good idea at the time of conception, when the P5 did represent a good chunk of the world's interest to maintain balance, as well as being the countries with the capacity to intervene, this model no longer holds. May I point anyone interested to read up on a suggestion for the reformation of the UNSC by Professor Kishore Mahbubani where there would be an increase from 15 to 21 states separated into 3 categories to better represent the changing landscape of the world today.

That's why they had the marshall plan, to help rebuild a strong Germany as a buffer against the Soviets. So a seat could have been helpful in that regard. But that's not what bugs me. What bugs me is that there is no permanent Latin American, African or Muslim-majority member. That's just not fair. Then again, the fairest would have been if there was no veto power at all.

    The Iranian president pointed to the ongoing issues in Syria, including ethnic disputes, foreign support for terrorism and the US presence in the country, adding, “The Americans seek to prevent the Syrian government from taking control of all areas and they even think about partitioning the country.”
    He also noted that Israel’s bombardment of the Syrian territories and Tel Avi regime’s support for terrorist groups have exacerbated the ongoing crisis in the country.
    Rouhani underlined Iran’s position on Syria, including the need for the settlement of the crisis through dialogue, continuation of anti-terrorism campaign until complete eradication of all terrorist groups, and determination of the future of the country by the Syrian people without any foreign intervention.
    The president also pointed to the humanitarian crises across Syria and called on the international community to deliver more aid to the people in the country.
    The Ankara summit will be the second such meeting among the presidents of Iran, Russia and Turkey, as guarantors of ceasefire in Syria. Their first meeting on the issue was held in Russia’s resort city of Sochi on November 22 last year.

    Pérez de Cuéllar answers: “Peace will not bring the cessation of all conflict. It will only make conflicts manageable through means other than force or intimidation. . . . The United Nations seeks to train our vision towards that end.” So the only peace that the UN can achieve is control of violence.
    Is this really peace with security? True, “membership in the United Nations is open to all . . . peace-loving states.” (Article 4(1)) But will a nation that is peace-loving when it joins the UN stay that way? Governments change, and new rulers bring in new policies. What if a member turns radical, with extreme nationalistic aims and covetous territorial ambitions? And what if it begins arming itself with nuclear and chemical weapons? The United Nations would now have a ticking time bomb on its hands. Yet, as recent events in the Middle East show, such a turn of events may be the very thing to move the nations to empower the UN to remove this threat to their security.

    I think the United Nations should just split and not be a thing if they're not getting anything done then what's the point of them just like a United world country the UN is completely useless

  • @doodelay

    The UN has done so much, did you research this at all? Adding context would've provided the rich history of good that the UN has achieved for the world, both in the past and presently. Once that context was put in place then you could've transitioned into some of its ongoing problems. Or maybe you could've just titled this video better. But you didn't, and now you've got people thinking that one the top three greatest forces for good in the world is "useless."

      While the United Nations has intervened in some places and done "good", it is important to understand that the main motivator behind their actions(and inactions) is power. The UN is a decoy for the sophisticated power play going on behind closed doors and orchestrated by the P5. The US is the main source of funding for the United Nations - in 2019 alone, the UN received $11 billion. For context, that's about 1/5th of the funding for the collective UN budget. As we all know, the US has never done anything out of goodwill and it's obvious that they are paying their way through to influencing the "unbiased" organization. The UN has no "Rich history of good" lol. Indeed, it may be quite a shock to you, the United Nations is quite useless. Instead of brining peace and trying to resolve global issues amicably, it has become a showy front for developed countries (P5) to get their way around manipulating the rest of the world. Sometimes their ploy works (you're an example) and while keeping up appearances as an independent organization, they also manage to steer the spotlight away from the actions of their permanent members.
      The UN was built to replace the equally tragic League of Nations and quite frankly, it should have ended as quickly. Either the structure of the IGO changes to ensure transparency and equity or we start from scratch to build one that will.

    Palestine’s Hamas resistance movement has urged the Arab League to file a lawsuit with the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Israel over its recent killings of over a dozen Palestinians during anti-occupation mass rallies in the Gaza Strip.
    Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh made the request during a phone conversation with Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit on Monday.
    Haniyeh’s call for an ICC investigation came after the death toll from Friday’s Israeli attacks on Palestinian protesters along the border fence between Gaza and the occupied territories rose to 18.
    The Palestinian Health Ministry updated the number of the fatalities, after 29-year-old protester Fares al-Raqib succumbed to his wounds.
    On Friday, around 30,000 Gazans marched to the fence with the occupied lands at the start of a six-week protest, dubbed “The Great March of Return,” demanding the right to return for Palestinians driven out of their homeland.

    This Vetoing in the UN is great, I mean there is nothing more democratic, there 2 different sides with strong different point of view and interests there should be no veto saying yes or go for something when it is not acceptable for everyone in very serious questions.
    And I do not know why people with own personal political interests should have the rights to make wins in a civil war in another county, not only in Syria also so many other countries specially today in the Ukraine this country is bleeding out, because of that fact, Russia wants to keep this military and economical and Europa/USA loves the new capitalistic and total corrupted people of the Ukraine sitting on so many unused resources they all yearning for.

    “From our viewpoint, the presence of foreign forces in Syria without authorization of the country's government is illegal and must be stopped,” Rouhani said in Tehran on Tuesday ahead of his flight to the Turkish capital city of Ankara.

    Why should we change the UN security council just because the states that could always veto are vetoing things you like?

    • @logictruth1
      @logictruth1 8 років тому

      No because nothing major or urgent can ever get done as long as these five keep vetoing everything. It's like giving someone in the gouvernment a permanent place which you can't vote for or against and everytime the elected president wants to do something he must have it approved by that guy before he can lift a finger. It's essentially a less agressive dictatorship. It's not representative of the world and only serves those who have the right to veto.

    • @ArmpitSniffer6t
      @ArmpitSniffer6t 8 років тому

      Abdullah Sheikh Korean war was voted on by the UN. It passed. Why? The Soviet Union did not show to the meeting to veto the vote. We went to war because a permanent member was not there to veto a vote. It prevents wars, not peace.

    • @logictruth1
      @logictruth1 8 років тому +1

      6 Trillion
      It prevents everything. Not just war and not just peace but both. Any action that has two opposing interests will be vetoed by someone and that's the problem. Finding common ground between enemies is almost impossible which is why change is beyond difficult for such an organization to support. For better or worse. Not that it matters since none of these nations actually give a shit what the UN has to say as it's unable to show resistance anyway because somebody will veto that too.
