So refreshing to see someone who actually does the homework on an artist before critiquing their content. subscribed.
I thought the exact same thing. Instant subscribe for me!
I've been pretty intrigued by her music for a while now...
But this video makes me want to really delve into it. This is interesting stuff. A very different angle on pop music.
I'm almost through the video....and I'm really hoping he discusses her very first song *Ocean Eyes.*
Probably my favorite BE song. Such a GREAT melancholy minimal pop song. So aching and yearning. I'm curious how that feel is achieved from a music theory standpoint.
Please do episodes on BON IVER! 🎶
It's what we call intelligence. We can recognize that her work is unique and creative. I am myself a musician and I love understanding another musician state of mind even if I don't really enjoy the music.
InstaBlaster.
finneas is such a genius. he really should be crowned
One could evan say we should see him in a crown.
I'm sorry haha
16:16 Anyone else notice he was about to say Phineas and Ferb 😂
Hahaha lol
WAHAHA 😂😂
It was pretty damn obvious tho 🤣
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
i was gonna say the same thing lmao
Three words for Billie Eilish: Dark, textured, dynamic
Billie: Soft
EMOTIONAL
DARK
The fact that he's not getting a cent from these copyrighted videos deserves a lot of respect
thats why he advertises his own products every 2 minutes
@@DeBlauweOlifantthose things help you though 😂 he’s not promoting rubbish is he
Is it just me or is this the Musical Binging with Babish.
Yeah, but I'm fatter and my beard is better.
@@Holistic-songwriting YOUR NOT FAT🤬🤬
But his beard is better, though 😏
@@jeremiahspears7304 You! Get out of here! We don't respect your kind here. Shame on you. ;)
Dude I was literally just thinking this.
You should analyze FINNEAS’s own music and talk about how he writes! Definitely different than Billie’s style!
it's kinda insane how different it is from what he produces and writes for billie
@@user-rv7ge1tc4l Yes. That stood out to me a lot when I listened to Optimist for the first time. Usually when artist collaborate, especially where Finneas was already an established artist, they can't help but influence the sound of the other artist. But Finneas is very talented at focusing on Billie's image 100% and not getting in the way with his own ego. Really cool guy for that
@@shummers I wasn't a huge fan of optimist tho, ngl. Some of the lyrics were very cringy imo.
Bc in billie's songs she also writes and produces, even more than him in some songs.
@@Jack2729o Exactly!!! But people usually can't cope with Billie being able to write besides sing, so they stubbornly repeat the mantra that Billie is so successful only because of her brother's genius
She is definitely one of the most unique modern artists right now. thanks for this!
My three words would be deep, emotional and sensitive? Her music feels like a thin ice that's gonna break as soon as you step on it
Man, if this is your take away on Billie, I’d love to hear your thoughts on The Cure. So many of the things you associate with her, I associate with them, including the horror asthetic and the cinematic style.
I'd love to see one on Florence + The Machine!
I’d really love to see a video about how Jon Bellion writes a song.
Love to see a fellow Jon fan here :))
Thissss
Yup, I heard he wrote a chorus for Eminem.
Me too
Same!
3 words: Geniune, raw and dark.
Ive been using the addiction formula forever and had no clue you wrote this. I just wanna say thanks for changing my life dude!
Billie eilish creative, relatable and honest
One cool thing about Xanny that might not be immediately obvious, I only just noticed it recently - the descending bassline chords are the same as the structure for Goodbye. Xanny's bridge practically IS the song Goodbye. You can even hear the "Please" line in the background.
Yes! I genuinely haven't been this excited for a Premier since the final instalment Harry Potter.
How XTC writes a song
Andy Partridge and Colin moulding are geniuses
1. intense
2. versatile
3. perfect
3 words: adolescent, creative and rebel(in an individualist and emotional way).
For rebel i mean that i think she cares about her feelings first no matter what she's meant to behave but i find no word for that.
Please, Lana del Rey
Yes! she's a musical legend and deserves more appreciation
I really hope he does! Lana has such a specific and beautiful style/aesthetic that’s perfect to analyze!
I Really would like to know how Lana del Rey writes so hypnotic and beauty melodies too
Definitely
Even she inspired Billie!!
light, introspective, and accentuated.
Billie : selfless, hurt, understanding
My recommendation and why for your next video in The Artist Series.
I would love to see a holistic analysis of OneRepublic.
I think there is also a lot to be discussed with Ryan Tedder's style of writing.
I’m sure the average listener can not tell what songs he has written for other artists, and he has said in interviews he’s never wanted to be a producer that leaves their fingerprints on records. Nor does he want to be known for a certain style. Part of the reason Rumor Has It came about (other than because of Adele writing Rolling in the deep a few days earlier with the other writer on that song. And that they were inspired to do a dark bluesy record, and Adele wanted to talk about all the rumors being spread about her.) But also because the day before they wrote Turning Tables, and Ryan shared his frustrations to Adele about how he did not want to be known as “the ballad guy” because of Already Gone, Bleeding Love, Halo, Turning Tables, Love Somebody, which lead to him breaking away from that with Rumor Has It, Maps, Love Don’t Die, and more recently Sucker.
Anyways, my point is he’s doesn’t want to have a sound that puts him in a box. However when I listen to Brighter Than The Sun, I think: Ryan Tedder Melody (And even the style of the lyrics), when I read the lyrics of I Want You To Know, I think, wow this sounds familiar. I check the credits and sure enough he was the main lyricist on that song. In 1R songs and a lot of his cuts, there is a certain tendencies in lyricism that I immediately recognize as Ryan Tedder (however I’ve study almost all of his songs so maybe it’s just me). His harmonies and melody choices are also recognizable but I know that’s true for most singers anyway.
I also think that the amount of sync deals they have done shows how accessible they are, with Feel Again, Good Life, Start Again, and recently Better Days, there’s a quality to it that makes it super universal feelings that everyone can relate to in a sense. For example the opening line of Counting Stars “lately I’ve been losing sleep dreaming about the things that we could be” I find it hard to find someone who can’t relate to that in some sense. Even their most recent album is called Human. Their music is not for everyone sure, but their music talks about the human experience mostly.
I could go on and on but I’m sure you can make a really interesting video on the types of things they say, how there overall sound has changed very dramatically from being an alternative rock band at Coachella in 2006 to being dropped, then apologize getting remixed, them becoming a pop band. Dreaming Out Loud is pretty different from Waking Up, and then they went a lot more dance on Native and Oh My My. Oh My My also had quite a strange variety of sound. All of which I throughly enjoy. What type of listener likes One Republic, Ryan’s style of writing, and how they differ from the other types of bands they get compared to like Imagine Dragons and Coldplay which I think all three are drastically different from each other. And how all their singles compare to the deeper cuts on their albums.
I hope reading this Friedemann is inspired to make a video on OneRepublic. Thanks.
Yesss!!
I wholeheartedly agree. Tedder is one of the most interesting pop songwriters of the last 15 years or so and his discography is quite vast and diverse.
@@starsoflight Hmm....interesting to know.
My knee-jerk reaction to One Republic is rather dismissive. Not unlike my reaction to Imagine Dragons.
But...I've learned to temper my initial impression. For years I never listened to Coldplay...they were the butt of so many jokes. My loss. Once I _finally_ delved into their stuff...I was blown away. It's objectively great. I still hate Nickelback though. My open mindedness does have it's limits.... :P
But fuck...even then....every now and then I'll hear some Nickelback song that might have a really creative interesting riff in the pre-chorus. It's not much....but I think it's important to appreciate creativity no matter where it comes from.
Also, I have to check myself.....because any band/artist that becomes THAT popular....even if I personally don't like them, I have to realize there must be _something_ worthwhile there. Even if in the end, I genuinely don't like it.
Also....music you honestly hate can be educational. WHY do you hate it? And WHY do others love it? What's going on there? Am I wrong? Are they wrong? Is anyone wrong...or right? If I find a Nickelback song rote and derivative....why? From a music theory perspective....what is it about that song that feels like nails on a chalkboard to me? It's honestly fun stuff to think about.
I think anyone who truly loves music....and especially if they write their own music...should be willing to give ALL music a chance. Because there are diamonds in the rough. Case in point? That Britney Spears song Toxic....is really good! :)
@@avedic Todd In The Shadows did a good episode on OneRepublic's Counting Stars and Imagine Dragons' Demons. He also mentioned how easy it is to mix them up and I can't say I disagree.
1.vulnerable
2.down to earth
3.honest
My 3: Dynamic, Dark, & Daring
Glad to see the old format back. The time and effort made in these videos really shows and they're all super informative. A feeling I honestly missed with the other format.
The instrumental for this series is so perfect it really adds such a vibe as you break down each song
Soft, Dark, Unique
This video is so helpful! It reaffirms a lotof the things I've noticed about her music and Finneas' production style but you explained everything in such a clear way that it really locked everything in for me. Love this type of content! Great work!
I've played music for twenty years, and your channel is what I've been missing the whole time. This is incredibly valuable information; it's changed my outlook on songwriting in the course of maybe 72 hours.
Really loved that melodic analysis! 10/10
unconventional (dark undertones?), raw (unfiltered, refreshing), powerful
woooow this is amazing. love the dissection on every detail. and the movie ideas/comparison/inspo gives me chills. so real. I stan Billie & Fin sm ♡
So much good content from everyone today! And I just bought a bunch of good stuff for Black Friday. I am in such a good mood lol.
Amazing video. I’m learning songwriting & love Billie/Finneas- Great insight into their work!
That was awesome. Thank you!
I've managed to learn so much from this series - thank you for putting out such high-level and insightful content like this. I think it would be cool if you took a look at acts like The Killers, Wallows, Depeche Mode, The Cure etc. Each of those groups have put out songs that are so melodically rich that it would be interesting to see your perspective on. Thank you again!
Wow, this video was so in depth and informative TY! I subbed :)
This is a great and straightforward analysis. Thanks for the video.
thank you dude, this was an amazing overveiw and you've really given me hope for my writing!
Soo good. Love the format!
Just discovered your channel. Very good analysis, so interesting as musician. Very well presented, cool stuff. Subscribed.
Wow your vids are so helpful and informative
Hey hey where are you man we are missing you and this artist series😢 can't wait to see more learn more..
Great video! Love the concept of "writing visual music." I'd love to see a video on The Smiths/Morrissey personally. Always feel his lyrics are a league of their own.
Such a good video. Thank you 🙏
re-reading your book! its the best
"Inspirational database" really got me in my feels like optimistically? And I thank you for letting me feel better
As a Billie fan. I love that you’ve done this. I love everything music production and theory! I love learnin the more Finneas adds to things. Finneas is such a musical genius. Thank you for this

Dude, fantastic production. Keep it up!
I honestly have no clue how I´ve existed on the internet without ever coming across this channel. Super amazing.. Thank you for the awesome content.. Time to binge your channel ( binging with babish reference not so intended )
AMAZING analysis and I completely agree with her nursery-rhyme style. I was waiting for you to say that, and you did. Subscribed
thank you for sharing
Already excited!!!
This is excellent analysis! I've learned a lot. Subscribing.
Im about to buy everything you are selling, I’ve been watching your videos for a few months now & I just got to know the knowledge you have. I think it’ll really help me make songs more melodic & not just spend time guessing and on what’s going to sound good or what I’m trying to achieve
airy, close, groove= my three describing words
...I cannot believe you even covered her style into her videos as well. So damn excited haha, great work!
Thank you for making these:)
this sounds freaking awesome
This kind of video is the reason I subscribed to HS!
I think that taking a look at shawn mendes' album the comes out on the 4th would be really cool!
I love what you doing with the series I know few artist I would love to see you touch on that have been at the back of my mind from Beyonce to Janet Jackson to Whitney Houston and Aaliyah keep doing what your doing
With UA-cam being full of creators now that promote their own products/courses/something else to buy, I found that you actually did it really well in this video. You struck a nice balance between being genuine and authentic, while still getting your stuff out there. I get it, making content costs a schnizzleton of effort, time and frustration and I think it's sad that as consumers we've grown used to getting quality content for "free". But I get more and more upset with UA-cam every day, often having my time wasted by videos that claim to be informative but are just an ad in disguise. This video was none of that. And as a songwriter it makes me actually more and more inclined to listen to what you have to offer. So thank you for that, and please please, eventhough it may be hard keep trying to stay that way. Also...The "Artists Series" is one of the cooles breakdowns I've seen. If I could get these in a 1 hour format, I think I'd quit Netflix and instead pay for that (it'll be more expensive, that's okay.
Also, I'm so sorry for the rant. I want to add positivity instead of frustration and somehow hope I still managed. :) Cheers.
PS: Anyone ever feel like watching UA-cam content reminds you of porn?..search for hours through all the cheap generic stuff out there till you find something heartfelt and genuine to watch for 15 minutes.
You are literally so cool thank you so much for this video, I'll never forget you for it - helped me immensly. Immer gefährlich bleiben!
powerful
, real, inspiring
Where have you been all these months? I miss your content

This episode was genius
oohhh been waiting for this video for forever
my 3 words: intimate, honest and thus free
I was inspired and made a simplistic beat. It has a lot more character and direction than my other beats because I had a lot more control over exactly how I wanted it to sound. It sounds like something out of a movie
Thank for your vídeo
My three words are
Villainous, Vulnerable and empowering
ur a legend for this video bro

My words: Dark, playful, conflicted
Word also throw in "minimalist" if I had four!
Awesome.

Wow fascinating..I don't have synthesia I wish I did? I just freestyle to music till something sticks...I like new methods though..I normally get something out of a new methods Thank You I appreciate the work you put in to inspire us..and inspire us you have.
dark, cool, and appealing.
I've always found this kind of song/band analysis, lessons, top 5 trick about bla bla.. as clickbait and waste of time. Because maybe %5 is helpful and the rest is bait. That's how I experienced everytime. But your videos oh wow.. I've never seen this kind of analysis and your approaching is magnificent and different than all the others. Plus, your analysis too. I felt in love with your videos. I'm gonna dig all your stuff as of today. Thank you. Hope you will keep your style
Dude... Just WOW! Suscribed
Not even 5 minutes in, and already I have to comment this: Brilliant. As always.
Dark,passionate,beautifully intense
