- Another Breja ToneWorks DIY video - this time we'll go over rewiring your 5-Way standard switch to change position #2 to AutoSplit so that your Humbucker is split into a Single Coil and then combined with your Middle Pickup.
I was under the assumption you had to reverse the neck & middle to ensure proper phase. This method seems more sensible and your videos are a much needed addition to youtube. Great work!
Speaking of proper phases: I've spent so much time trying out different wirings in order to achieve hum-cancelling 2nd position with various pickup combinations. As I settled down with a pair of DiMarzio SDS-1 (with RP/RW middle pickup) and Suhr DSH+, it came down to using black single coils' wires as hot instead of whites so the middle RP/RW one works properly with the humbucker's north coil. Ironically, the DSH+ also has black wire as hot output (similar to Seymour, I believe) so it doesn't even look confusing on the switch.
keep up the good work Don. I nominate you for the best informative youtube electric guitar tone award. cheers!
+keithsa41 lol. Thanks. Happy Modding.
+ Breja ToneWorks I followed the rewiriring scheme and I got the tone that I was looking. Great job and thanks for share your knowledge with us.
You can have still have a Master Tone, if you solder it to the "To Output/Vol" (left bottom one) instead of one particular pickup. Just heard about it, makes life much easier!
Very helpful! Thanks for the explanation, I think there is no way to explain this better.
Hello, this may sound odd but you solved a big problem for me with this video.I have been chasing for years a solution for the huge volume differences between positions 2 and 4 and now everything is solved!thanks thanks thanks
do you have a diagram like HSS/
Autosplit with just 1 volume, 1 tone? Thanks! Love from Philippines.. 😍
short - understandable - well spoken. Great, thanks.
This is an amazing video and so simple to understand. Thank you so much. 🙏
I have a HSS configuration with one volume control and one tone. Can I use this mod and share a master tone with all three pickups? thanks for the video!
Figured it out. It’s because my middle pickup is rwrp. Never even thought of that. Hope that helps others
Hi…I’m loving your videos. They’re very informative and solved most of my current problems.
I have a question. I have a Squier SSS, 1 vol 2 tones. I have purchased Seymour Duncan hot rails in neck and bridge positions. Can you help me with a wiring diagram to install the hot rails in neck and bridge in the Squier leaving the middle pup the same? I have tried but with out of phase issues….
This is great -thank you. The title if the video mentions HSH but is not covered in the video. In HSH configuration, if you wanted to auto split in position 4, would you attach the red/white wires from the neck humbucker to B4? If not, is this possible and how would you do it please?
Hi, Great video! Just one question, at 1:23 , I see that there is a tone connected to middle, and another tone connected to neck. I am wondering how these two tones don't conflict when in position 4 where both the middle and neck are active? I am very new to this, so I am sorry if this is a stupid question. Thank you!
Thanks a lot! Could you please do a vid on a HSS wiring with position 2 being humbucker in parallel?
Thanks for the insight do I add the split coil wires for the neck pickup to the B4?
Another great video presentation!
Hello, do you have any diagram with this configuration? : 2 humbucker 2 volume 1 tone 5 lever switch,,,. Can they be converted to single coils without push pull or mini switches?
Great videos...but i checked your site. Do you have a video that shows how to wire a 5 way switch for a Nashville Telecaster with a HB at the neck, middle single and bridge single? I cant find anything for a tele. thanks for the great info!
I have an HSS (auto split mod position #2) with the tone knob closest to the volume assigned to both the neck and middle pickups. The bridge pickup gets its own tone knob-the one closest to output jack.
I don’t want to misquote you. I was understanding you saying you can’t have two pickups and one tone knob with an HSS autosplit mod/position #2, but actually you CAN. I have an HSS with that mod and specifics. Or were you saying that with your particular preference or for the purposes of your diagram, you can’t have two pickups and one tone knob with your your particular diagram?
On the HSS AutoSplit, I understand how to do it, but I don't understand why it works.
As far as I can see, in position 1, both A1 (the split humbucker) and B-2 (the full humbucker) are connected. Why does that result in output from the full humbucker? Why doesn't it mean that 2 of the coils are connected to each other and short out, leaving only the other coil active?
If having 2 of the coils connected to each other doesn't cause a short but just activates 1 of the coils twice, so to speak, and therefore that connection is irrelevant, then why does position 2 - where it looks like both A-1 and A-2 (the split humbucker and the middle) and B-2 and B-3 (the full humbucker and the ground) are all connected - result in output only from the split humbucker and the middle, but the full humbucker is not active?
This configuration is the one that comes on Ibanez guitars!
It is, but they also utilize a few different specialty 5-way switches to accomplish this. Not all import style, in-line 5 way switches are the same, Ibanez's switches have different model numbers on them, and that number determines how the traces are wired internally to control the functionality of the switch.
How would this work for an ibanez rg with 2 humbuckers and split, 1 vol, 1 tone, 5 way blade
Probably no one will answer this, but if I want to have the outer coil with the missile, do I switch my pickup around or do I swap the coil split with the hot
Thank you!
And to also split the neck pickup on a HSH guitar, so that in position 4 you have the middle and half the neck pickups?
I want to use a humbucker in the neck to. Where do i solder the red/white wire from the neck volume to?
What would happen in position 4 here (neck + middle) with the tone pots? They are shared? I mean, you're connecting Middle hot with Neck hot, thus also connecting Tone1 to Tone 2. And another thing, in position 2, how would the "Tone 1" pot affect the bridge pickup?
Late reply, but someone might find this useful. What happens to the tone pots on your traditional strat in positions 2 and 4? In position 2, the (middle) tone pot affects both pickups. In position 4 both tone pots affect both (middle and neck) pickups the same. I had a strat for more than 10 years and i just realized this, thanks to you.
If you did this exact wiring with the tone knobs controlling the neck and bridge independently are you able to use a 500k tone pot for the humbucker and a 250k tone pot for the neck single coil?
Thanks for the new vid Don, great info
Thanks Jim...
Your videos are always formative for me, hobby player.
Hi, i have an HSS wiring with 1 volume and 1 tone and 5 way switch. Can i split my humbucker in 2 position without another switch, or push pull pot? The pot are better 250K or 500K?
Thank you.
If I want to do the same thing for both humbuckers should should the neck split be in B1 ?
I understand how the second position engages b2 (the coil split) but position three is still in contact with b2 so surely you have the same combination? I don’t understand how this can work?
Hi.....My Strat has 1 Master Tone and 1 Master Volume.....is possible to apply this wiring? Greetings from Italy
Hi, I'm doing an HSH setup with a 5 way and push pull to split the humbuckers.1 Master volume.1 Master tone. I want the tone control to be the push pull.( Out of the way) When up both are single coils.( Straty) Down both humbuckers. 5 way remains a standard 5 way. Basic but I'm having a hard time finding this configuration.
me again. Now I understand the connection of the white and red cables. The red and white wires are supposed to be the connection between the outgoing wire of the outside coil, and the incoming wire of the inside coil, is that right?...so in position 4, the outside coil will sound along with the middle pickup ; not the inside coil. I say this because in the drawing where you show the pickups, you say that the inside coil will sound together with the middle pickup...I understand that the outside coil will sound together with the middle pickup
Really nice content right there
Why does this mod mixes the inner coil instead the outter? Is it how it normally works? What could you do to use the outside coil instead?
Hi Don, I have a Fender Am. Special Strat. On this guitar the second tone pot is wired to the bridge pu. Will it require any additional wiring mods to keep it this way when doing the auto split mod? I'm dropping in a Seymour Duncan Little 59. Thanks!
Hi, I have a humbucker with only 3 wires, red white and ground, can I use a diagram like at 01:20 for my humbucker..? white to A1 and red to B2..
If I want the outer coil what I have to do?
Thanks, how could I split 3 mini humbuckers (Hot rails) in positions 2 and 4 thanks!
This is the question I have as well, I know these videos are old but I wish he would respond to some of the questions. He seems to know more about wiring than anyone else on UA-cam.
@@johnnyh64 I managed to split all pickups in all positions, not only in positions 2 & 4, with a push/push pot (can be push/pull). I think spplitting only in 2 & 4 would be achievable with a super switch but it seems too complicated.
@@GerryBlue Thank you for replying. I was thinking I could do the same with 3 push pulls which I think I could figure out the wiring for that setup but to get all 3 pickups set to single coil based on one push pull, I’m not so sure how to wire. Do you have any schematic or video that you followed?
@@johnnyh64 Sure, here's a link, just be aware that this image calls for the middle pickup soldered in reverse, but if you have three Hot Rails, like I do, that will lower the volume in positions 2 & 4 a lot, so wire them all like Neck and Bridge. www.seymourduncan.com/blog/latest-updates/how-to-get-two-strats-in-one
@@GerryBlue Thank you so much Gerry! It was hard for me to find but I did find this as well so I’ll post it here for others if they need it; d2emr0qhzqfj88.cloudfront.net/s3fs-public/diagrams/3h5w1pptsplitall_1pptaddb_0.pdf. I really appreciate you taking the time!!
Quick question. I have an hsh guitar and I’m going to put a single coil-sized humbucker (fast track 2) in the middle position. My guitar currently comes with this wiring (the one in the video) but I would like to make it also split the middle pickup when in positions 2 and 4. What would I need to modify in this diagram to do so (if posible)? Bear in mind that I only have one master volume and one master tone
I used this diagram but now in position 2 it is not hum cancelling. The inner Humbucker works with middle single coil fine but not hum cancelling. How would I fix this?
i think there was mistakes on this wiring. red white wire on lug B2 means on position 1 the humbucker is already splitted. correct me if im wrong
This is great. I managed to split the humbacker however I have volume drop in position 4. Any advise?
Sounds to me like you could have a polarity problem
Could you do a 5-way Super Switch for an HH guitar?
why arent you use B1 as grounding lug instead of B3?
Would this work if i have a 5 way HSH with a blender pot on a strat?
Your vids are very well apreciated, even from Caribbean islands ! Thanks for share. I send you email too.
nanofree01 Thanks... I appreciate the comments and I'm glad people are finding them useful or at least entertaining. Don
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this!
Great mod! I did it to my Charvel Wildcard SSH guitar which has an in-line 5 way (import?) switch. This guitar only has 1 volume pot. Originally I was going to put in a push-pull pot in order to coil tap the Duncan bridge pup. Can I still do that and keep this cool “auto tapping” switch ability or, is it one or the other?
I'm no expert- I'm learning all this stuff because I need to wire my strat, but I'm just about to do exactly what you described... the auto coil split described here plus a manual split with a pop-up knob. (plus a second pop-up knob to turn neck pickup on at any time- Gilmour mod).
It seems to me that it should work because when you split the coil all you're doing to shut off one of the coils is taking the signal of the red and white wires and sending/shunting it to ground so that it goes nowhere.
So in position 2 it gets sent to ground by the 5-way. If you also send the red and white wires to a toggle it will shunt it to ground when you activate it - regardless of what is going on with the 5-way.
So if you are in any position on the 5-way, operating the pull-up will ground and split the coil regardless... unless it is in position 2 which means that the bridge bucker is shunt whether you like it or not.
I think we can run a wire from the 5-way tab that the red and white are soldered on to our switch.
And the other wire from our switch goes to volume pot to ground it... or to the B3 tab of the 5 way since that is also a ground that goes to the volume pot (assuming that doesn't create some ground loop that can make your guitar buzz... I don't think that is technically a loop though...)
Thank you for your video. I have a Dimarzio humbucker bridge pickup. If red is the hot wire for Dimarzio, what will be the coil splits(red/white) for Dimarzio humbucker? Thanks!
+Universal Liberty Red=Hot Black/White = Coil Splits Green/Bare = Ground
Hi there, i would like to know if you have the complete diagram for the hss autosplit mod? I don't know which tone pot lugs would you connect the 2 tone controls? also, where is the potentiometer factored in here and the ground on b3- where is this connected?
Thanks a bunch

Nice video sir. may i request??
I have 2 humbucker and 5 way switch.say pos 1 is the neck pickup on full humbucker mode.but on 2nd position i want neck pickup on singlecoil mod.3rd both pickup in singlecoil.and 4th is bridge on singlecoil mode.5th bridge full humbucker.
Can you tell me how to wiring it??
Thankss for your reply sir....
I already did this but still sound like gap the middle Pickup with bridge humbucker... Its because my middle pickup is RWRP??!
perfect!! thank you so much
I tried this.. Now The sound between the humbucker and middle still sounds awful and now the position between neck and middle is also now awful sounding. Any idea what I missed?
It makes sense now, I understand.
why red and white are conected to this lug. I know that this work but the reason of this connection, sorry, don´t understand
Hey man, thanks for the video! Im having a problem on the second position! The sound is very weak on this position, the rest works fine but the sound on position two is very weak, using texas special and SD jb on the bridge
+Samprayer2 Sounds like it's out of phase. Try switching the black and green wire on the JB
+Stig Arne Berglund thank you hehe i realizednit on the same day, saw it in a forum and swapped those two wires and it was done, but thanks anyway
How to wire bridge pup too 2nd tone pot only in this setup ????
Is position 2 still hum canceling?
ofc
Don, i have a HSS strat and i want it to have auto-split in position 2 and 1 tone for bridge and 1 tone for middle+neck. Why that is not possible? Will it be possible if I use, for example, a push-pull and forget the auto-split?
The reason is that we're using the other side of the switch to ground the coils splits of the HB leaving no additional lug for the combining of the Neck/Middle for tone control purposes. Yes - you could add another toggle switch but in my opinion controlling it would be a pain. if it were me - I'd move one tone control to the Bridge and the other to the Neck and leave the middle without a tone control.
Ok Don, I got it =) Thanks
If my HB has only 1xhot and 1x ground wire, will i have to convert it to a 4 wire set up ? Or can i just wire the single wire in each case.
In my research in this topic, I found that you cant split a humbucker with 2 wires, it has to have 4 wires.
Thanks!
Can you do this exact same switching setup but with master volume and tone like an ibanez rg setup?
Ashley Hansen Hey Ashley... Yep. Just wire the Vol and Tone like you would for a normal Master Vol/Tone and you're good to go. Don
Man i still can't figure out the wiring on my raptor. it's a hss with a 5 way 1 volume and 1 tone. I wired it but it's buzzing like crazy but the 1st and 5th position don't work and the middle 3 pick up all 3 pickups

Wouldn’t b1 need to go to the output?
Can you make a video about how to make a 2 wire humbucker splitable?? I know that I need to get into the wire that connects the 2 coils but I dont really know how to do it and óbsiously I dont wanna break my pickup. That said, I also dont wanna spend a lot of money on new pickups, I live in a small town in spain and its kinda difficult to get stuff like pickups, pots...
2 wire pickups cant be split
Yes they can.
will this work with blender???
How about with a Duncan 59 Bridge one wire pickup any suggestions
+Mark Anthony You mean a single braided wire HB? Very limited in what you can do with that.
+Breja ToneWorks yes one braided it also has one extra blk wire looks like for coil split
hai thanks for video,.
the standard switch comes attached to guitar im building a guitar if i had a american fender i would just play it the "import" switch comes seprate all i need is a diagram not a conversion chart
will this work with 1 tone and 1 volume?
+RickInTheBackseat Yes
But only tone control on 1 pickup or still 2?
Vision Guitars mine has one on the neck pick-up, but i think you can jump it to work with 2, +Breja ToneWorks knows best
Hi Don,
I am planning to built a HSH super strat and would like to wire it like this
ua-cam.com/video/RD1BreeMzGA/v-deo.htmlm35s
I did watch a lot of your videos to try to sort it out, but I couldn't. There is some auto spliting in both the humbuckers and different switching going on on that 5-way. Like the middle being the outside coils of the bridge and neck humbuckers. I don't think it is a normal 5-way though.
Master Volume and Master Tone
The positions are:
1- Bridge Humbucker
2- Bridge inside coil and middle
3- Bridge and Neck outside coils
4- Middle and Neck outside coil
5- Neck Humbucker
Then a coil split for both humbuckers in the same push/pull pot and a switch that by-pass everything else but the bridge humbucker and go straight to jack.
Would you help me?
Hi, I've a question. Won't the 1st position be a coil split(outer) only active? not a full humbucker? since the split is hanging open? Thanks.
