There is nothing inherently boring about the sound of the 180 degree engine. It’s actually unique. Most of the negative reaction around the 180 engine is just snobbery fueled by motorcycle reviewers who are probably comparing them subjectively to more powerful platforms as the 180 rarely is used in anything larger than a 650.
Plenty of 180s that sound great, especially with a nice pipe (or slipon) attached imho. However, I do think the 270s sound somewhat leaning in between a 'regular' 180 and a v-twin has its charm for sure. At least to my ears. It's very personal of course.
That was an excellent and enjoyable video on firing order. HD front cylinder fires at 315 and the rear piston at 405 degrees which creates the unique unbalanced sound.
@@Gnerko123 yeah but the sound pattern of 270 degree twins and 90 degree L twins is pretty much the same. Since 360-270= 90 degree offset so the exhaust pulses have the same separation.
for cruiser type bike with 2 cyl engine i think using 360 degree firing order is the best since it sounded very good and cruiser is made to enjoy the road
Firing order makes a huge difference in sound with uneven sequences typically producing the most character. Therefore, in a parallel twin, crankshaft angles in order of unevenness and increasing audio interest are as follows: 360° crank: balanced, similar to a boxer twin sound 180° crank: unbalanced, similar to a thumper sound 270° crank: unbalanced, similar to a 90° V-twin sound (Ducati, Moto Guzzi, Suzuki) 285° crank (KTM): more unbalanced, similar to a 75° V-Twin sound (also KTM) 315° crank (Husqvarna): very unbalanced, similar to a 45° V-twin sound (Harley) I'm not aware of anyone who has produced a 300° crankshaft, but in theory it should slot between the 285° and 315° in "lumpyness" and sound similar to a 60° V-twin (Indian). Sound is subjective of course, so there's something for everyone, but go listen to the 315° crankshaft exhaust note of the Husqvarna Nuda 900 parallel twin. I'll wait. It makes the 270's sound tame.

180° doesn't sound all that great..it basically sounds like a 1 cylinder since the firing interval is so short 360° sounds like a low revving 4 cylinder since.. a typical 4 cylinder is just 2 360° parallel twins spaced 180° from each other 270° HELL YEAH the uneven firing interval is making sound rough and awesome
180° sound more like a single cylinder because 180° are short firing interval, 180° sound are awesome at low rpm and even with stock exhaust but at high rpm 180° sound are worst because loud like a single cylinder 270° sound are worst like a single cylinder because uneven firing interval which different than 180° is making sound are worst, sometimes 270° also can making rough sound as on the V-twin Harley-Davidson 360° sound are awesome and beautiful and sometimes 360° also make rough sound because SOHC or OHV, 360° sound are better than 270° because 360° are smoother than 270°
Yes, similar to a 90* V-twin firing order. 285 crankshaft (KTM) is similar to a 75* V-Twin firing order (also KTM). There was an attempt to mimic the 45* V-twin firing order (Harleys) in a P-twin, but I forget the crank angle used or who did it... Maybe Husqvarna and their 315 crankshaft?
The 360´s weren´t represented well in this video. The Benelli Leoncino 500 has a wonderful sound, almost like the CP3 from Yamaha. It takes the number 1 spot for me, closely followed by 270. 180 is just awful, there is no other way to put it...
from my experience and honest review 180 is pretty decent, 360 sounds normal overall 270 has the beast sound like Ducati and Aprilia.. go remap ecu and install exhaust full system
I'd want a 270 degree crank on a new bike but that 180 degree really brings some nostalgia from growing up on a kfx400
My Laverda was a 270 triple. The motorcycle equivalent of a big American lumpy V8. Loved it. Still miss it.

It sound bad from the video bute IRL? Oh people loves it, including me
It's boring, many people have 180° bikes in my town, everyday i hear it, it's so boring, i want hear 270° crank

And ironically, the firing order is also one of the reason why HD engines doesnt make the same power as the other layouts
The HD also fires 2x adding to the sound
360 definitely sounds the best. That's why I love the old British twins.
The 360° has the best sound because it has the same ignition clearance. 270° second place.
270° is the GOAT
Only if you pretend the 180° doesnt exist.
@@bavarianbanshee180s sound like garbage. Rasp buckets
@@bavarianbanshee180 sounds the worst
The 270 degree has that V8 soundtrack at low RPMs
I think so too
360 very smooth engine power delivery and wonderful sound but less power than 180 and 270 crank
I used to think that Ducati's had V8's in them until a motorbike enthusiast told me it's due to the firing interval that makes them sound like that.
Yep, because 270° inline 2 = half crossplane inline 4 and crossplane inline 4 = half crossplane v8

Love my rebel 250 360° sound with a simple baffle removal it sounded close to a cb400 4 cylinder. When in mid and high rev.
270 is absolute monster

The benelli 300 twin is 360, isnt it
I would love it if Yamaha made a large displacement 270 twin. That sounds with big power would be amazing
I'm with you on that. I love the xsr700 but if it was only a xsr1200...lol
But then we wouldn't need the xsr900...🤷🏻♂️
They do, but not for bikes. The Wolverine 850 and Rmax 1000 are both 27 degree engines.
Isn't the 1200 tenere a 270 twin?
270 is the best. 360 sounds like a boxer. 180 sounds the worst. In person 285 sounds the gnarliest
Benelli 302s got 360 parallel twin engine, try it n feel sweet sound then use Sc project Racing Exhaust ❤️❤️❤️
you missed the best sounding, the Nuda 900r
