The entire movie is a depiction of the quote “most men lead a life of quiet desperation”. Just getting the life crushed out of them one passive aggressive comment at a time until they are an empty shell of a man with no joy left in life.

I wanted to like the movie but they really tried to drive home the left perspective. Men can't be men and if you have an opinion of free speech, you might as well not have one and just let go and get beat down. Not okay and not a good message to any father.

Bill Burr’s wife in this movie, Leah, is an absolute nightmare. I was rooting for divorce. She sided with everyone except her husband throughout the entire movie. There was no chemistry between them, but I could certainly feel the hate brewing.

I’m 45 and from Massachusetts. I identify so well with Bill Burr and his comedy. Brought up tough as a kid, low tolerance for BS, stupidity and how sensitive and self absorbed the younger generation is. This movie didn’t navigate towards either generation. It showed the weaknesses and strengths of both and how we can coexist so it’s not that bad at all. It’s not some Oscar nomination but, it’s funny and lot of truth in it and truth hurts but doesn’t make it wrong...and Dr. L is your typical Karen who thinks she has the right to act like an entitled “C You Next Tuesday”...you’ll see in the movie, Bills character was never really wrong in the whole thing.

Bill's character wasn't wrong, and that's why it didn't connect to his audience. His wife blew up and told her friend off, and when Bill confronted her he understood and moved on. Even considering the fact he lost his friend in the process. It would've been nice to see a supportive wife, but I only seen a hypocrite. Oh, and on the ride home in the cab, when he had the revelation, how he will end up if he wasn't able to control his anger was weak. Considering that he became famous off shitting on others and ranting remarkably. Bill played it safe in a time where we needed brutal honesty

As a HUGE Bill Burr fan, I went into this with low expectations since this is his first directing gig, but I knew he was getting better at acting (his second appearance in The Mandalorian was phenominal) but I thoroughly enjoyed it. A lot of it was a mix of his standup bits mixed with F is for Family, so I knew where certain things were going...but I still got a kick out of it.
Loved when they were in the strip club and you could hear "okay boomer!" in that distinctive voice that we all know is his wife Nia hahah I've only heard her voice and saw her in pictures, so I didn't even recognize her right away towards the end when she played the nurse!

That's not right either and I personally don't blame him for being pissed off about how he was treated for a first time offense. Granted, the outburst was more than what was required in that situation, so there is fault on his end. However, she was also incredibly condescending and clearly got off on it. Furthermore, when he man's up to apologize. she AGAIN publicly humiliates him with that ridiculous village apology. I actually enjoyed this movie better than I thought! I used to listen to Bill’s Monday Morning Podcast pretty religiously years ago. And a lot of his stories are pretty much visualized in the film which can be satisfying cause it’s like an inside joke within a joke, I guess? Also, I know Joseph loves Patrice O’Neal and I have a theory that Bokeem Woodbine was a version of Patrice when we first met him. He was cool, calm collected and seemed to have figured out how to keep his life copacetic. Patrice would totally be that guy to have his ex and his new girl being good friends, and sit back cause his kids are grown 😂. And Bobby Cannavale is probably a version of one of Bill’s good friends, Paul Virzi (who did a cameo- he was the random guy getting beat up at the strip club just for being there). I also like that his wife in real life made an appearance as the nurse in the end. I thought it was cute, some parts weren’t that great but most was very entertaining. I didn’t expect a very deep philosophical film from him but I thought it was a good debut of Bills bio 😂. Thank you for reviewing!!

So glad Nick liked Natural Selection. It was filmed in my small Texas hometown ( Husband and I were extras) Rachael Harris is a lovely person ( she joked about us both being Harris)as are Jon Gries, John Diehl and writer/director Robbie Pickering. They were very professional and very kind. One day after filming they bought ice cream for everyone. They went out of their way to speak to everyone-Pickering came over and sat with my husband and me in the restaurant while waiting to film. He was interested in how we were finding the experience of being on a movie set and wanted to know about life in our town. We really enjoyed being a teeny part of the process and came to appreciate the art of filmmaking- such a collaborative an exacting process. I see where Pickering has gone on to have a successful career screenwriting for tv. My son and I had been on the set of Hope Floats in 1997, but it was a lot less intimate. For that film-I was most excited to see Gena Rowland in the flesh-more than Sandra Bullock or Harry Connick.

The most notable lack of growth where there could have been growth is the wives choosing social clout over their husbands.

It has many parts that are hilarious. The antagonists (the school principal and the men’s new boss) help by being clueless and inept do-gooders.
We both identified with the protagonists (we’re in our 60’s). It really delivered on the fan service for our age group.
There was no deep message. There was just three good guys fighting to be valued in a hostile (and absurd) society they no longer recognize.
The three men do undergo a character arc that leaves them at least partly accepting the new culture. The movie doesn’t vindicate old white guys like I hoped it would, but it doesn’t ridicule them either. I’ll settle for half a win.

It shows how things make plenty of sense old school if you give it deeper thought, then you see the hypocritical points of the new school but why it has a place in this world. Ultimately we need to see that we all need to be more adaptive whether old or new and there is a sweet spot in the middle. I appreciate that as rough Bill Burr is, he was a good father loved his children immensely and learns to get help and go to therapy in the end but still stand in his truth without being a toxic to thy self- people pleaser.

This will be an intriguing review....
I was a fan of Bill Burr's. After a few years of therapy and time, his work doesn't fit me anymore. Skilled comedian, yet he has gender bias and class issues reflected in his stand-up comedy, in my perception. Thanks for watching this movie for me, so I don't have to....

Okay. To follow up. Bill Burr has a podcast platform, All Things Comedy. Jackie Kashian is a multi-decade comedian who deplatformed her podcast from Bill Burr's platform. She stated publicly that gender bias was a main reason she removed her podcast from Bill Burr's platform. At least 2 pro comedians left his platform citing gender bias. These are direct examples.

We need more anti-woke movies to push back against Hollywood, people are sick of the woke cult taking over society the same way religious zealots did in the 80's.

Stand ups should not write and direct their own movies. Bill Burr’s comedic talents do not translate into movies…Old Dads sucked. It follows the painfully unfunny model of having the main character surrounded by over-the-top one-dimensional caricatures for them to riff on. Ricky Gervais has been doing that for years now.

    • @Elwood128

This premise sounds like a very bad, unfunny ripoff of "City Slickers". The 3 male characters are just the same, mid-life crisis and onto a road trip. Bill Burr, like Joe Rogan, has become a shell of the person he used to be.
