You can make the LED light more accessible by going into set and scrolling to "LED LT" Hold the P/DMR key until you hear a beep. Go back to normal operating mode and now every time you hit the P/DMR key, the light will turn on
Hey Frank thank you for your presentation I went and bought me a vx6r you're absolutely right it's a great radio
Every time I watch a review on this radio, I find something ELSE I like about it to motivate me into buying one as my first rig. I test for my Tech in a week and a half. I did not know about those mods. Very interesting. When the GMRS license is dropped to $35, I will get one. I had heard about the SignalStick but didn't know it was available in BNC. Also, there is a CW practice mode which interests me. THANKS for the review!
Thanks and 73 good review. I just ordered one!!!
I really like this radio. I am a new ham but have multiple hts and this is the ultimate hiking all weather ht imo! I have a super elastic ss also! Great combo.
Greetings from Utah. I’m going to get my technician’s license. Terrific video, thanks.
Well done video sir!
Hey Frank hello from Atlanta Georgia I still have my vehicle 6r it's 2 years old now and it's still serving me the best in the rain snow yeah I'm telling you this is a great rugged radio I have the case for it so it's still mint condition and I have the underwater microphone you can submerge 3 ft under the water it's just a greedy antenna and a 220 band works great I have the diamond for that thank you for turning me on to the vx6r I'll never forget you you've been a real friend on UA-cam
Nice
Watching this video helped me decide to buy this radio and Signalstick antenna. I also got the mod done on the radio. This is the best dam radio ever. Mine is now over a year old and still no complaints. I also recommend getting the Ed Fong Roll Up Jpole Antenna and an extra battery. That’s what I take with me when I venture out into the backcountry.
Gotta try that antenna !
Nice review!
A Frank since you made this video I still have mine and it runs great the best investment I ever made 👍
great review, thanks!!!
This radio has so many features
Great video. I think you just changed my mind on my next radio.
Thanks Justin, that's truly the best compliment I could ask for. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
Do you have to worry about the battery on this radio? Meaning does it damage the battery if you leave it on the charger too long or charge it too frequently?
I've actually been very impressed with the battery on mine. As mentioned, I've had mine since September of 2008. (I had to look it up) Over that time, I have never been very careful with how long it charges or how many times. While I'm not a battery expert, I've actually heard that charging a battery regularly will actually improve it's ability to hold a charge for longer. So to this day, I'm still using the same battery that it came with. And while it's not quite as long lasting as it once was, It will still last the whole day. My fear is that it will fail when I need it most and for that reason, I should probably get a new one. - Thanks again for your comment.
I bought an FT-4 for my MARS Operation. It is a very simple keystroke mod that does NOT require monkeying with the inside of the radio. I own a VX-6 which I like very much, and a VX-8 which I absolutely LOVE! For mobile ops, I have an FTM 200 and an FT-891.
Really nice review and presentation. I believe you mean transmit not broadcast as you mention often in the video. Broadcast is what AM FM and shortwave stations do - a one way communication station. It isn’t legal for amateur radio operators to broadcast on amateur radio bands, you have to have someone to talk to.
I was gifted one of these a couple of years ago and shamefully I have left it in its box as I found it a little difficult to get round the menu system. I have recently decided to resurrect the use of this radio instead of relying on the cheaper chinese versions which I am used to. I have been playing with the VX-6 and note that it has already been wide banded for use on other bands so this is one mod I will not have to change. One thing that I note coming up time and time again is how to delete a single MEM channel from the radio manually as there is nothing to cover this in the instruction manual. After many hours of messing around, resetting the radio and learning how to programme manually, I think I have found the answer, well in the European version anyway.
If you already know this then please accept my apologies, but there are likely readers and visitors to your channel and other VX6 channels who might find it useful:
Mem mode: Press FW key and hold for about a second (mem numbers start to flash)
Using the Selector knob, turn until the channel number you want to delete is shown
Press the TX/PO button and this will clear the individual memory.
The VX-6 is fast becoming my goto handset and I would just like to thank you for sharing your information.
I've just bought mine :)
First off thank you for such an awesome video, I got mine for disaster prep and for backpacking and hiking. I just got mine and am studying for my license. Mine has the MARS mod so I'm wondering can I do the FRS/GMRS mod to a radio that has the MARS mod done to it? And secondly have you after time noticed any detriment to performance in relation to the mod?
great radio , I own two of them.
I love mine. I've often thought about getting another one for my family. And being such a well thought out, rugged rig, it's hard to go wrong.
Thanks for your comment Rohn!
I had the same problem as the post below as far as trying to delete a memory channel after making a mistake and saving it to memory. The procedure you describe does appear to delete the memory channel but does not delete it.
What you described is called "Masking" and is shown in the owners manual on page 38. The frequency is masked
but is still retained in the radio and can be brought back by performing the procedure a second time. I also was going
crazy trying to delete a memory channel. After masking you can save a new frequency on the masked channel and
it will be overwritten removing the frequency that you wanted to get rid of in the first place and retaining your new
frequency.
Thanks for smooth video. I have had the VX-5 for maybe 20 years and now getting back to it. Is there any reason to update/replace it?
Year 2020 version. Yaesu changed the circuit board. Now there is no resistor that a person can remove to change the TX band limits. Yes this is unfortunate. I don't think the TX band limits can be changed unless there is a secret soft modification available which I do not have.
Also, do the signal stick compromises the Waterproof rating?
Is there any instruction on how to make this Vx-6R to work with GMRS ? Thx
Oooooooooh I see a quality radio AND a VP9.
You've got good taste. I don't own any radios but wanted to get into it. Exactly who would you be trying to communicate with? Just curious how and who you would be setting up comms with
Hello. Is the vx 6r good on wideband receive. Thanks. Ron. Z. Pgh. Pa.
Can you program this cable with a USB cable and a program? Thanks!
where did you buy it, is ebay a good source? how does this radio compare to VX-6E or vx-7r?
Hello,
How to mod it? Can you please let me know? Thank you!
can it be programmed this model to 30.000-88.000 frequencies??
Thank you for your video. Did you have to use a gasket/o-ring under the signal stick to preserve it's submersible rating? If so what are its dimensions CERT type activities and needed something water proof. I just recieved my VX-6R a couple of hours ago and hopefully my Technician license in a couple of days.
I know your comment is 2 years old now, but I’m guessing if the rubber duck antenna did not have a gasket/o-ring, then the radio doesn’t need one in order to be waterproof.
Should i buy this radio or the vx 7? Can't decide
Does the receive SSB on shortwave?
is it true that these radios have a known problem with No batt error ?
I have the LED light programmed to the DMR button so all you have to do is press it and the light comes on / off
But the antenna doesn't support 1.25cm? Do you have any issue using the Antenna on 1.25cm?
I just bought a vx-6r and have no experience with ham radio's. where should I begin to learn how to use a ham radio? I got it just for emergencies but it won't help if I don't know how to use it. als the function were you can communicate with some other push to talk radio's sounds very interesting.
Sorry for the delay Stephen. As summer is here, I've been pulled away and had a hard time keeping things going. A couple links that I found helpful when getting started. If you haven't taken your technician license it's really pretty easy and just involves becoming familiar with the questions. Check out this link to take some practice tests. www.qrz.com/hamtest/ and then look around online for a location near you that offers the tests. A friend of mine studied the day of and passed. Again, not terribly difficult. As for the mods, there are a couple of videos and tutorials out there and I believe if you find one for the VX7r it's the same. I would double check that. Just keep in mind that when you do it, you do so at your own risk but I've really like the results of having it on mine. Hope that helps.
Could you please also send antenna link to me? TIA
does this antenna affect the water proofing of the radio?
The short answer is I don't know. But I can tell you what I did to the antenna and to my radio to improve the waterproofing. I added additional heat-shrink tubing to the metal connector on the antenna. When in place, the tubing shrunk around the end slightly. Then on the radio, I added a rubber washer that fit snug around the connector with an outside diameter of the washer just slightly smaller than the rubber housing that surrounds the connector. I pushed it all the way down. Now, when I attach the antenna, the heat-shrink and the rubber washer can be tightened down together creating a pretty tight seal. Now, that said, I'm not sure how excited I would be about letting it sit for any amount of time underwater but I think it would hold up pretty good short term. Hope that helps.
Thanks for watching!
Trig Tac Toe what makes the stock antenna more waterproof?
Hello, thank you for the video. I'm thinking about purchasing one of these. I was wondering how old is your vx6r? This video was posted in 2016 so I'm assuming the radio was purchased at that time. Question: Did you mod it yourself? And have you heard of newer models not having the solder "blob" jumper to prevent the mod?
I've found and taken care of my questions.
Great what. Was the answer to your question?? Please sir ..
What is the antenna?? 4S7JL
Is it made in Japan?
Excellent content! I appreciate the thoroughness of your presentation. I just noticed the date on your original post for this. I wish I had found you sooner when I was struggling last year after purchasing as a new ham. Anyone looking can find the owners manual online @ www.manualslib.com/manual/339785/Yaesu-Vx-6r.html.
You can’t broadcast on the ham bands, but you can transmit.
US operators need to understand that transmitting on FRS on this radio is not legal.
FRS and GMRS aren't legal on that radio either. You may want to let other people know that they will be breaking the law like you are...
@Tammy Gueterman That's entirely regional. RF pollution is a real thing and actual hams shouldn't be promoting it by working out of ham bands with ham equipment. The goal is to have effective communications without affecting the communications of others. Justifying this is the antithesis of the spirit AND letter of the law.
@Tammy Gueterman With the advent of cheap Chinese radios in every preppers pack it's become a problem in many areas. Again, there is a reason why these rules are in place and it's not to make you feel bad about breaking them. It's about maintaining an environment free from as much interference as possible. You either get that or you don't.
The price is really fraudulent! Be careful how you advertise these or you may be charged as well!
