    I'm thinking about getting one of these for my SP& since the Philips one I use always makes the monitor screen flicker when I touch it. But when I google about I saw some people raise issues about the heat on the connector. What's your experience with the Dock 2 so far?

    Does the screen flicker when you connect two monitors? And by flicker I mean only during the connection is being established, I expect it to not flicker once connection is established.

    Hello @oztabletpc, I just ordered a Surface Pro 7 for my office along with a Surface Dock 2 - thank you for this unboxing! I'm looking at monitors now and wondering if this setup will allow me to run 3 external monitors (in addition to the SP7 screen itself). I saw another video of yours where you did something similar. I was thinking I could USB-C from the dock to one monitor, and USB-C from the Dock to the other two monitors using a daisy chain. Would that work??? I've researched everywhere but can't find someone who can answer this question. Thanks in advance!

    • @oztabletpc
      @oztabletpc  3 роки тому

      It's certainly achievable, and there would be a number of ways to do it. On my Surface Pro 3 I used a USB-A dock to get 3 screens going as well as my Surface (4 in total). I'm unsure of the best way to achieve it with the latest tech though, as I have not tried in a long time. You would need Display Port MST daisy chain capable monitors to do it the way you've suggested. I've never tried that. I also haven't tried plugging in a display to the Surface USB-C port while docked too. It would be interesting to see how it works out. Have you tried searching through Surface on Reddit?

    Hi, I just bought a Surface book 3, and I have a dell wd15 dock which i use work my work computer (dell latitude 5490). The wd15 dock does work with my surface book 3 via usb c, however it is not as smooth as i would like. When I plug it, only 50% of the time charges my laptop, i have to unplug and plug it in until it starts charging. The other thing is that the wd15 dock is connected via hdmi to my monitor, and when i plug the dock into my surface book,, the external monitor is not detected. i have to unplug the hdmi from the wd15 and plug it in again, and it works. So i have to do all these to have the dock charge and provide connection to my monitor. Am i missing something here? like a driver or something? Or is this expected since the dock is DELL and my laptop is MICROSOFT?

    • @oztabletpc
      @oztabletpc  3 роки тому

      I don't know for sure as I have never tried the Dell dock. But the first thing I would check is the cables. Unfortunately not all USB-C cables are capable of doing the job. However, I'd assume that the cable that came with the dock (if there was one) is up to spec. Another thing to try is moving away from HDMI to Mini Display Port / Display Port if you can, you might find it more reliable. Best places to go for support would be the Microsoft Support forum (listen to Barb Bowman if she responds to you!). And also, you could try Reddit as there is an active support community there.

    Excellent video. My office uses a combination of Surface and non Surface devices. Some of the Surface devices do not support USB-C. Can I hook everything (monitors, mouse, keyboard, Ethernet) to a separate usb-c hub, then either:
    1) for USB-C compatible devices: connect the usb-c hub directly to the device
    2) for non-USB-C compatible Surface devices, connect the USB-C hub to the Dock 2 to the Surface? (Essentially nothing is attached to the surface dock except for one USB-C connection, the Dock 2 essentially functions as a surface connect to USB-C adapter)

    Thanks for another useful video. I like the Surface Travel hub because it replaces three adaptors that I needed to carry when travelling with my earlier surface devices - VGA, HDMI and ethernet. There certainly have been plenty of occasions when I needed to revert to VGA to connect to an older projector, so the new travel hub is very handy. And it took me a while to figure out the USB-C storage hole as well. Turns out reading the little instruction sheet was worthwhile after all.
    I have not moved up to the dock 2 yet since the older dock 1 is doing fine at present.

      I've had similar issues, and while I can't vouch that the underlying issue is the same, for me factory resetting my Surface seemed to solve the problem, at least it hasn't happened since. I know it sounds like an extreme measure (and I hope you do regular backups so it's not too much trouble to get all your stuff off the device before resetting it) but my best guess was that at some point there must have been a faulty windows update or a hiccup in the drivers that just sometimes disconnected the pen from the bluetooth connection.
      If you have a chance to try the pen on a different Surface device (maybe a friend or colleague could lend you theirs for a bit) then you could determine if it's even a problem with the pen: if it works on other devices, then your Surface is the problem, either software or hardware related. If it doesn't, then you should RMA the pen, without any user-serviceable parts I think there's not much you could do yourself (at least not easily) if that were the case.
      Those are just my personal experiences from unfortunately having quite a few faults with my own devices; while it's not fun, I'd still recommend going directly to customer support because, again only in my personal experience, they're fairly forthcoming with offering to repair or replace items still in warranty. Either way, best of luck and I hope you get it working again

    In my case, would using the USB-C dock would serve the same purpose as the surface dock 2?

    Or would purchasing the surface dock 2 be beneficial when considering performance?

    • @oztabletpc
      @oztabletpc  4 роки тому

      It's much the same. The Dock 2 would charge a bit faster. There is probably a performance benefit too. And if my past experience with DisplayLink docks is anything to go by it will be much more stable.

      If you Need to have the connections all the time at home (for example you always use a mouse, keyboard, monitor and stuff at home) I would youse the Dock instead of the dongle. For now I have a similar dongle (not from Microsoft tho) and it does what you need it to do, but it "hangs" at my surface all the time and the desk looks cluttered. In addition to that I need to have the power adapter connected as well, which doesn't look good. If you need the connections on the go, or if you switch between two places often, then you might want to get the dongle. If you need the functionality only at home, you should get the Dock. It is expensice, but I am pretty sure that I will get that soon :)

    • @gyozakeynsianism
      @gyozakeynsianism 4 роки тому

      The Surface Dock 2 is for your home or work desktop setup. It plugs into the Surface device using Surface Connect, not USB-C. It needs to be plugged into mains power.
      The USB-C dock isn't really a dock. It's a USB-C hub and video-out dongle. It's for portable use. It does not require mains power - it is powered by the Windows device.

    I hope this doesn't sound like a rude "umm, actually..." but the Surface Dock 2 is not compatible (at least according to Microsoft's US store page) with the Surface Pro 4. And just as an (I think important) note, only the most recent devices - Pro 7, Pro X, Go 2, Book 3 and Laptop 3 - support higher than 30Hz refresh rate for external monitors. Not really a huge issue, but especially for people or companies working on video editing that might be an important point to consider.

    We still use our OG Surface Dock and thanks to several firmware updates over the years, it's gone from pretty unstable to quite good and perfectly usable with our Surface Laptop 3 and Surface Pro 7. The old Dock is 100% reliable with the Surface Laptop 3 and mostly reliable with the Surface Pro 7. (No idea why there's a difference.) We do not need 4K, let alone 4K60, so we're sticking with the old Dock rather than the US$200+upgrade this new one would imply.
    Also, a note about Surface Connect: I strongly prefer the low-friction magnetic connection of the Surface Connect over USB-C connections for docks. I've had ports fail on me from repeated use - but never a Surface Connect port!

    I'm interested in the Microsoft USB-C Travel Hub to connect my Surface Pro 7 to an UHD 4K TV, through the HDMI port. It has 4 other ports that might be needed in the future.
    The Surface Dock 2 is too expensive and, for the moment, I don't need it.
    As I am in Portugal, Europe, I see mainly on sale the USB-C Travel Hub with the part number SWV-00003, but there are some on eBay with the part number SWV-00001 and others with SWV-00005.
    Now I'm confused with all these different part numbers.
    I wonder if there are different part numbers because they might have different protocols due to different regions of the world.
    Or if just the SWV-00001 is an older version and SWV-00005 is newer. But it looks like all of them are model 1941.

    Would have liked to see the docks actually plugged into a Surface or Surface Go. Anybody can unbox, but actually installing and using it is many times where the problems come in. Note to self...Attaching all this to the Surface kinda' takes the portable usefulness out of the device you bought to be taken to the field. Might as well buy a 2-in-1 and just have a keyboard dock which comes with all the necessary connector ports.

      And the idea of a dock is grab and go. Much work is done at the desk. Much work is not done at the desk. Surface does both.

      Yeah, no. You don't need any adapters. I plug directly into my LG wide-screen with a single USB-C - Charge, USB hub and display... No dongle required. Industry standard connection. These are all optional.

      Surface devices and docks have never had HDMI. They've always done Mini-Display Port and now USB-C. There are as you mention dongles though. The travel dock has HDMI.

      @@oztabletpc It's just disappointing because it's around $200 and it's supposed to be THE dock that does it all. There are probably Type C to HDMI cables out there but it would've been so much better if it had the standard one. The travel dock isn't for me since there are cheaper alternatives with more ports. Thanks for the response.

      DisplayPort over USB-C should eventually replace HDMI. It would take many years though. Much better since you can get PD charging, peripherals and display all over the same cable...

    Honestly The Surface Dock 2 being $400 CAD Is hard to justify i mean c'mon at least support Thunderbold connection with that Dock 😒 Still it is Type-C 60Hz I guess ? with Thunderbold you could in theory connect EGPU for more intensive games. but eh Guess i'll use my Surface Pro 7 to Stream games with Xbox Game Pass, or PSNow, or even Google Stadia?

    The Surface Dock is ok for a desktop, but it's totally crap for travelling. It weighs a ton and takes up a load of space in your carry on. I'm disappointed with Microsoft products these days

    • @oztabletpc
      @oztabletpc  4 роки тому

      The dock is absolutely NOT designed for travelling! It's loaded with extra weight to make it sit on your desk. Try the "Travel Hub " or something like it instead.
