    Also me doing research: "Apparently it's chock-full and chock is a wedge/block to balance something and make it motionless. So if a room is chock-full, then no motion can take place inside it hence why we use it."

    I always thought that the whole saga with Daria, Tom, and Jane was something that humanized Daria which was so needed for her character. She wasn’t a mouthpiece or the only voice of reason; she was a teenager who made an impulsive decision and had to face the fallout from it.
    Also I fully agree that Tom needed more time to stand on his own instead of being part of an attached set to Daria and/or Jane. He got introduced rather late in the show and really didn’t get his own time to develop which is a real shame since he bounced off of Daria and Jane so well. I think he should have been a transfer student into Lawndale instead of a private school like Ted.

      Kind of makes the fact that Daria broke up with him in the series finale "Is it College Yet?" all the more sad. I think this goes along with what Shady was saying in his "Arts and Crass" review, that Daria has such a negative outlook on things that she's willing to completely give up opportunities, in this case that includes relationships.

    • @KairuHakubi
      @KairuHakubi 3 години тому

      he's more or less fine. it's the dumb ways Daria acts around him that make you dread his arrival. Particularly once they became official, she turned into every stereotype of an irrational girlfriend. And for some reason she never seems to pick up on that and change. People rag on her a lot but I think that's really her only flaw. She gets accused of being 'mean' or even 'bullying' because everything today is totally pants on head, but nobody she snarks at is intelligent enough to understand the insult, so no damage done.

    • @NeedlessExposition
      @NeedlessExposition 16 хвилин тому

      All he really needed was to have more focus on him without Daria or Jane around. If characters like Kevin and Sandi could have their moments in the limelight, why not Tom? It sounds like the writers were so focused on the Daria and Jane conflict that they forgot Tom needed some attention.

  • @KyleRayner12

    Jane showing up to take pictures reminds me of an actual thing that happened when I was in college. Once a year, we had a concert on campus. Pretty much everything else was closed that day, and it was never on a day with classes. The vast majority of students would show up and get wasted on both alcohol and whatever drugs they could score. As someone who hates crowds and loud noises, I (and most of my friends) would usually come up with ways to avoid it, but since it was 30 feet from my dorm, that meant getting up early and finding somewhere to hide.
    One year, I actually went out of curiosity/desire to find food with everything else closed, and ran into a friend of mine who was really into writing his own music and creating art of all kinds. He'd noticed that pretty much every school club, department, etc. had their own shirt for the event, so he was surreptitiously taking photos of as many shirt backs as he could to make a photo collage. It was actually really fun helping him find designs he hadn't snapped yet and talking about the project (although I fled as soon as the music got too loud).

    As someone in high school the same time as when Daria aired, Jodi's racial identity was topical. A lot of black kids, especially like Jodi, struggled a lot. Our parents grew up in the Civil Rights era and instilled to work 200% harder. If you exhibited any sort of intellect, you were showcased like a museum exhibit but in a patronizing way. It made sense and was relatable to us back then.

    Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if Jodie and Mack were voted King and Queen constantly by merit alone. Their both very social, very friendly in a genuine way, do a lot for their school via sports or volunteering and are considered good looking by a number of characters. I'm not saying race isn't a factor, but they seem like shoe ins either way.

    • @KairuHakubi
      @KairuHakubi 3 години тому +1

      Plus, after the first time, you kinda had to keep doing it, or you'd look like you were yanking it away. Much like a lot of social movements, there's no exit strategy because change automatically makes you look opposed to the thing.

    • @NeedlessExposition
      @NeedlessExposition 6 хвилин тому

      It could be likely that it’s only Jodie who sees it as a race factor because of how pushy and assertive her parents are in trying to outdo her white peers. She seems to be very popular if not the most popular student in the entire school, able to mix in with every social hierarchy with no problem. I can easily believe that Jodie would be homecoming queen simply because of her popularity alone since she’s a nice person who tries to be diplomatic and respectful but not a doormat (except to her parents until the end).

    Also, introvert, 90s kid, public school. Same for me at my school you knew about homecoming for easily 2 whole months prior to it happening. Normally starting with posters everywhere than the last couple weeks constant announcements. And our school had announcements even between classes (Not always but it wasn't uncommon to see anywhere from 2 a day to 1 every other day) Letting you know up coming stuff from a simple book fair, to yes, homecoming. Always felt like it was more for the teachers or sports team cause out of maybe 500 people at my high school never more than 50 people went but we also had our own little get together around the same time also among clicks so for me and my nerdy friends we didn't go to home coming, but we still hung out, ate pizza, listened to music, game, so on but what ever each group of friends found fun pretty much was what we did on our own around that time.

    It's actually "Chock-full"
    "c.1400, chokkeful “crammed full,” possibly from choke “cheek” (see cheek (n.)). Or it may be from Old French choquier “collide, crash, hit” [similar to shock]." Middle English chokkeful already had the same meaning as modern chock-full. Both this word and choke “to strangle” likely derive ultimately from Old English words meaning “jaw, cheek.” The end result is the same: a mouthful.

    13:15 older dude here, I can comment on that. in the 80s and 90s, racism existed, sure, but was almost dead. Ironically, with the rise of DEI, BLM, etc, starting I'd say around 2008 or early 2010s, I've never seen so much racism in my life. Turns out the more something is shoved down your throat, the more people grow to resent it.

      Lol, racism was almost dead. Tell that to the losers saying Michelle Obama used to be a man or comparing Barack Obama to a monkey. As for BLM, your kind reacted the same way to the civil rights movement. "They're too violent!" "They're all Communists!" "We're being replaced!" What's being shoved down your throat is human rights, and you're too chickenshit to admit you hate us for our freedoms. It must suck to be forced to live like your parents did-forever. 🤣🖕🇺🇲

    • @christianjohnson5379
      @christianjohnson5379 3 години тому +1

      It's primarily because of the implications. Not only is racism not nearly as big of a problem like it used to be, but even if the messages of being against racism are good, they are applied in a way that's meant to virtue signal, specifically they're often using it to paint a nasty picture of conservatives, republicans, Trump supporters, etc. They imply that it's the nature of conservatives to be racist or Nazis, when that's literally not true. It's the idea that conservative, or any form of right-wing politics is automatically synonymous with racism or bigotry. That's the problem with a lot of woke shows these days, they are trying to divide us.

    "Chock full" is a shortened form of "chock-a-block full"
    The phrase "chock-a-block full" is a combination of two nautical terms:
    Chock: In a nautical context, a chock is a wedge-shaped block of wood or metal used to secure a ship's wheel or other equipment.
    Block: In this context, it refers to a pulley block used in rigging and sailing.
    When two pulley blocks are drawn together so tightly that they are touching, they are said to be "chock-a-block." This nautical term was then extended to mean "completely full" or "packed tightly."
    So, "chock-a-block full" means something is so full that it's packed tightly, like two pulley blocks jammed together.

    Chalk and chock are homophones! They only sound the same but their meanings are completely different.
    Chock is something (usually a block of wood) used to hold things in place by being pressed up against them. (Eg: A wagon wheel can be held in place by a block of wood pressed up on either side of a wagon wheel to keep it from rotating)
    Therefore to be chock full of something is to have a place so tightly packed that nothing can move.

    It's homecoming king and queen, where exactly does 'merit' factor into it?!
    Isn't it entirely a popularity thing and biased?!

    I was always in my own world in high school. I never knew when homecoming or certain games or any of that stuff was going on until it was going on. Or after the fact.
    I just didn't pay attention to that stuff. So I have no problem believing Daria not knowing it was homecoming day whatever.

    Good on you for building up to Dye Dye my Darling, it would definitely feel weird diving into that and not having the context of the developing relationship between Daria and Tom. Not to mention "Psycho Therapy", "Mart of Darkness", and "Fire!" all show the gradual decline of Jane and Tom's relationship. And and like you, I really like Jane as a character....BUT admittedly she's not her best in these episodes, though to her credit she does admit to her mistakes. But it'll be interesting to see what you have to say about these moments.

    14:47 oh hey, look at that. the weird kinda purple guy is walking with the weird kinda orange lady. I guess they gotta stick together.
    I'm not sure the timeline is as odd as you think, I think Daria was waiting around for a lot longer after Helen and Quinn left, and Jake was just taking forever in the bathroom. THEN finishing, THEN realizing he had no TP, then calling out to everyone for a while, before Daria finally walked by the bathroom.

    Chocked, not Chalked, full is based on the idea of stuffing something under another object to prevent it from moving, like putting a wedge under a car tire to stop the tire from rolling.

    Because it was an actual legal policy with implications for college and job applications, Affirmative Action was a semi-common talking point in the 90s. But race in general wasn't since the country was trying to move towards a more color blind society. Except California, especially LA, because they've always been horrible. Ironically it was the election of Obama and him jumping on every case of cops shooting a black man that turned race into an every day issue for Americans. Thanks Obama.

      PS Since you mentioned banished sitcom characters you should talk about Saved By the Bell at some point. There are so many girls who dated Zack for one episode only to be "never seen or heard from again" (to quote the wiki) that there's a fan conspiracy theory about Mr Bell being a yandere serial killer obsessed with being Zack's friend.

    I know what ya mean bout Tom. His trope is nice for one or two stories. As timeless arctypes are, they work best in multistory arcs when fleshed out. I wished for one episode Tom learned something from Daria.
