This is the first head-to-head comparison I’ve done on this channel. Let me know what you guys think of the format, and if I should do more of these. Thanks for watching!
I owned my Steinhart for about 4 years and my dial lumes have not turn yellow. I wear it almost daily and it has tons of scratches but I love it.
It’s a fantastic everyday watch for sure! I think the yellowing lume only happens on the bezel insert, I’ve had this happen on 3 of mine now. The dial lume isn’t affected, I think it’s because it’s not exposed to the elements like the lume on the insert is.
Steinhart all the way. Their quality is unreal and their service is great. I own two...working on a third.
@@WristWatching My absolute fave is an homage to a watch I had back in the late 70s - a Rolex 1655. I got the Steinhart Ocean 39 GMT Special Edition from OLKO and I have a hard time wearing anything else! I also have an Ocean 39 Black Ceramic and I'm going to get an Ocean 39 Adventure Classic. You simply can NOT beat these watches for the money. Hell...for three or four times the money!
If their lume was better, I would definitely consider getting one.
Everything else about them seems top notch.
Hi Harvid. Nice review. Great to see them side-by-side. Looks like they are both good watches for their respective price points.
Thanks a lot, Eric. They really are great pieces. I think I need a break from sub homages after my past few videos. 🤣
Great video. Hard for me to decide, both are very nice watches. For me, I believe I would go with the Sugess. I like the bigger watch head size, however, I do not like male endlinks on any watch. They just needlessly extend the lug width too much. I am a lume nut, so the Sugess gets the nod in that feature. The glide lock clasp on the Sugess is a no brainer. I love the on the fly adjustability. The NH35 movement can be adjusted for better performance, although probably not to COSC standards. Enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.
I had a hard time deciding too. Both watches have their pros and cons, neither are perfect. I guess it really depends on what each individual wants and values in their watch - you can’t go wrong with either of these. 🙂
Steinhart, owned an Ocean Blue for sometime and had no issues apart from people grabbing the wrist to take a closer look.😊
Another cracking review buddy! Great to see you keeping the passion alive 🫶
Thanks a lot man! Great to see you stopping by. I have to justify my new watches to my wife, so these reviews are a good excuse for me 😜
@@WristWatching I’ve stopped watching all watch reviews for a really long time after switching over to the Apple Watch lol (sad I know ..) but yours I will definitely catch it whenever you post man! Much love and support
@@melschwartz5578 appreciate it mate! Haha I had that phase last year. Got the Apple Watch and wore only that for a good 6 months. Now I just use it for workouts and sleep, had to find some time to give some love to my other watches 😆
Very interesting comparison!
Personally I would choose the Sugess because it's a better looking watch (for me!), and because the Steinhart is too expensive for my wallet 😅, and maybe for a hommage 🤔
Thanks for the video! I love comparisons! Always very instructive 👍
Thanks for watching! Honestly, you can't go wrong with either of these. They're both fantastic watches.
Sugess every day,all day ,simply because of the glossy dial or piano black dial. At half the price with a better date magnifier, it's a no brainer.
The Sugess definitely looks better to me too. The Steinhart has a certain charm though, while the Sugess feels cold. I always wear the Steinhart over many of my more expensive watches. Very hard to describe, but that’s the magic of watches I guess.
I like the less squared off case shape of the steinhart
2:00 Whew! So it's not just me imagining things. My Ocean 39 Ceramic Green's lume-pip/triangle has also turned slightly yellow. Bought it new back in December 2020, so it's not *that* old of a watch. I always thought modern lume wouldn't patina, but I guess I was wrong.. :)
I feel you, I thought it was just me too the first time! I then saw many photos of the same issue on the Steinhart FB group. If yours is really bad, reach out to Steinhart. I’m sure they’ll sort you out with a new bezel 🙂
Loving your reviews, very high quality. Found your channel today, via Reddit.
Where do you buy/ sell your used watches?
Thanks man! I buy/sell on Vinted and Wallapop. I’m based in Portugal though, not sure if you have those apps where you are.
Really surprised at the quality of lume on the steinhart. Having said that I would still choose the steinhart
The indices are definitely the weakest point of Steinhart’s lume. But like you, I’d go with the Steinhart too!
Nice review. Not interested in getting watches from Aliexpress, to many other great independent watch makers making great watches...like Steinhart. My next watch will be the Steinhart Ocean One Vintage Chronograph II in silver.
Did you do a review of the Alpha Paul Newman Daytona? It's a pretty good watch for the monies...under 200 dollars. It fits well and I get a lot of compliments on it. It's my least expensive watch but I love it. I do wish it came with a sapphire crystal instead of mineral and I did order a new bracelet since the OG version was crap. Overall a good automatic watch that's fun to wear without breaking the bank!
Thank you! AliExpress watches are definitely a rabbit hole. I’d choose Steinhart over (most) AliExpress watches any day of the week though. Great choice you’re going with for your next Steinhart!
Haven’t had a chance to try an Alpha yet, but I’ve heard a lot of great things about them a couple of years back. Happy to hear you’re enjoying yours!
Throwing in another comment here: My 39 Ceramic Green is still one of my favorite watches, and I appreciate the fact that Steinhart aren't constantly doing huge changes to their designs, but:
With "true" applied indices and a glossy black dial, this watch would look *so* much better. It does have the dial layout and general appearance (lines of text, fonts, elements on the dial, etc) much better nailed than all the Chinese homages that I'm aware of ... but those non-applied-applied indices (they're super-flat and look more like steel washers sitting on printed lume-plots) and the "light black"/dark grey and somewhat "grainy" looking dial color are a let-down, IMO.
They do do "true" applied indices on some of their other models and adding a piano black dial also shouldn't be that big of a deal. So these points, along with the way-too-weak cyclops could probably be rectified at minimal to low additional cost and thus are a bit of a head-scratcher for me.
You know what, you’re right. I never noticed that about the indices, but they do look more ‘stamped’ than properly applied. I would love to see them improving their models so they don’t get left behind by the competition from AliExpress. Like you said, these are relatively low cost upgrades that they should address, it’s been years of the same complaints!
I would buy the Steinhart, simply because of the female endlinks. My 6½" wrist wouldn't agree with the Sugess male endlinks.
BTW, I've opted for a Steinhart OVM 39 and love it.
My 6.5 inch wrists agree with you, female endlinks make any watch more wearable. I’ve been itching to get the OVM39, glad you’re enjoying yours! Do you find the domed crystal super reflective, or is it not noticeable in regular use?
I would go with steinhart because it wears smaller. Agree that the lume on bezel of steinhart turns yellow/patina rather quickly. I have the first gen ocean one 39, the lume goes patina in the 3rd year of ownership plus the bezel backplay is bad with slight misalignment
Exactly, I love how small it wears. Seems like that patina happens between the 2-3 year mark on all models. It’s a minor complaint though, I’d still choose it over the Sugess.
Steinhart needs to improve on the date cyclops and the clasps. Even if that raises the prices up a bit.
Do you have any experience with Tisell? I’m debating their sub homage.
I’ve owned the Tisell Marine Diver. The Tisell has a better movement, but the Sugess has much better case finishing and bracelet quality. Bezel action is about the same for both. If you’re shopping around that price point, I’d suggest going for the Sugess instead. I’ve heard great things about the Cronos sub too.
What about San Martin Submariner Homage? I think you have a choice of stainless steel or Titanium with it Too as well as movements also either PT5000 or NH35.
I own two Steinhart watches. Love them both. IMHO best bang for your buck.
i'd get either one, not because of budgetary constraints, but because i cannot find a new sub at retail! @#* those flippers!
That’s the whole other issue with getting a sub. Even if it had the budget, I don’t think I’d have the patience to play that game.
The Sugess all day long the stienhart is nice and well built but I prefer the bezel action and on-the-fly and much better price at 220 with Sugess high beat clone of the sw200
I think I’d probably have liked the Sugess more if that movement issue didn’t sour my experience. It really is a killer value for $200. But there’s just something about Steinharts that makes me keep coming back to them - I just bought my 3rd yesterday!
@@WristWatching my go to is Ginault it literally kicked the crap out of everything and as unbelievable as it may sound is really on par with Rolex as far as the finished product is concerned for example I now own three of their ocean Rover 2 and both versions of the silent service
@@mr.eswatchreviews I’ve heard a lot of great things about Ginault, hope I can get my hands on one soon. Saw your review of it too, looks like an excellent watch. Subbed!
@@WristWatching awesome I really appreciate it out of curiosity which part of the world are you in
@@mr.eswatchreviews I’m originally from Malaysia, but I’m based in Portugal 🇵🇹
Got a steinheart ocean one . Bought it because it is fantastic value for money and nothing to do with the fact it looks like a submariner I would buy omega over Rolex all day long.(I do also have a midsize seamaster.
Steeldive, or Loreo for me. I’d wear an Invicta Pro-Diver or Pagani as a work beater too. 🤷🏻♂️
Those are solid shouts under the $100 mark. I’ve heard bad things about Loreo’s quality and water resistance, but I haven’t personally tried one.
As long as it is written SEAMAN on the dial, sugess is a no go for me lol
As having owned both, I must say that this is a bit of a mismatch. The Swiss made Steinhart has an immediate advantage. But if you are going on a "dollar for dollar" basis I suppose it is possible to make a comparison. I have found that while it is possible to find really good Chinese Sub homages, it is very difficult to find one with a reliable movement. The TMI NH35 is as basic a movement as you can find. To give you an idea of what I am driving at, you can purchase these movements new for around $35 USD. To overcome this disadvantage I chose to purchase my Sugess with the NH35, and then purchased a genuine Seiko 4R36 (gold rotor) and swapped out the movements. While this added $90 to my overall cost, the accuracy and reliabilty is now on par with most base SW200's. Still, for the novice watch buyers out there I would recommend saving your money and purchasing the Steinhart. It's a great first "Swiss Made" watch.
Spot on, I was approaching this on a dollar-for-dollar basis instead of comparing them directly. Thanks for watching!
Great.review! Do more head to toe comparisons!!!
i seen both in live and i bought the sugess ==> better and 50% PRICE
San Martin vs Steinhart is a closer fight, but I can guess the winner
Isnt sugess better than san martin? The downside on sugess is just on backplay bezel
@@shirodaditya09 I generally prefer San Martin, but Sugess makes the better sub homage, bezel action aside.
I own one watch from each brand ( SM 2nd Gen. 62mas); Steinhart ( 39 Gnomon Black Tudor roulette date).
When the SM needs a service will I take it to my watchmaker to install a new NH35 as I will askhim to service ny Steinhart's Stellita?🤔.
Get a Steinhart or the Invicta ( no pretensions) with the NH35 , or upgrade to Tudor , even the real deal if possible.
I own the San Martin version of the Sugess and the Steinhart. When you have both of them side by side and compare with a Submariner it’s easy to see the San Martin is much more of a knockoff and the Steinhart an homage. The case shape, crown guards, clasp, case back, etc are much more similar on the Ali express watches. The Steinhart case is more rounded, has an engraved case back, unique clasp, etc making it different enough.
I am selling my Sugess (the same version as in this video), it runs fine.
@@cm1971it great choice! I had the earlier model too, it’s a fantastic watch.
@@cm1971it highly doubt it. Long Island Watch sells replacement bezels and inserts for the Kamasu. You should check those out.
I have an ocean one had it 3 years it’s now ingress water! My watchmaker replaced the low quality gasket and he replaced the glass never buy a Steinhart
Seesten
Sugess ist in allen Kategorien besser. Steinhart ist viel zu teuer und kommt nicht an Sugess heran.
Steinhart all day
Steinhart’s watches are ok but just two things on this watch is lame. The first is the mag. Second is the hollow bezel. It feels very cheap. Even cheap seikos has nicer bezels.
Spot on, they should really update those. People have been complaining for ages.
Steinhart and it’s not that close
I thought so too, but when you take the price of the Sugess into account, it's a closer fight than I expected.
Se deve esser una copia, almeno che sia uguale...
I would take a used and broken Swiss watch before 25 free Chinese watches.
The truth have to be told: Sugess are just some rolex replica build (noob or vsf) without rolex logos and a low beat NH35 to be cheap. Steinhart is a homeage but clearly with its own design cues to avoid be a blatant design replica.
I’m with you on that. The Sugess is well built, but I couldn’t connect with it because it was too close to the actual Sub. The Steinhart has its own personality, I always reached for that instead.
Steinharts whole portfolio is based on replicas. They don’t have a single original watch design.
I think the sugess watch company's watch is better than the steinhart watch company's watch After all, steinhart watches are copycats of rolex not original at all If you're going to make a similar watch, you have to make it similarly well. It has the advantage of being a product of a European company with a Swiss movement, but considering the price, I think the sugess watch is better.
I think they both have their merits. If you want a more direct homage, the Sugess is definitely the one to go with. The Steinhart is a more indirect homage, but as you mentioned, some people like the Swiss movement better.
Sugess please. I live in a cave so I need great lume. That cave is canada 😂.
The fact that the pip went yellow is not good. Steinhart never gives me good happy box open box experience .
Sugess has wonderful watches
The Sugess is definitely a better fit for your cave life 🤣
Which Steinharts did you own?
German/Swiss movement vs Chinese....
Have you owned a (good) Chinese watch? San Martin, Sugess, Seestern and the likes have incredible build quality.
I don’t like this comparison bruh too many ties.
I was surprised too, I felt the Steinhart would be the clear winner. But it was a closer battle than I thought!
Welp i made a decision...lets just say.....now I have Se(a)men on my wrist.....take that how u will😅
To REALLY cement the win, use both watches hard for a year or two. The Sugess will literally start falling apart. The bezel will get looser and looser and the stem will get more and more wobbly. Add the fact that the water resistance on the Steinhart is real...and a fantasy on the Sugess. The Steinhart is heads and shoulder above the Chinese junk. It's not a close call at all.
Model names “ Ocean” & “Seaman” really. I wear a Seaman and it look good on my wrist. They should really have an American that knows the English language before they put names on Chinese watches.
Great video man! I think they're both solid choices for the prices, but I would agree that Steinhart would take the top spot. Also the fact that you can tell Steinhart is a homage but clearly not a 1.1, that for me makes it even better. Great video! Keep it up
Thanks a lot man! I agree, people tend to call Steinhart 1:1 copies. But when you compare it beside something like this Sugess, you can clearly see that it has its own personality. Appreciate the comment! 🙂
Steinhart is also paying people a living wage.
