Pearl Jam was the band. Chris was roommates with their original singer Andrew Wood from the band Mother Love Bone. This album was a tribute to his loss to a drug overdose and Eddie had just joined the band when the album was recorded. He stepped in to help them with this song when they'd stalled in its production.
from Wiki "Hunger Strike" was written by vocalist Chris Cornell. It features a duet between Cornell and vocalist Eddie Vedder. Cornell was having trouble with the vocals at practice, when Vedder stepped in. Cornell later said "he sang half of that song not even knowing that I'd wanted the part to be there and he sang it exactly the way I was thinking about doing it, just instinctively.

So I met a young Eddie Vedder in a Boston bar back in my band days, 1991. He was with all the guys from Pearl Jam, but this was right after Andrew Wood died...so they weren't Pearl Jam yet and nobody knew who Eddie Vedder was yet. I asked him if he knew Cornell because I'd just heard this song, Hunger Strike, and I was blown away by Cornells vocals. He said, yeah I know Chris, he's amazing. Then he told me he sang on this song too. But I was like, yeah, right...this guy, Eddie, whoever he is, is full of shit. Fast forward a few days, I see the video and I'm like, holy shit...that's the guy from bar...he was telling the truth. Funny memory...

To be fair, though, Chris had the range, especially that early on! Similar Grunge cadences too,at times! I'm sure that there's a demo somewhere overdubing both parts. The duet made more sense, considering Eddie was already in the band of what would become, Pearl Jam with the guys...🥲

This is the first ”proffesional” recording Eddie Vedder ever did. He lived with Chris before he got his own place in Seattle when he moved there from like San Diego or something. Eddie needs to be preserved and praised for being the front man that lived through all the hardships. He prevailed and carries the legacy of both Layne and Chris with grace!

    • @dspressnall
      @dspressnall 2 місяці тому +4

Actually Chris lived with Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone. Eddie was a surfer/singer in San Diego who was given a three track demo of what would become Pearl Jam by former Chili Peppers drummer Jack Irons. He recorded the vocals over it and sent it back to the band. They brought him up for an audition/vibe check. While there he attended rehearsals for this album.
Andrew Wood had been the lead singer for Mother Love Bone, a band featuring Stone Gossard and Jeff Amett. When Andrew OD'd Chris wrote a bunch of stuff in tribute and worked it out with Stone and Jeff, the drummer was Chris's drummer from Soundgarden, Matt Cameron

Listening to this, I was thinking about how Eddie has basically become the last front man standing from so many of the bands from that era. He definitely fought his own battles with fame and more, but I wonder how he feels surviving when so many of his contemporaries did not... Especially since they were friends or at least acquaintances over the years.

As good as both Chris’ and Eddie’s voices are, the meaning of the lyrics here and the reason Chris even wrote this song is the most important thing. What a sweetheart he was! This song is solely for the fans! He is so angry with the record labels and big music corporations and he feels the fans are getting ripped off by the industry due to album prices and everything that goes along with that. “ I can’t feed off the powerless “ meaning he feels bad about it but at the same time, it’s his career. So he’s torn. He’s going on a “hunger strike” to bring awareness to what’s happening. Great song! RIP Chris. You are surely missed. 😢

This is, actually, Eddie Vedder's FIRST pro. recording!
This was recorded BEFORE Pearl Jam did: TEN!
...Ved was in the house and Cornell wasn't nailing the lower register the way he wanted it.
Somebody brought Eddie in and he did a run on it, just with Chris and Cornell was like: "Yep! That's it. Let's go."
Eddie was the only guy who wasn't connected to/friends with Andrew Wood on this album.
The entire Temple Of The Dog album was written & recorded as Chris Cornell's way of: paying tribute to, & trying to (as the saying goes) "deal with" the death of his friend (and, really: the guy who made Seattle 'the next place' -at a time when "grunge," briefly, actually existed, but no-one outside of the NW knew what that word referred to, musically!🤘🤘).
Andrew Wood was lead singer of: Mother Love Bone
(the bones of which, later, became: Pearl Jam) and: Malfunkshun.
...both were much more influenced by 1970s music and glam rock. 🤘🤘
-The reason that people get confused is because: the Temple Of The Dog album wasn't released until YEARS later!
After Pearl Jam and Soundgarden had broken through and become major acts/major draws!
...so: people (as I, myself, am wont to!) tend to "timeline" things according to: time of release.

Cornell was a very unique singer that was able to bend his vocals to any type of music. Truly a talent that will be missed.

I met Chris Cornell at a party in Seattle back in 1995 when he was already a huge star... But I won't bore you with the story. He was just a nice guy. Anyway...
His craziest vocal performance is on a Soundgarden tune called SLAVES & BULLDOZERS. Bluesy grunge. The entire Temple of the Dog album is fire. A couple of rockers but mostly ballads of which my favorite is CALL ME A DOG. Then there's all the solo cover songs he performed after Audioslave hung it up. Honestly, he was THE best rock singer of my lifetime so far. Just edging Freddy Mercury and AXL Rose and a guy called Mike Patton from Faith No More. IMO

Chris is definitely the number one vocalist of our time. I’m 51 and have been listening to him since I was 18 and no one compares to him. Freddy and Axel Weren’t even close to his talent. Reach down is a great tune to.

It was because of Temple of the Dog that Eddie joined Pearl Jam. Temple was a short lived supergroup to pay tribute to one of Chris’ friends and roommates. It’s sad that of the grunge era Eddie is the only vocalist still alive. Please hit up Pearl Jam.

Eddie gets most of the vocals on this song. If you want to hear Cornell sing his ass off, review “Say Hello To Heaven” off this album.

Monstrous big band from the 90s which you have not touched yet would be Barenaked Ladies. I would go with "Old Apartment," for best vocal performance.

It's basically Soundgarden with the soon to be Mookie Blaylock, later changed name to Pearl Jam. It was very cool, too, of Cornell...Eddie was rhe new singer, just moves up from San Diego to join the guys of Mother Love Bone in this new band that became Pearl Jam, and Chris, already established in the Seattle scene with Soundgarden, graciously gave Eddie those vocal parts.
