Tiger 2XL Robot in action! | Nostalgia Nerd Extra

- Here's the Tiger 2-XL Robot released in 1992 (sometimes people think it was a Tomy 2XL robot). It's actually a re-vamp of a 1978 version, and impressively allows the operator to interact with the unit and hear appropriate outcomes. 4 buttons on the front of the robot allow the user to answer questions asked, which then switches to one of the 4 tracks held on the cassette tape within. Each tape is programmed in a way so that everything flows coherently during the interaction.

He was my favorite toy as a kid and honesty still think about him
I remember the damn thing almost like a childhood friend. Its so odd.
@@kkownzor I bought one on eBay and tapes also. My 4 year old loves it
Same he was my favourite too
Original version was an 8-track (1979)
He was a bit of a smarty pants, lol!
I just turned 30, I don't know why I thought of this toy. It came out when I was 3 years old and I remember it very faintly at my grandmothers house. I miss the good ole days.
yeh, i was 10 i believe. my cousin and I had a blast playing with this thing
You just turned 30?! You're still a baby!!
@@sdlock83 what about me? I’m 35
Beautiful
@@ShinyFlakesShinyFlakes you are halfway through life. So no....😂
I still remember my Monsters, Myths, and Dinosaurs cassette. I loved 2XL's laugh.
Probably my favourite, it had some creepy sounds but that's probably why I grew up after as a teenager liking bands like Korn and slipknot and loving Halloween 🎃 lol
Thank you for this! I'm 37 and feeling like a kid listening. Wow. 2XL is good shit.
I’m 37 I had one too 😺😺
"Queschones." And that laugh 😂
Oh my god.... That voice!! Thank you for doing this
I STILL have my 2-XL! And he still works too ^-^
Nice I have one too and it also works
I still have mine in my parent's attic. I need to break it out and see if it still works. I put sooooo many hours into it as a kid
check out 2xlbot(dot)com - most of the tapes are there in digital form.
Mines in my attic lol
Same ere :)
I had this as a kid. I loved playing with it
I had this as a kid :3
Had this as a kid, loved it. Also used it to play a technoheads tape, where it all began. Born in 90.
What was techno heads?
Thank you so much for the memories! Born in 89 thank you!!
In 2014, a coworker surprised me with a 2XL for my birthday.
Nothing in this world has ever been right since then.
This little guy was my main cassette player in my room until I got a cd Player. I loved it
This thing was not afraid to insult a child. The 90's went hard.
Facts!
I didn't know there was an extra channel, glad that you mentioned it in a main video.
I loved this little guy. I got him and My Pal 2 on the same Christmas.
I miss my 2XL and that corny laugh.
Sounds like the tape deck is spinning a bit slow. I miss this little guy.
I had no idea you had a second channel - just found it, and subscribed. I absolutely LOVE the 1992 2-XL. I clearly remember seeing a demo unit it in a toy shop when I was a kid and having NO idea how it worked. I eventually got one on ebay for my son when he was growing up. He really enjoyed it and though he is now 18, still has the robot sat in his room :)
Got it as a kid myself and I have to admit I still like it even though I am much older now. :-) Most of the tapes are now emulated at 2xlbot(dot)com - I didn't make that site but I am spreading the word - nice that is has been created to preserve the recordings which could end up being lost forever without that kind of preservation.
Had a blast with this when I was younger. Older now, I never realized the voice sounded like he was from Jersey with a touch of the downs.
That’s a Long Island accent, not Jersey
Apologies, from the South.
I had an older one like this. Used simplified punch cards.
Also
“Don’t know math kid? GETTAATH HEEREE!”
Had this as a kid! Thank you so much for bringing this memory back to me! Favorited!
I'm 36... What's with this age and suddenly rediscovering their 2xL. I seriously don't remember him talking that oddly tho. Like how his inflections are all disjointed. But I remember that laugh and those sound effects! This was my favorite toy as well. I had all the tapes too. I still think it's pretty incredible tech
Brings back good memories
I actually had this!! And it's why I know if you were to count to one billion, it would take you over fourty years. :)
I would like to see the longest video ever of this thing.
Omg!!!!!! This was my favorite toy as a kid. Lol
I loved this thing when i was young
I never realized 2XL was a Jew from Brooklyn
Ray Sussman 😂😂😂😂
Mort Goldman from Family Guy is the voice of 2XL.😂
Alejandro Zapata nope, Michael J Freeman voiced 2XL who was also the one who created him
Holy shit... the nostalgia!!!!!
My little brother and I had one of these little guys. We also found out that if you put any other cassette in him and pressed button 3 or 4 it would play the tape in reverse
Just jogging down memory lane☺
I forgot how Jewish 2-XL was
😂
Looks exactly like the one I had, but the voice pitch is off. I'm in the UK, I don't know if that effects how it was distributed over here. The clips you can find of the old one from the 70s, that's the voice I remember, but it was in the body of this one!
Never noticed super Jewish mel brooks was the voice of my favorite childhood toy 😂😂😂
I had one of these, I should have held on to it.
my friend with cp had him. he always laughed at the way he said ''but-tons''
I had no idea you had an extra channel!
I had one of these and a Teddy Ruxpin. I wish I could remember what happened to them.
I had this robot I remember it telling a story about a little boy who got lost in the woods
Ooh I had one of these! I loved it! I remember I got it got my 7th birthday. I kept it until I was 14 years old and decided to give it to my cousin on his 7th birthday... He threw it down the stairs the same day and broke it 🙄
I was roughly the same age as you when I got mine. Christmas of 92 and I was 8. Kept it until I gave it away to my little cousins, too. Probably when I was 16. They didn't break mine though. If I'm remembering correctly, I got a talkboy that same Christmas along with my NES. It was such a good year.
Awww man, why'd you stop. I was enjoying that.
This toy man was my childhood
All time Topics. I had this tape for mine
I had it in the Spanish format so I'm a bit surprised with with how well it was translated, even the jokes are the same!
I’m I loved this toy when I was kid
Play the video at 1.25x and he’ll sound the way he’s supposed to
Still needs to be pitch-shifted....but yes, it's closer to the original at this speed.
I Wish id kept this throughout my life i played the heck out of this i had the space tape, the sports tape and the animals tape my favorite joke he told was: if a man was born in grecce raised in Spain came to America and died in Mexico what is he? he's dead
i got one as a hand-me-down, never had the tape to play the game, so it was just a tape player with no FFW. aslo didnt have the plug so i hardly got to use it as it ate C batteries like candy.
2:17
He told the cannibal student joke wrong.
The kid wasn't expelled because he burnt up the teacher, he was expelled because he BUTTERED UP the teacher.
2XL sounds like an extra from Goodfellas
I had one as a kid
Sounds like the speed is a bit too slow.
It is. Mine doesn't sound like this
Way too slow.
Change the belts in the tape deck
Yeah too slow replace the belts
@@sopeachynetworks2822 Or the batteries might be weak.
It talks in a higher pitch (faster playback) than what sounded.
Honestly if there's one toy I'm glad I didn't have as a kid it's this. I hated robots as a kid and was scared of them
This is a different voice than I remember. This one is lower pitched.
If Teddy Ruxpin and Furby had an early baby
I never have it. What it happens if you put a normal sound cassette into the robot?
Ours is still working.
Hey 2xl is in my parents loft, how did you get hold of him?
Hold up... Is this Randall the Honey Badger guy voicing this?
I remember this thing... and the BetaMax version was even before my time. This robot even had it's own show--PICK YOUR BRAIN. Huh. This version is an upgrade, yet it sounds like a step back. Hmmm.... not as warm and friendly as Teddy Ruxbin. Even though it is a step-up from what they got in the '70's.
Hey man, not sure how much you know about the 2-XL but perhaps you can help me with something. I first heard about the 2-XL in the Techmoan video that you mentioned, and after reading the description in this video, I'm confused. You said people often think this was manufactured by Tomy, and sure enough after checking Wikipedia it says it was manufactured by Tiger with no mention of Tomy, but after looking on eBay there are a ton of them that are branded with Tomy, complete with Tomy branded cassette tapes.
Are these knock-offs where they put the wrong company name, or did Tomy manufacture the 2-XL in certain regions outside the US? Sorry for the long-winded comment but my curiosity got the better of me, lol.
All the best!
They were all Tiger's creation (the 1990s version) but Tomy released them in the United Kingdom under their own brand name. Milton Bradley and other companies released them to other countries in Europe under their brand names. Not knock offs...done with the arrangement with Tiger.
How did the buttons work!?
Voice is running a bit slow. Might need new batteries. Run at 1.2 speed to hear more accurately
Is that the all time top topics program playing in 2-XL?
A tape i had played in reverse because i pushed one of the buttons
Who chose the speech for that toy? I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
I wonder how he would have responded to Black Rhino.
Voice is a little deep in the beginning.
Did he just drop a cannibal joke....
I remember the voice different.
Did the same actor voice Roger Rabbit?
He hated it when you pressed the buttons to early
is it just me or did this robot sound a bit like top hat gaming man xD
Ciao! Ho ritrovato il mio 2xl in cantina! Qualcuno mi può dire che batterie servono? Grazie!!
Funny how they didn't use the same voice actor for all of the tapes lol
Just found mine out my parents garage I've given it to my son but the speaker sound is going struggling to hear don't suppose anyone knows how to fix it?
Have you tried the headphone jack? I believe this model has one, I used to use mine with headphones when I was a wee bab.
@@deletedTestimony yes I did try that that's broke too luckily someone has uploaded the entire cassette catalogue online.
How does it know how many questions you got right and wrong when it's Not a computer and just a analog tape player that is specialized at playing quiz games? If you play the tapes in a regular tape player you would probably hear 2 separate audio tracks per side since it divides the 2 stereo tracks into 4 separate audio tracks and just moves the play head to the appropriate track when you answer a question or should i Say "Quest Ton".
I think the buttons just switch the audio channels from Side A and Side B. I had one of these and if you pressed the C and D buttons with a normal audio cassette it would play the other side of the audio cassette backwards.
Cassette tapes have 4 tracks. Normal cassettes have 2 tracks for 2.0 stereo sound on side A and 2 tracks on Side B. These 2XL tapes played in mono sound where the buttons would access any of the 4 tracks, including side B tracks. Playing a 2XL tape in a normal player will play 2 tracks at the same time on left and right speakers. Playing a normal cassette in a 2XL, you can access either, left audio, right audio, the flips side playing in reverse right, or flip side in reverse left.
To answer your question about how it knows how many questions you got right, the game forces you to answer with specific buttons. For example, you have to answer 3 questions, which means you can get either 3, 2, 1, or 0 questions right. The tape has to be created so that without pressing the wrong buttons and cheating, your last answer will end you on the correct track of answers right. Some tracks that you are not supposed to be on at a given time, sometimes have audio recognizing that you are cheating and pressing random buttons.
By the end of 5 questions, it can't know how many you got right or wrong, but by reserving a "winning" track the whole way through (you'll note that the only question with FOUR possible answers is the very first -- this is where it reserves the winning track), by the end of 5 questions it can determine the following cases: You got them all correct / you got them all correct EXCEPT that last one / you got that last one correct, but you didn't get them all correct / you got that last one wrong, and you also got some other ones wrong.
It's a pretty clever little trick to "fake" memory from a machine that doesn't really remember a thing.
I had 2xl as a kid but don't remember him being jewish..
lol. The voice just sounds like one of the "Oh, Hello" guys pretending to be a robot.
If comic book guy was a robot
My neighbor broke mine after two weeks of christmas and I never used it again :(
1:50 free jokes? nah fuck that shit. You are going to have to work for your jokes kiddos.
if i were the robot and you were the child
What tape is this?
Guidobot
More like 2-XCool
I remember it's voice very different
Bruh. Before I watched this video, in my mind, the 2XL sounded like a legitimate robot. Now that I've watched this video, I can never forget that 2XL sounds like a 55 year old gay Jewish stereotype from Brooklyn.
Bruh.
Bruh....
That pose,
That sass,
That free-form flow
Bruh...
2XL was black and trans
The First Jewish Robot.
It is so annoying!!!!!!! I had one as a 9 year old child back in 1995 BUT it´s Spanish tapes (I am from Mexico) had a more sympathetic narrator.
The thing got old real quick, but since my unit was able to play regular music tapes and there was no such thing as consumer CD recorders or Mp3 files at the time, it became my portable boombox (despite it´s sound quality is really poor).
By those days Aggrotech was in it´s infancy and being little known a friend of mine used to buy (more like his parents used to buy him) every CD he asked for and allowed me to record mix tapes from them.....
2xlbot(dot)com has an emulator with most of the tapes. The English version was voiced by Dr. Michael Freeman, the inventor of 2XL.
Even the voice was made in China.
It's like listing to a Trump speech.
listing? ......HA!!
