Block and Dodge All Overground Mini-Bosses (Patch 2) | Dark and Darker

- This is an updated guide for fighting all overground mini-bosses in Dark and Darker for patch 2 (November Wipe) as Ironmace is beginning to remove all of the cheese spots that players typically fight these mobs in. This specific guide highlights the use of Buckler blocking and Perfect Block as they can both interrupt and stagger the Skeleton Champion, Wraith, Cockatrice, Ruins Golem, Centipede, and Worm.

I've found Giant Centipede spit can also be dodged if you're hugging it by crouching just before it spits, don't even need to look down because the spit's at its highest point when it first comes out before dropping off. Timing's a bit tricky and sometimes you get hit, but it's still an option and it lets you stay right next to the centipede to bait the bite more.

You can crouch in front of the centipede and the poison spit will always go above you. Which also makes it super easy to block and get longsword ripostes as well

EDIT: extra tip, for the centipede-spit you can also just back up a little and diagonal to avoid it since it splits into 3 projectiles (you can have the "middle" and "side" projectiles simply shoot around you). Pretty easy to do consistently and might be something you'd prefer, depending on the situation

I like to just duck the spit because it's more consistent and you can't always risk taking damage. (Especially with this server lag lately)

I'd love to see an in depth longsword video. It currently has an issue with impact power, and perfect block is useless on it.
definitely will get working on that, looks like IM is mostly complete with the functionality and balance of the longsword so expect that video soon!
@ryan6daysaweek I also have a proposed change:
Standardized reposte timing for all weapons. Probably around 1-1.5 seconds after the parry. High impact weapons are now harder to parry, with tighter timing due to the impact difference. This makes perfect block useful for longsword. Low impact weapons that are harder to parry now reward you for getting the parry, instead of having a 0.2 second window to reposte.

Did they change the impact power on nightmare skeleton archers or on grey shields? I noticced that with a grey round shield I can no longer block the 3 shot attack from nightmare skeleton archers. The first arrow knocks my shield away and the 2nd arrow hits my chest.
I think u should make one for hell showcasing buckler bc bard is prolly still one of the least played classes but no one has ever done a buckled blocking guide and now with 6 blocking power that’s pretty good to be able to stagger mini bosses like that but also how does that work in hell and how to block some player attacks with the buckler I guess it sounds so simple just the same way u do with the other shields but I don’t know buckler rapier is my go to on bard for dps movement speed and defense but since u have less coverage bc it’s smaller the areas u can block are a bit harder for the mini bosses still it’s makes the class very fun
I think shield mastery allows you to block all the skele champs attacks no?

are you still able to dodge the wraith by crouching, looking down, and hugging around him clockwise? haven't played in awhile
man the centipede was themost annoying miniboss when it had aimbot spit, thank god it's actually consistent to dodge nowadays
First, distract target. Then block his blind jab. Counter with cross to left cheek. Discombobulate.

So is there no way to currently dodge the wraith if you’re not near any stairs and let’s say, playing as a barbarian ?
Gread video but it would have been nice if you showed us how to know when the cockatrice scream so we know when to look away.
that's a good point, I should have included that in - for now I add that it has a unique sound queue and a much longer windup, so in general if you accidentally do raise your shield to block you will still have time to turn around before the petrify hits

what if my friend bort me the pavisse? can that block skelinton champ or ramatra demon attacks?
also I'm not sure I get why the buckler has such high blocking power... I get that it's the only full metal shield and that it's a parrying shield so it sorta makes sense? but if you've got a heater shield or something it's kind of silly that it gets staggered by more stuff than the buckler no?
Just a balancing thing to compensate for the much smaller hit box of the buckler
just a balancing change to account for the small hitbox of the buckler, prior to the update they were rarely used
There is a pretty nice short video on UA-cam by Robinswords called 'Will a Straight-Arm Parry with a Buckler Collapse?' that shows that you can easily block a heavy strike with a buckler using a good technique (straight arm) and basically not having to recover, compared to a bad one (bent arm) which Dark and Darker uses.
It would make sense if the block stance with a buckler was different but yeah, it is possible.
Maybe the forced arm bend from the mass or straps of the other shields makes the recovery worse? idk
@xandred4512 Yeah I've seen that as I'm in the HEMA fencing stuff though it still doesn't quite feel realistic. Neat stuff though
how do you actually dodge the wraith though? you only really showed how to block it. its the only one ive been struggling with
from my experience the centipede will never do the retreating poison trail if it has its back to a wall

I found the wraith guide section to be a bit unsatisfactory here, are you basically saying that it cannot be dodged unless you have stairs? It would be good to have it explained more clearly

So they’ve removed a lot of the dodge methods? I don’t like that. Simply kiting back isn’t as fun as ducking and weaving over attacks.
they removed the dodge strat for the wraith as it targets downward now, I do think they will introduce some more monsters with more unique attack mechanics though

@@holo.thewisewolf.4055 what class are you playing? All classes have access to blocking/ranged weapons except for rogue but their ms can't get that low
@@ryan6daysaweek i like barb, and slayer fighter, but i find my self in cqb as ranger aswell. barb being the main culprit of slow and no real block (staff being not a real blocking)
The buckler having higher blocking power than the bigger shields has to be a bug. That’s just doesn’t make sense
I think it's intentional to justify the smaller block-box; I think I saw them note on its increase in one of the recent patches
Yeah it's intentional to balance the fact it's harder to use. I believe they said "buckler can now parry a non-crush war maul, have fun"
it's one of the more recent updates as to bring more functionality to the buckler since the blocking surface area was so small
It's harder to use, of course it should be better, otherwise why ever use it lol
It's now my shield of choice. Same PDR as bigger shields, much less movement penalty, and the ability to block pretty much anything without getting staggered makes it an easy top choice.

no disrespect to the dev, I understand theres only one guy working on the AI/animations but some of these bosses have such a terrible balance about them and feel completely jank
might have good guides but uses cheats ingame, had respect for this man until he spam shot me with a crossbow 4 times within 3 seconds in game. sadly not a skill issue more of stop cheating holy shit
hey Childish, I understand you may be upset as you may have lost your kit in what may appear to be an unfair way but I can assure you no cheats were used. If you would like, send me your in-game name and I can search through my clips archive to see if I have our fight so I can show you from my PoV. I typically do not do this but you have commented on multiple videos now so I want to at the minimum ease your nerves. Better yet, if you have the clip on your end you can send it directly to any discord admin and they will review the footage for you. Again, sorry we had to battle but that is only the nature of the game - I am sure you will get me next time!
why in the world does the buckler block better than the bigger shields lol
The other shields are wood whilst Buckler is metal. You couldnt wear a bigger shield because it would be too heavy
no one was using the buckler prior to it getting a blocking power of 6 so I am guessing this is the dev's way to encouraging more buckler users haha
