Donny, thanks so much for your time and for your genuine feedback and opinions on products. I'm just starting out my research into action cameras and your channel was very much a welcome discovery. As for being 40, yes according to statistics for the US, you have approximately 40 Christmases left so make them count. Cheers Mate
That is very kind of you to say and tank you for taking the time to say them. I truly enjoy making these videos and the reward is comments like yours! Be careful with your camera research. It's a slippery slope. 😏 Thanks again for your time and support!
I had a Telesin on order but canceled it for the Smallrig cage due to being able to change out batteries easier. I use an extended swivel mount for mics & lights. It gets them out of view on the camera & works well for front & back orientation. Adapters are our friends 😊
I love anything that makes it easier. I noticed the Telesin on Amazon but have been so pleased with the others that I did not bother. I use alot of SmallRig products and have never been disappointed by any of them. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment! I really appreciate your support and could not nor would not be able to do this without viewers like you!
I did try all 3 of them and stopped on Ulanzi one. And... i really suggest you to get Ulanzi's ballhead for Osmo Action. First of all it comes with magnetic quick release mount, but what is more important it has one more cold shoe on the side. So you can mount some light on the top of the camera and shotgun mike on that ballhead, and use wind fur. Cuz it's gonna be far away from camera lens.
Thanks for the comment. That's good advice. I actually use the Ulanzi Pano ballhead on my Joby Gorilla Pod for that very reason on my main camera. For action cams I use the Ulanzi M16. It also has the cold shoe on the side. I'm back and forth between the Ulanzi and SmallRig. For handheld I mainly use the SmallRig for the DJI Mic. But if I'm going to mount to a suction cup or anything moving, I prefer the Ulanzi to eliminate the quick release all together and use the built in tabs. The Ulanzi gives me more peace of mind when it comes to "protection"
@@Donny_B Since Action2 time, Ulanzi has pretty great lineup of magnetic accessories for DJI cameras… Damn. I realized that I sound like an Ulanzi’s ambassador. Anyway, I really like your channel. For my motorcycle helmet's chin mount, the Small Rig works best. Can plug in the receiver and mount the transmitter inside the helmet, and have great audio and video.
I think SmallRig combined the best features of all of them. They have always seem to think about the little things that matter. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.
I love reviews that takes use case in mind. For example, I think the smallrig is the best for me as I also have DJI mics. I also want to note that I find the smallrig magnetic clips easier to use than the original DJI. I do a lot of outdoor shooting in Canadian winter. Easy clip use is useful in the cold.
Thanks for your comment. I try to answer my own questions and relay my findings. It seems so many reviews are sponsored and biased. I imagine the clip can be useful. I know my hands don't perform well in the Alabama cold, I could not fathom Canadian winters. Thanks again for your time and comment. It's greatly appreciated!
I just ordered like 5 different cages for my Action 4 & 5 lol I think the Smallrig is going to be the best overall but its bigger, so on my helmet it blocks my air vents (size and weight matter when your wearing it on your face lol) Also I cant open the cage from the side (to remove the camera) so I have to undo the mount fasteners to tilt it down every time. So I'll end up with one cage for helmet, and another for motorcycle. Another thing to note is the Smallrig is the only one that really keeps the buttons from being pressed for the most part from a drop by recessing the buttons, whille t he others mostly add a pass thru button.
Hey, great comparison video! I came across this video trawling through a load of contend here as I’m considering buying an Osmo Action 4 to learn more about creating videos. I really enjoyed your straight to the point honesty, subbed while watching the videos and will probably spend the rest of my rainy afternoon over here in the UK watching your other uploads. Keep up the good work good sir!
What an amazing comment! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave it! I'm glad you found the video useful. Of all the action cams I've tested, the Action 4 is my favorite. It's a great camera with really good built in microphones. A little heads up though, the Action 5 is expected to drop soon....like usually around the end of July or early August, so the price of the 4 should be discounted. If you have the patience you could probably get a pretty good deal. Or if you have the budget, maybe even go with the 5. Thanks again for your time and comment. It really means the world! Enjoy your rainy day in! It's about 100° here with 85% humidity! I would love a rainy day!
Thank you for such a great comparison on all these cages. I was very worried about using the DJI mic receiver latched to the camera but after watching you video I'm leaning towards the small rig cage 😁. But before I finally buy the small rig cage, I want to know if the we can mount the DJI mic receiver onto the cold shoe mount and if it will securely hold the receiver or should I be getting another small rig cold shoe mount with a ¼" thread for secured mounting. I use my action 3 on a adhesive helmet mount and sometimes on a handlebar mount.
Thank you for the kind words and taking the time to say them. I still use the SmallRig to this very day on the Action 4. It's definitely the best option for the DJI Mic and still protects the camera like the first day I bought it. You can certainly use the cold shoe for the receiver but it does get in the way of the record button a bit. But still totally usable. Thanks again for your time and comment!
Like a threaded filter? Not for the 3 or I guess the 4 now. Smallrig did for previous models. I did watch a video the other day where someone put both of the rubber rings that goes around the lens and used a 47mm to 52mm step up ring. It fits snug over the rubber rings. It seemed legit. I'll look for the link.
Nitze the best heavy duty but can't change the battery. Smallrig next heavy duty, telesin the lightest but can't change the battery. Ulanzi is light weight and lets you change the battery. Iv'e had them all and for the money the Ulanzi is good. If your throwing it off mountains then get the Nitze. Get the smallrig if your a snob.Tilta is my goto lol.
I ordered a SmallRig cage for myself just two days before this video, as it was the only one that was definitely compatible with the DJI Mic (according to the documentation). I wasn't sure if I made the right choice, since the cage from Ulanzi receives a lot more attention online. Thank you for creating this video and clarifying this for me and all Osmo Action 3 owners!
Thank you for taking the time to say that. I do not think there is a bad choice between the 2. But the Smallrig found a niche. On their first cage for the Osmo Action, they were the only ones to accommodate the little receiver you needed for external mics. So they have always been a step ahead. I'm featuring a new Smallrig product in a few weeks that the creative space has needed for a long time. Super exciting so stay tuned if you're interested. Thanks again for your time and congrats on finding a product that's right for you.
Nice reviews, but one glaring omission from the video is a list of weights, and how it compares to the standard cage. When using as a true action camera, weight is a big factor, and it would be nice to know which is the lightest of the bunch….

Attention: The cages are great and have different mounting options and side openings. However, they are not to be used when riding a motorcycle. All metal cages with a metal lever or slider for the side openings will rattle and rattle. From a certain speed you only hear a rattling and rattling. It even gets on my nerves while driving. The sound of the recording can no longer be used.
Well, that's a bummer. On a motorcycle is when you need a cage the most. And doing all that filming to get home and find out your audio is not usable....yikes. I appreciate you taking the time to let all of us know. Thanks for the support as well!
I know this is an old video BUUUUUT I just ordered the Action 3 and am looking for a good cage and stumbled across the SmallRig. I have heard complaints that the SmallRig magnetic mount will rattle, is that true? I am looking to use it as a dedicated "dash cam" for vlogging off road adventures here in Montana. Our trails around here aren't the smoothest in a Jeep so if the mount rattles, I know the camera will go nuts picking up all that extra noise and movement. Thoughts, opinions, ideas? Thank you!
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment! I use the SmallRig Cage everyday along with the SmallRig quick release and they both work great. I personally have not had any issues with it rattling. I could see where the quick release could make a little noise mounted on a dash going down a something like a dirt road. Overall they are both solid and would recommend them to anyone. I hope this helps and thanks again for the support!
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. The SmallRig is nice. I'm pretty sure Neewer just released a cage that fits the DJI Mic as well, but I have not tested it. It seems legit. Thanks again for your time and support!
I wish. That is something that is always on my mind. It's gotten a little more loose over time as well. If I here of something I will let you know but at the moment, SmallRig is the only one looking out for us. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Wish I could have been more helpful
SmallRig has always been really good when it comes to the little things that the creator needs. Even with the first osmo action, their cage accommodated the Cynovo adapter for 3.5mm mics. I'll be featuring a SmallRig product that we have needed for a long time, probably around the first of March. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. If there is anything I can ever do for you let me know. Thanks again for the support 👍
Thank you so much for the kind words and for taking the time to watch and comment. It means more than you think. Glad I could help. That's the reason I made it
Hi. I noticed that the shutter button on the camera is hard to push (especially with the motorcycle gloves). Does one of that cage solve that problem? thanks for your reply and for your contents.
Thank you for your time. Probably the best one for the particular issue would be the Pgytech. It has a record button that is flush with the top. Very easy to press. Especially since you do not have to get your finger down in that little hole. It's a nice cage. It honestly feels the most refined and polished of the bunch. The color is nice as well. Hope this helps! Thanks again for watching and commenting 🙂
The number on the paper is 60. Thanks for helping us out, as with my old Osmo action after watching your video I think I'm going to pick the Small Rig because of the off side cold shoe, unless I win yours 🙂
@Donny_B unfortunately I'm still not convinced with the 3, ordered another one to test side by side, and then return the worse one and get the 2 to test with...
@Diogo Reis I heard that. There was bit of bad press in the beginning. Pretty sure all the issues have been sorted with focusing. The battery life alone has sold me. That and the recharge time. I still use the original pretty often. Not very familiar with the 2 but I don't think you can really go wrong with any of them.
@Donny_B I got one produced in 12/2022 and wasn't sharp at 30cm, ordered another one to see if I'm lucky... If I don't like it, probably will get the 2, I wish I haven't sold my 1st Gen osmo action, it was flawless...
I don't think it's capable of focusing that close without turning the lens. They are made to focus more at infinity being its an action cam. I think they were expecting people to be mounting them on dirt bikes or snowboarding down a mountain. Not necessarily for Vlogging and talking head stuff. Which I get, and kind of prefer infinity over macro. I believe there is a lens for more of the close up stuff. DJI got alot of hate, but most people forgot it is meant more wide shots . Still a great camera but I don't think you'll find what you're looking for with the Osmo Action. At least until they are capable of dual pixel AF
The Tilta was only available for pre-order when I published this video. That is a great feature to have. Smallrig used to do the same thing on the original action. I like that Tilta had color options as well
Hello from France, thank you very much for making this comparison video, it is very useful. I just got my first action camera, I managed to get a very good deal on a second hand osmo action 3 adventure combo (300€ instead of 460€ retail price here), seller bought it 2 months ago, so i still have 22 months of warranty left. With 3 batteries in the adventure combo, the first thing I noticed is how annoying it is to change the battery with the default cage. I thought that 3rd party cage were garbage, but I quickly change my mind. I'm still learning to master is, but for this summer I'll buy a better cage for sure. I saw the ulanzy and a small tripod with a ballhead with direct magnetic quick attach. It looks really good, have you tried it ?
Hello, thank you so much for the kind words. Yes, the DJI cage is very aggravating. I personally am a fan of the Ulanzi Cage. Very well built. I do not think there is a bad choice between the three options. I have not used the Ulanzi magnetic clip, but a use several of their tripods. Their battery grip is very useful as well. They make good products and they are all very affordable. Try not to get too hung up on all the gear. I would just get you a good hand held tripod, Ulanzi has quite a few great ones, and get familiar with it. Pretty soon it will become an extension of your arm. The more you use it, the better you get. Congratulations on your new camera! That is quite the deal. I hope you get a chance to use it everyday! Thanks again for your time and comment. It means more than you know!
Here is a link to a video I made on some great accessories if you are interested. No pressure though. ua-cam.com/video/xsc2siIHfrQ/v-deo.html Links for all sorts of goodies are in the description. Not sure how useful they would be in France, though. Lol.
Thank you for your answers, I'll check your dji action 3 must have accessories video. I bought it mostly to replace a 2014 Panasonic waterproof camera I had (HX-WA30), the 9 years technological gap is absolutely insane. I couldn't believe how convenient these action cam can be. It is also way more comfortable, and secure, on a daily basis than holding a smartphone and shooting. Have a great day!
I forgot one thing, while I was watching I thought that you had 580k subscriber because the video look so professional to me. 😂 When you talk about reaching almost 600 subscribers I was shocked and I subscribed rightaway 🎉. Keep up the good work, thanks a lot
You are too kind 😊 Thank you so much for saying that! Video is still very new to me. I learn something new every single day. I try to make quality but some things I just simply do not know how to do yet. There are so many biased videos out there and I was having a hard time deciphering the difference between a product I needed versus a product that someone was telling me I needed. That's where this whole youtube journey stemmed from. I try to answer the questions that I would ask. As long as I keep doing it, everything will naturally get better. So again, I thank you for being so kind and for giving me your time. Those are two things that are very rare to come by these days. We have a really great group here though. I appreciate all of you! 🥰
Those were not released at the time I published this video. The Tilta was available for pre order. I reviewed what was available at the time. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment
Not sure which one you're referring to but there were a few more released after I published this video. I believe there is one made by Tilta that has a few different colors and Neewer makes one as well. Haven't tested those but I do know Tilta makes great products and Neewer us more on the budget side. They're all viable options. For me it came down to the SmallRig but the Ulanzi was a close 2nd. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. I hope you found it useful 🙂
The gratitude is all mine. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment kind words. Hopefully, I can continue to help in the future! Thanks again!
There are a few reasons to use a cage. Protection is one. If you have it mounted to your handlebars or outside the car and it takes a tumble it will not be totally destroyed.....hopefully. Another is the cold shoe and 1/4 20 threads for mounting accessories such as lights and/or microphone. Then you have the vertical shooters....the plastic cage that comes with the Action is less than ideal and very needed to shoot vertical. The cage gives you a way to mount vertical and still able to change batteries quickly. I hope this helps and thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.
That's a good question. The only one that I have personally submerged has been the SmallRig and have not had an issue. They are all made of aluminum so I think you'll be pretty safe with any of them. Yeah, sorry. We picked a winner a few weeks after the video was uploaded. I hope I helped answer your question and thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. I really appreciate the support.
just wanna share that Im using dji wireless mic with only the usb c connection. Trust me, im using it for motovlog, highspeeds, bump, etc. It was not blown away or got flicked out from being connected
Thank you so much! Yeah, I've started gaining alot of trust in the USB, and your right, it's a bit annoying that the receiver can only face one way. I'm convinced that big camera is never going to give us the perfect anything, lol 😆 😂 Then we would stop buying their latest and greatest. Companies like SmallRig and Ulanzi really come through for the little guy when it comes to "thoughtful" products. Thanks again for the time and comment. I really appreciate it!
@@Donny_B yep, sure thing man. Just a correction on my comment, i was referring to ulanzi case of how they did not think of the coldshoe position. This content of yours is very helpful. Hope that other companies that usually make cases for smartphone will start doing one for action camera so more options will rise.
Yeah, audio has been a weakness for me. I've been learning a lot and have since upgraded some of my gear. I appreciate the feedback. That's how we learn and grow. Feel free to check out some of my more recent videos. Hopefully, you can tell the difference. Thanks again for the feedback and for taking the time to watch and comment. I really appreciate it.
No, I didn't fail to. They were not released yet. The Tilta was released a few weeks after this video was published but was available for pre-order. The Neewer and Telesin were much later
There is not any metal on the camera to scratch. The rubberized coating has held up tremendously. My original Osmo Action, Action 3, and Action 4 have lived their entire lives in a SmallRig Cage with the exception of the 3, it is in the Ulanzi. The cages themselves have scratches but the cameras are still in excellent shape thanks to the protection of the cages. The cold shoes are nice to have as well. @@Donny_B Because of this video, looking to get the SmallRig. Do you know if they only sell the magnetic mount for the Action 2? There isn’t one specifically for the Action 3 right? Just want to make sure to order the correct one. Thanks
@bamnpeb It is literally branded Action 2 on the magnetic mount. It works fine. As far as I know they do not make one specifically for the Action 3. Which is weird because I'm pretty sure it is not backwards compatible. The Action 3 mount will not work on the Action 2, but the 2 will work on the 3

Thanks for taking the time to put this video together! I'm gonna swing with 190
I also ordered the SmallRig cage after watching…had my eye on it, and this swayed me.
I was told the small rig mount does NOT lock to the cage.. does it?
It attaches the same way as the DJI, with clips and magnets. It also adds the option of ¼ 20 and action cam style mount.
@@Donny_B my dont lock on :(
@@Donny_B Yea but I dont know why my does not 3662 does not lock into the cage?
It's funny the PGYTech is the one I actually want to try the most out of those!
My guess is 282!
Also, cracked me up with the "just turned 40, half way there" remarks. I'm 34 and live in constant existentialism, so I feel that sentiment so hard.
I had to go with the smallrig due to having dji wireless mic no other options have that sadly!
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. The SmallRig is nice. I'm pretty sure Neewer just released a cage that fits the DJI Mic as well, but I have not tested it. It seems legit. Thanks again for your time and support!
@@Donny_B No sir thank you for sharing this amazing video. i appreciate it.
Hi Donny, have you found a rig which holds the Osmo 3 and the Dji mic more securely, something that raps around both?
I wish. That is something that is always on my mind. It's gotten a little more loose over time as well. If I here of something I will let you know but at the moment, SmallRig is the only one looking out for us. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Wish I could have been more helpful
@@Donny_B Thanks for replying Donny, if I find anything I’ll let you know 👍
Thank you for helping me to make a good decision for my action 3
Good work! Thanks for the content.
Thank you so much! Im glad you found it helpful and thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
Smallrig for me as I can mount DJ receiver directly to a3
SmallRig has always been really good when it comes to the little things that the creator needs.
Keep up the good work. You have helped me make my searching easier
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. Sorry I did not see your comment sooner. I'm glad you found it helpful. That's why I do it.
Thank you for this one, it’s straight forward and great!👍🏾👍🏾
Thanks a lot for this nice revieuw
Very helpful video- thanks!
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. I'm glad you found it helpful! 🙌
Your still missing the tilta action 3 cage . It has a screw on magnetic lens filter connector
You missed the Telesin, Neewer, Tilta, and Nitze cages....
Those were not released at the time I published this video. The Tilta was available for pre order. I reviewed what was available at the time. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment
small cage baby great vid
Thank you for the informative video
I'm glad you found it helpful. Thank you for your time and comment.
Good Video and INFO 👍
Great video! 392!
Thank you!
Whats the name of the 5th cage?
Not sure which one you're referring to but there were a few more released after I published this video. I believe there is one made by Tilta that has a few different colors and Neewer makes one as well. Haven't tested those but I do know Tilta makes great products and Neewer us more on the budget side. They're all viable options. For me it came down to the SmallRig but the Ulanzi was a close 2nd.
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. I hope you found it useful 🙂
@Donny_B what are the name of all the cages in the video? Small rig, ulanzi, pg tech, dji, and???
@randylarsen2531 There is only 4 cages featured in the video. SmallRig, Ulanzi, PGYTECH, and the plastic DJI that comes with the Action.
Happy belated birthday 🎂
Thank you 😊
GOOD INFO CHEERS
Thank you! I'm glad you found it helpful. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
Really good video thank you
The gratitude is all mine. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment kind words. Hopefully, I can continue to help in the future!
Thanks again!
why do you need the cage at all?
There are a few reasons to use a cage. Protection is one. If you have it mounted to your handlebars or outside the car and it takes a tumble it will not be totally destroyed.....hopefully. Another is the cold shoe and 1/4 20 threads for mounting accessories such as lights and/or microphone. Then you have the vertical shooters....the plastic cage that comes with the Action is less than ideal and very needed to shoot vertical. The cage gives you a way to mount vertical and still able to change batteries quickly. I hope this helps and thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.
what’s the most water resistant cage? anyone win the Pgytech case yet, too? 😂
@@Donny_B it helped alot, i just got my DJI OA 4and just doing research atm. i think ill use the one it came with for now, then maybe the small rig.
Hello new friend i just subscribed great information thx
Hey 👋 I'm glad you found us and thanks for the support! I'll do my best to earn it and thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
very nice video. appreciate
just wanna share that Im using dji wireless mic with only the usb c connection. Trust me, im using it for motovlog, highspeeds, bump, etc. It was not blown away or got flicked out from being connected
I will love to have the small rig. Just shame on small rig bout not thinking of the receiver position
Hope that other companies that usually make cases for smartphone will start doing one for action camera so more options will rise.
the voice volume is low
Yeah, audio has been a weakness for me. I've been learning a lot and have since upgraded some of my gear. I appreciate the feedback. That's how we learn and grow. Feel free to check out some of my more recent videos. Hopefully, you can tell the difference. Thanks again for the feedback and for taking the time to watch and comment. I really appreciate it.

You failed to include cages by Neewer, Tilta, and Telesin. Tilta cage looks promising.
No, I didn't fail to. They were not released yet. The Tilta was released a few weeks after this video was published but was available for pre-order. The Neewer and Telesin were much later

Awesome! Thanks for participating! I'll announce the winner in a week!
they are all metal and can scratch the camera.
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, though. I really appreciate the support 🙏

The Action 3 mount will not work on the Action 2, but the 2 will work on the 3
Thanks.
No worries. That's why I do this. Hope it helps!

Really good video. Also my guess is 69 😉
Thanks for your support? Where are you located?
@@Donny_B I'm from Malaysia :)
That is amazing that my little video made it all the way to Malaysia! You won the closest number, but I have a feeling you already knew that, 😉. Honestly, I did not expect international attention. You get full credit for winning, but I can't ship internationally at this time. I am a very small, self funded channel. If you can dm me on Instagram I will see what I can do
