  • Cataracts are any opacity of the lens or its surrounding capsule. This results in a gray or white appearance to the center of the eye, visible through the pupil. It is common for both eyes to be impacted by cataracts, but not necessarily at the same time. Cataracts are a very common eye disease in pets of all ages, and can be due to various causes. The most common causes include diabetes, inherited or genetic cataracts, age, intraocular inflammation, trauma, and exposure to chemicals.
Cataract surgery is the only way to remove cataracts and restore vision. The cataract is removed using the same technology as human cataract surgery. This is called phacoemulsification. After the cataract is completely removed, an artificial lens is replaced to restore normal vision.

I live in San Diego, the 8th largest city in America and there are only 3 veterinary ophthalmologists here 2 of whom have months long waiting lists and the third one is a 24hour emergency vet/eye clinic with questionable reviews. There's also Tijuana which has some excellent vets but it's sometimes tricky navigating down there and for eye care I rather stay north of the border so yeah, not a lot of choices but super high demand for veterinary ophthalmologists and from my experience I think it would definitely be a good and nobel career choice . 👍🏼

Cataract surgery is too expensive for me right now. So I had to look for an alternative and Lanomax a cataract dissolving eye drop has been working out for my senior dog. Hopefully his vision continues to improve.

My 9 year old Chihuahua Rocky has cataracts and is absolutely mersible with it so I've decided to let him get the surgery. We have the exam appointment on the 19th. I hope he'll be able to get the surgery so he can be happy again.

@@nysportsfan2576 He has Uveitis and is completely blind now. But he's happy and adjusting. What was causing his misery was an enlarged heart and a collapsed trachea. He's back to his old, happy self now.

My dog just got cataract surgery and the doctor called to inform me that she could not put in a new lense. Is this normal? What happens when a dog has no lense?

What brand of implants do u use and how do u determine the power of the lens u put inside the eye? How long do they need to apply eyedrops after surgery?

Would diabetes not make Max likely to get cataracts again as diabetes is one of the leading reasons to develop this? What is the recovery time the dog needs to wear the coller. I have a 13 yr old dog with advanced cataracts in both eyes, when is too late? She also has black circular "marks" on her cornea that are located in her central vision so does this get removed as part of any surgery? Not sure how you do it but my dog would not let anyone get that close to her eye without going nuts. Even humans are not great.
