i'm sure your turtle basks when you're not around. sometimes, they can be a bit shy. as long as you provide your turtle with everything i mentioned in my video, your turtle will bask.
Yea I haven’t seen him come out of the water at all since I owned him almost a week ago
Let some goldfish go in the tank. She’ll really love you for that. 👍🏻
My turtle was best friends with 2 goldfishes
I've had my turtle 10 months and it will not bask at all, it stays in the water all the time.
mbearlover that's normal. Mine does the same. Had it a long time only seen him bask twice. Nothing to worry about
My mud turtle didnt bask for about a year now he does it quit a bit
how long have you had him? when i first got mine he wouldn’t bask but now he does all the time you just have to wait till they get used to it and make sure they can get to it
mbearlover make the water less warm
The male I have just destroys everything, I named him Tank because he plows through everything.
Females get bigger (up to 10 inches in shell diameter), males somewhat smaller (around 7 or 8 inches).
ReptileRoad Do you know of a cheaper option or a much more stable alternative to the ramp?
Just took over care of a sideneck for my niece. Very informative. I'll use this video as a reference in the future. Thank you.
Can you do a must have video so I can buy what I need and the other stuff later
Wow, it's been nine years since this video was made. You can tell you were very passionate and knowledgeable. Hopefully, you've maintained a level of that enthusiasm. Thank you for the info
I am a huge turtle lover. I found your video very insightful. I don't own a turtle yet but hope to have one, one day. Right now just doing some research. Thank you for making this video. I will be referring to it should I get a turtle.
+Dan Polaniec advice. Prepare yourself for the amount of work and care it will require to keep your turtle healthy. You will become obsessed. Best enclosure: indoor pond. Second best: 300 gallon acrylic tank with under tank refugium.
Is it safe to put 2 RES with an African sideneck. I seen the sideneck alone in PetSmart hiding. When it seen me it was begging for attention. My two RES are very friendly and never show aggretion even during feeding. So would it be safe
my african sideneck turtle love to bask
i had a african sideneck i had got off of craigslist... it came with of all turtles a red eared slider. i read that they rarely would get a long but mine did. but my african side neck had passed away on me the people i got him from said he was 26 years old
Connor lorkowski wow. thats old!
yeah. it was like 6 months ago. i just was at the petstore yesterday and purchased a 4 inch african sideneck
Can you make an update on your turtle plz
Are the plants real? I've been using real aquatic plants and they go downhill very quickly. Thanks for being so responsive to all the questions on here. That's awesome.
You absolutely don't have to treat water for chlorine with turtles, have keep 100's of turtles over 60 years and never used anything but tap water
Your turtles must be super sturdy! My vet recommends to use conditioner
Is that a weed plant in there ??😂
Thank you
THANK YOU!!! I just rescued a African Side Neck ❤️ I need more tips!! I wanna make sure my turtle stays happy☺️☺️🐢🐢
Rescued how? What’s your story?
Tenants at a house abandoned the turtle. He had been left there for a long time ☹️ he is a much happy turtle now!
I have a 9 inch Northern Yellow Faced Turtle. I recently adopted her from a friend who moved to a state where they aren't allowed. I have found her to be extremely fussy with food and I feel as though she's not eating enough. She seems to be in great condition but I want her to be as happy as possible.
Try mealworms and sun-dried shrimp. They tend to be less fussy w/ live food or once live food :P
I found one wondering just around in front of my apartment and there is no place that I can keep it lol also afraid that if I let it go someone might hurt it ☹️☹️☹️
Got a female
Great job thanks 🐢
Your video on the turtle care I have to say it the best I've seen, allysamazings video tells nothing about care it just shows the turtle swimming with no ramp to get out of water. You are very informative and that shows you take care of your turtle. That poor turtle on the other video looks so helpless, I worry about him. I took note of all your advice. Thank you, Maureen
Thank youuuuuuu, I'm thinking of getting one.... but my circumstances are important as I will be moving houses this year but the baby at petsmart is so cute 🥺
I bought mine from beardeddragon.co. They run on that site for around $50 max. If you go to the petstore (petsmart or something) it will run you close to $80. Online you can get way better deals. I definitely recommend this bulb if you have a reptile needing both heat and UVB. They produce a lot of UVB and is the farthest traveling UVB on the market (ranging to several feet away). I only recommend zoo med too. Don't waste your money on anything else when it comes to UVB bulbs :)
I have a african side neck turtle
How do you maintain your water so clean. We just got our sineneck and the water won't stay clear longer than a day.
i feed my turlte nothing but shrimp thats all she will eat lol and worms sometimes
Where did you get your basking dock from? I am looking to get something more stable for my slider
Maybe this be.my next.pet.
I was 700 like
i just got got her to 1000 subscribers!!!!!! Your welcome.
Andreia DIY no thanks
Good video! Very informational
Mine does not eat any lettuce or veggies only worms and fish.
Hello I'm thinking about getting one
I can't get mu turtle I rescued to eat anything but mustard greens help
Thx
awesome
But they don’t like crystle clean water
Hey lady. My son got an African Sideneck from my grandparents for Christmas... and he won't eat. I haven't seen him eat a single thing since then. Any suggestions?
my turtle is a boy and in our gallon we have 50/60 gallons
Are they nocturnal cause I have one and he sleeps during the day and is more active at night
Hello!
Yes, that is totally normal
Any advice?
Im going to get a african sideneck turtle today!
cool! They are fun turtles :)
Nice i have African side neck turtle named Kameboes and i have two other types Golden thread turtle named Gamera Red eared slider named Ariel
They are not avid baskers at all. Most rarely bask. It's necessary to provide for it, but they are not avid baskers, not sure where you got that info from.
It may depend on the turtle. Mine basks ALOT. Especially of we're not around. I come in the room and she is sunbathing all the time.
Do these turtles shed skin?
I have found that if turtles shed their skin, it is an indication of the temps being too hot, or too much vitamin A in their diet. So, if the husbandry is spot on, no turtle should shed their skin. But shedding the carapace and plastron is normal :)
how much did everything cost
@reptiileroad - I'd love some info on the night light/lamp. What do you use and how did you set it up?
I hear turtle pee can cause Brian damage.. is this true for African side neck turtles as well?
I have an African sideneck & just saying, they are ground walkers. they do not like to swim. they should be able to stand on the ground and breathe.
Tiarra Shepherd not all of them are the same, mine has plenty of walking space and swimming space both are heated and he RARELY gets out of the water. My boy isn’t a ground walker.
I wouldn't say they need to be able to walk on the ground and breathe. Typically you want 6-8 inches of water for them. This typically allows for them to easily stand up on their BACK legs and breathe and then obviously provide places to be out of the water completely.
Thank you for the great info! My boys, their mother, and I. Love our new African sideneck! (Jo)..still trying to determine if it's a boy or girl. :)
Can they be put with other smaller turtles 🐢
Do they need heaters because I had to lock my tank because my turtle escaped but In order to do so I had to take out the heater, will this cause problems?
How big can they get ?
Reptileroad what brand is that basking platform? I know you said it in the video but you kinda talk fast lol
What watt PowerSun bulb is needed?
How much did the combo bulb cost?
What type of gravel do you have and is it safe?
I have one :3
My ASN is male not sure how old and I just got him a few days ago he doenst seem to be eating and isnt really interested in basking my red eared slider doesn't bask either any thoughts of how to get them too
My turtle is an African Sideneck and his basking area is this plastic dock that sits at the corner of the tank but whenever he tries to get on it, it always tips over and I’ve repositioned it multiple times but it still tips over. Does anyone know of any inexpensive basking areas that I could buy? I was also wondering how many times a week should I feed my turtle? Last question, my filter doesn’t seem to be working well, it works fine whenever I replace the water and then after a while (about a week or so) it stops filtering and I can see the water start to get murky. Does anyone know of any good filters that I could get?
How does your filter output work?
What stand for your lighting do you have? And what size is this tank again and what tank did you upgrade to?
i just caught my side necks breeding what do i feed them, keep them, and how many eggs do they lay? also is there anything i need to purchase for their nest??
what brand of ramp do you have? i cant seem to find one
Can i just feed my r.e.s and sideneck turtle commercial turtle pellets all their life? Just occasional worm with repti calcium on them
Kenneth Reyes no, they wouldnt be getting all their nutrients i would think.
Yes you can. Those foods are designed to contain the nutrients they need. This girl is literally providing terrible information to anyone trying to raise a turtle
what filter do you use for your tank??
Do,you have to have a uvb light if you put the tank by a window with a good light reptileroad
Carson Heldman yes u need a uvb bulb even if the tank is by the window. uvb doesn't travel through glass. i recommend the reptisun powersun uvb which is a combo uvb/uva/heat bulb and lasts for 12 months! you just have to make sure it's not making the basking spot too hot. it costs around $50. but any uvb bulb will work.
@@reptileroad6426 how do I make sure is doesn’t get too hot?
How much did The bulb cost
Around $50 online (best place to get UVBs is online).
Are they nice?
They are meant to be the only turtle in one tank since they can be aggressive toward other turtles, but they are really nice to humans once they learn to trust you :)
What is a informed
I have a question for you. I have a side neck to. My question is would I be able to take him out side to play?
storm serg33 they tend to be timid when you remove them. I use to let mine wander my apartment while cleaning it's tank and he would just run and hide in a corner
Its a living thing NOT A F!@KEN TOY!! LEARN TO LOVE AT A DISTANCE YOU DONT HAVE TO TOUCH ANYTHING TO ENJOY IT
Can they get along with sliders
It's best not to mix them. If you want to have more than one turtle in a tank, I would go with all sliders :)
***** You're going to believe everything they tell you or do...? Those turtles are stressed and depraved. Of course they aren't going to be territorial. Typically african sidenecks are more aggressive than the community sliders. In nature, african sidenecks are very solitary.
I got African sideneck turtle (Kisha) on three day ago. Can I bring Kisha with my two red ear sliders in the tank?
Master Pokémon i have 2 different turtles with my african sideneck and they get along very well. :) put them together and watch them :)
I wouldn't. They need very different tank set ups. A red ears tank should be full for it to swim and then a basking spot. Sidenecks aren't the greatest swimmers they need lower water so it's easy for them to get air
Do pelomedusa subrufa or the African side neck turtle with the longer neck bask, because I have tried every thing that you have said in your videos.
Yes they do. If you have done everything and checked everything (including water temp, basking temp, etc), unless you watch your turtle 24-7 you can't say 100% your turtle isn't basking. Sidenecks are elusive turtles. They can be pretty private and shy. They may not bask when they sense you are around. Either put your tank in an area of your home that no one is ever in, or start feeding your turtle krill/earthworms/superworms by hand so that they start to associate you with food and won't be so stressed out when your around.
ReptileRoad Ok i tried it and he is very active and he will bask in front of me thx
Jaylin Mitchell Glad to hear it
I've had my ASN for about 8 months now, and I can't seem to find any plant life that it will eat. I've tried lettuce, carrots, spinach, and a few others. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Water lettuce, duck weed and other aquatic plants. They are more natural and appealing. My turtle never eats greens either, only bugs and pellets, and fish.
Did she really say get a filter meant for 300 gallons of water if you have a 20 gallon tank. Are you serious... 2:18
Riddizle she has no idea what she's talking about
my african sideneck turtle do not like to bask
So I have two side necks in a 50 gallon tank with two internal pumps but the water is ALWAYS murky no matter how many times I clean it.
Is there something I am doing wrong ?
brianna thompson it depends on the size of your filter you would need a 75 gallon filter for a 50 gal
brianna thompson I used to have that issue and turns out my filters pump somehow got moved, look inside your filter and wiggle things around.
if I have 20 gallon tank I should you filter up to 300 gallon? where did u bring that information from?
Bnayahoo Arazy a lot of the information in this video is severely inaccurate. I would not rely on UA-cam videos for proper care advice
Not 300, 60 lol... but honestly you should have a 40 gallon tank for an African side neck
How do you tell the size of your turtle? I just bought an African Side Neck two days ago and I'm apparently keeping him (her?) in not enough water right now.
+celestialanimechika 10 gal per inch is how big the filled tank should be.
ReptileRoad I wouldn't go off that for a sideneck. They require much less water. I would surprisingly agree with this video and say 10 gallons for everyone 2 inches is good
Is it okay that I have a 40 gallon tank for my sideNeck turtle?
The marshmallow Town should be plenty. That's what I house mine in. He seems very happy.
That is SO much better for them in the long run!!!! My vet recommended 40-60... 20 is honestly a little small for African side necks
Hi, instead of aquarium, I used indoor pond instead and placed it outside of my balcony. I live in tropical climate. Two things:
1. I have set a flat rock as their basking place but I have not seen them using it. Do you know why?
2. After 3 months in the pond where water is regularly changed and de-chlorinated, I've noticed that my turtles are having skin sheddings below neck and their legs. Is this normal?
No. If their skin is shedding the water quality is off. Are u checking ammonite, nitrites and nitrates??
Ammonia*
I would assume it's their shell and YES that's normal. They do it to grow. If it's their skin that could be an issue. But typically it's their shell due to growth
I have the same turtle, I use pebbles for the floor of the tank because whenever I use gravel, it tries to eat it, would the pebbles be a problem for it ?
+Luis Bennett yes it can pose a risk of impaction
+ReptileRoad Any idea how I could stop him from eating the gravel? Thanks for the help btw
Luis Bennett don't use small gravel. Used larger pebbles
Pebbles are fine. Gravel is not
Absolutely not! I've had pebbles and rocks for my side neck and he loves it. Just make sure they are big enough so they don't eat it
How about to their own species
Not even their own species, unfortunately. Their best kept alone. If you have a large enough tank (I'd say like 500 gallons plus), then maybe a male and a female of the same species, but don't quote me on that.
ReptileRoad I have one in a tank with a pink belly and they are pals
Take him out. Just got a 6 inch male. Going into my 115 gallon low Boy Amazon aquarium.
Really great tank set up and it's good to see someone who knows all about turtles! Lucky turtle. I've subscribed. Check out my tank xxx
they can eat heart btw
I have a african sideneck turtle name is kamoebas and Chinese golden thread turtle name is Gamera.they are very good friends 🐢😎🙋
Can you use conditioner for fish for your turtle?
Repent now and trust Jesus Christ our Lord and savior please ❤️🥺
What gallon of tank is that
Ok thank you very much
Update
my sideneck is so shy she likes to sta down i have a res in their with him its a very tame res
Seems like you have to be shy to be a turtle. My turtle isn't shy though but that's because she has been handled and hand fed A LOT!
my res is not shy but my sideneck is so she hides undr basking platform when he sees me
