    i'm sure your turtle basks when you're not around. sometimes, they can be a bit shy. as long as you provide your turtle with everything i mentioned in my video, your turtle will bask.

      +Dan Polaniec advice. Prepare yourself for the amount of work and care it will require to keep your turtle healthy. You will become obsessed. Best enclosure: indoor pond. Second best: 300 gallon acrylic tank with under tank refugium.

      Is it safe to put 2 RES with an African sideneck. I seen the sideneck alone in PetSmart hiding. When it seen me it was begging for attention. My two RES are very friendly and never show aggretion even during feeding. So would it be safe

    I bought mine from beardeddragon.co. They run on that site for around $50 max. If you go to the petstore (petsmart or something) it will run you close to $80. Online you can get way better deals. I definitely recommend this bulb if you have a reptile needing both heat and UVB. They produce a lot of UVB and is the farthest traveling UVB on the market (ranging to several feet away). I only recommend zoo med too. Don't waste your money on anything else when it comes to UVB bulbs :)

    Do these turtles shed skin?

    • @reptileroad6426
      @reptileroad6426  10 років тому +2

      I have found that if turtles shed their skin, it is an indication of the temps being too hot, or too much vitamin A in their diet. So, if the husbandry is spot on, no turtle should shed their skin. But shedding the carapace and plastron is normal :)

    I have an African sideneck & just saying, they are ground walkers. they do not like to swim. they should be able to stand on the ground and breathe.

    • @AppleSauceEnthusiast
      @AppleSauceEnthusiast 6 років тому +1

      Tiarra Shepherd not all of them are the same, mine has plenty of walking space and swimming space both are heated and he RARELY gets out of the water. My boy isn’t a ground walker.

    • @IMTHERYJ0
      @IMTHERYJ0 6 років тому

      I wouldn't say they need to be able to walk on the ground and breathe. Typically you want 6-8 inches of water for them. This typically allows for them to easily stand up on their BACK legs and breathe and then obviously provide places to be out of the water completely.

    My turtle is an African Sideneck and his basking area is this plastic dock that sits at the corner of the tank but whenever he tries to get on it, it always tips over and I’ve repositioned it multiple times but it still tips over. Does anyone know of any inexpensive basking areas that I could buy? I was also wondering how many times a week should I feed my turtle? Last question, my filter doesn’t seem to be working well, it works fine whenever I replace the water and then after a while (about a week or so) it stops filtering and I can see the water start to get murky. Does anyone know of any good filters that I could get?

      ***** You're going to believe everything they tell you or do...? Those turtles are stressed and depraved. Of course they aren't going to be territorial. Typically african sidenecks are more aggressive than the community sliders. In nature, african sidenecks are very solitary.

    • @IMTHERYJ0
      @IMTHERYJ0 6 років тому

      I wouldn't. They need very different tank set ups. A red ears tank should be full for it to swim and then a basking spot. Sidenecks aren't the greatest swimmers they need lower water so it's easy for them to get air

  • @jaylinmitchell3930
    @jaylinmitchell3930 10 років тому

    • @reptileroad6426
      @reptileroad6426  10 років тому

      Yes they do. If you have done everything and checked everything (including water temp, basking temp, etc), unless you watch your turtle 24-7 you can't say 100% your turtle isn't basking. Sidenecks are elusive turtles. They can be pretty private and shy. They may not bask when they sense you are around. Either put your tank in an area of your home that no one is ever in, or start feeding your turtle krill/earthworms/superworms by hand so that they start to associate you with food and won't be so stressed out when your around.

      That is SO much better for them in the long run!!!! My vet recommended 40-60... 20 is honestly a little small for African side necks

    Hi, instead of aquarium, I used indoor pond instead and placed it outside of my balcony. I live in tropical climate. Two things:
    1. I have set a flat rock as their basking place but I have not seen them using it. Do you know why?
    2. After 3 months in the pond where water is regularly changed and de-chlorinated, I've noticed that my turtles are having skin sheddings below neck and their legs. Is this normal?

      @reptileroad6426  8 років тому

      No. If their skin is shedding the water quality is off. Are u checking ammonite, nitrites and nitrates??

      Ammonia*

      I would assume it's their shell and YES that's normal. They do it to grow. If it's their skin that could be an issue. But typically it's their shell due to growth

    I have the same turtle, I use pebbles for the floor of the tank because whenever I use gravel, it tries to eat it, would the pebbles be a problem for it ?

      Luis Bennett don't use small gravel. Used larger pebbles

      Pebbles are fine. Gravel is not

    • @Lizbinnington
      @Lizbinnington 3 роки тому

      Absolutely not! I've had pebbles and rocks for my side neck and he loves it. Just make sure they are big enough so they don't eat it

    How about to their own species

    • @reptileroad6426
      @reptileroad6426  10 років тому

      Not even their own species, unfortunately. Their best kept alone. If you have a large enough tank (I'd say like 500 gallons plus), then maybe a male and a female of the same species, but don't quote me on that.

      Seems like you have to be shy to be a turtle. My turtle isn't shy though but that's because she has been handled and hand fed A LOT!
