Who needs a boring gym when there's fresh air, hard work and possibly ducks in the bath?! Looking forward to the pond - who's going to film it while the other digs?! - and seeing what you're going to grow. 'Be kind' is my most favourite YT vid sign off. The ducklings are adorable! Next week, puppies and bunnies!

A pond is a lovely idea but a big commitment of time and energy. Maybe a plastic toddler pool till you're really ready to tackle a pond. When I was a young woman, I had lots of barnyard animals, including ducks. Plastic pools always worked for me and the ducks in the barnyard. They enjoy clean water. A plastic pool is easy to clean. Just dump and refill.
Do you know the cardboard or newspaper trick for gardening? Put a thick layer in your vegie beds, with good overlap and up the sides a couple inches. The cardboard will kill all plant life underneath; then, as it rains or you water, the cardboard begins decomposing and attracting earthworms, which enrich the soil and turn it to gold. Happy gardening and congratulations on your darling duck babies.

Those blackberries look just like what I have to deal with here in Oregon. Unfortunately, they are very hard to get rid of and will come back since it is impossible to eliminate all the roots. Are they native to Germany or introduced like they are here? I'm so impressed with all the energy that you and Ellie have. You will surely make that old house and yard into a beautiful place that you can be proud of!

Watching you two clear out black berry bushes brought back memories of when I had to do the same thing when my Family and I bought the property we have here in Oregon. Cool, you've got ducks lol. I used to have ducks, chickens, turkeys, and some other animals when I lived in Florida. I really bet that you and Ellie are really getting a work out while doing all this stuff. Have you gotten used to the idea that your home isn't on wheels anymore? lol

Maddie, you and Ellie are doing a great job! I am going to give you a dad lecture about lifting with your legs, though, because it looked like you were using your back to yank out that fence post. It's easy to forget in the heat of the moment, but no fun to have chronic back pain. Ok lecture done. I love what you're doing with the place and look forward to the next episode. I don't know if you ended up doing this, but it's a good idea to put a piece of scrap wood on top of the post when you're hammering tit into the ground. The reason for doing this so that the scrap wood gets the indentations from the hammering rather than your post. It also helps prevent splitting the top of the post. You could also paint the top of the post with wood protection (and/or add a wooden cap on top) to stop the post from rotting over time.

I once lived in a suburban area where Canada geese and mallard ducks nested every spring, and would marvel at how the tiny chicks grew up so quickly and became full-sized members of the flock within a few months. It would be great to have a big enough back yard to have ducks and chickens and maybe some smaller geese.
And I can totally relate to the ordeal of turning a backyard wilderness into a garden. Massive amount of work that never seems to end, but it's good, honest work and is well worth it in the end. I've never had to deal with blackberries but I imagine that the seeds will soon sprout and you'll be picking those out for months and years to come. They're great in wild areas where you can pick and eat them without end, but on private property they're invasive.
I built a raised bed planter a few years ago out of untreated douglas fir, and it's given around 5 or 6 seasons so far but rot has set in so I doubt that I'll get another season out of them next year. But lumber was super cheap back then around $3 for an 8' 2x4, so no real complaints. But you don't want to fill it with earth though as that's too dense and heavy. Best to fill the bottom quarter to third with not yet decomposed chopped-up wood, branches, leaves, grass clippings, etc. (nothing that will grow back of course like blackberry clippings), then the rest with a mix of compost, peat moss or coconut coir, and relatively lightweight raised bed soil. A little earth is ok but not too much. Don't put any non-decomposed materials in it or it'll leach nitrogen from your plants. There's tons of videos on all this.
So what are you going to plant? So many choices and there's never quite enough space for everything you want. I like to start out with salad greens, lettuce, kale, arugula, spinach, etc., maybe some radishes and onions, then fruiting plants like tomatoes and peppers, and root veggies like beets and turnips. And of course tons of flowers, sunflowers, marigolds, dahlias, zinnias, gazanias, and so on. My favorite is fragrant flowers like nasturtiums, flowering tobacco, petunias, alyssum. I also like morning glories but they're not for everyone.
Great progress so far! And your ducks will be happy as, well, ducks!

loved the Cuba Libre t-shirt...I miss my gorgeous island so much.
Interesting fact: Cuba Libre (Cuba Free) is a drink and also a battle cry used during the independency war in Cuba against Spain. It is also part of a phrase used by the cubans when they try to face the cuban communist dictatorship which is "Viva Cuba libre". Cubans also use "Patria y Vida" (Nation/Country and Life) in protest to the government, and is a change to the slogan used by the government which is "Patria o Muerte" (Nation/Country or Death)
