- The German Invasion of Norway is still very much in full swing. The German Wehrmacht is moving north from Oslo, where a Norwegian force is trying to halt them in anticipation of Allied reinforcements. The British do land in Norway, but don't necessarily rush to relief the Norwegian army. Meanwhile, Norwegian 'traitor' and 'failure' Vidkun Quisling rises to be the new leader of Norway - only to get rejected by Hitler again. Numerous powers are now trying to grab, restore or consolidate military or political power in Norway. It's a mess.

@@JK-cl3sj you don't have to worry that we will be silenced by Article 13 - it only pertains to stolen material - we have acquired the copyrights for any material we use, so we're fine, A lot of falsehoods abound about this legal framework. At the end of the day it's fairly east to dumb down to one sentence. Platforms like UA-cam and Facebook can now be held liable for copyright infringements on their platforms, while until now it was only the creators who were held liable. UA-cam and Facebook obviously don't like this and have agitated against it pretty heavily, spreading a lot of misconceptions in the process. Many of our colleagues have even been called in to meetings with UA-cam management who have asked them to please rise up in arms against the whole thing. Creators who base their creation on stolen material are also in fact upset... but hey, they're stealing other people's creations!!! And there are without doubt many things that end up in the grey zone where it still needs to be worked out how we handle it. But all in all, it's really nothing else than saying that the bank where you have your money is also responsible for keeping it safe, and can't just say "hey your money in our bank was stolen, but that's your problem - we're just the bank".

I have better information than entire world power governments worked with during the fight over Norway. That's insane.
GPS started as a U.S. military program.
Until recently most areas of the world were poorly mapped if mapped at all. With satellite images and more effort put into mapping, a large portion of the world is now relatively well mapped at least for civilian needs. So any general until recently would drool over the quality of the maps we have readily available for civilian use let alone military use.

World War Two should make a special on Soviet propaganda. I mean, compared to Soviet prpaganda Nazi prpaganda was joke pamflets. Maybe thats oversimplified, but truth is tha Soviet propaganda played a role why that regime lasted as lon as it did.
A lot of Germans probably didn't buy it but believed it anyway just because they wanted to believe it. I mean, who'd want to think that their own countrymen are doing such attrocities and that you are also contributing to them? And everyone wants to be the hero of a story so there is always a justification for anything.
It's good that we're in the age of Internet now, here something like that could never happen.

In Max Hasting's All Hell Let Loose, there was a rather amusing bit where he described a local Norwegian shooting club forcing a German unit to retreat.
Never mess with a mob of angry hunters and sport shooters - they ‘re armed and better marksmen!
There are some good stories like that in the Norwegian campaign. I have heard many of them, brave farmers. or just the local youth, taking their trusted Krag (Norwegian rifle) for a go at the invading army, driving the Germans to a holt or retreat.
A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

@@user-ld4qt6ci7b Yep, the Consitution of the United States of America is a very unique document. When you do what it says no more and no less- things work and works well- It also helps to be located is maybe the best chunk of real estate on the planet.
When the series is over someone needs to make a complication of all of Indy's opening lines.
Considering that each opening is about 15 seconds we can probably figure out that since the war spanned 2,194 days that
2184/7 ~ 314 episodes

The entire Allied effort looks so disorganized that if people weren't dying it would be comical.
It is funny to compare early war allies efforts to there late war efforts, you see the problems get ironed out, there command chain getting organised. You also can see how the axis start to collapse as well.
@@Historyfan476AD I know one thing from an organizational standpoint was (spoiler alert) the Americans did have a guy like George Marshall to organize the allied effort.
I think it gets worse, the british newspapers were not already used to the "war silence" and they reported british intentions and plans publicly. They also reported false news of victories that were later used by members of the parliament as facts.

@@nicolasbertrand3932 With time they became more careful and the military also became better at managing the media. Even so, British newspapers were available in Berlin a day late for most of the war, delivered via Sweden, and Lord Haw-Haw used items in them to prepare his broadcasts.

Imagine you're training to be a soldier in London and all of a sudden you're shipped out to the edge of the world with insufficient supplies without any clear orders while being endlessly harassed by German bombers...
I mean you kind of signed up for it..
Dutch Robinson they really didn’t tho, it’s clear that these were conscripts due to their lack of supply and training. British regulars (well-trained volunteers) would have signed up for it. These didn’t.

I don't think Luxembourg even had a battalion.
More like a one-company assault.
@@vatonage1599 I saw a photo of Luxembourg's troops being reviewed, perhaps in 1939. It was a tiny force in 19th century style uniforms.

They did not seriously contest the German invasion in May 1940 and probably could not. Luxembourg was annexed to the Third Reich and thousands conscripted into the German armed forces or Order Police.

I'm placing all of my chips on the Maginot Line holding back the German assault on France. Trenches worked only two decades ago, surely well established bunkers with interconnected arcs of fire can wipe out anything that comes at them. Then they'll retreat like a broken wave.
After that, it's a short hike into the Ruhr, then a short jaunt to Berlin. Bon Noël, the war's over by Christmas!

The ending of this episode is pretty applicable to our modern times right now.
I love how in these episodes at the end Indy does that thing every so often where he asks a rhetorical questions and then afterwards puts on a serious and intense face.
"Why would anyone make that up?" Andy, Spartacus, Astrid, and the crew... your work is spot on, relevant, timeless and so important. I cannot heap enough praise and love on all of you! Keep the faith and continue doing good work. Love sharing the history you cover. The series you produce needs to be in every school for ages 12-13 and repeated in 17-18. Parents- feed your kids' brains if your community is too backwards.

I don't know why, but these are some of the hardest episodes to rewatch. The future tragedies feel completely hopeless. But these episodes are endlessly frustrating, full of what ifs. You can see why Hitler thought his Führerprinzip was so smart at this point in the war.

As the journalist and author Espen Eidum discovered by combing through archives, Sweden allowed Germans to move their troops and artillery with the railroad to the battles of Narvik. The Germans continued to use the Swedish railroad until about 1943. This is an important detail few make a note of when they discuss the occupation of Norway.
If im not misstaken the Germans asked to move troops through Sweden to Narvik, but it was Denied. Then the Germans asked if they could move medical personal to Narvik. Which was accepted. But the Medical personal was normal troops that has medical jackets and they "Hided" weapons.

That was the official version, yes. Turns out both the Swedish government and royal family knew all along. A Swedish representative in Berlin saw the soldiers as they boarded the train and informed the Swedish government in advance. Not only did the Swedish government know, but they also vastly underplayed how extensively the railroad was used by Germans.

As I initially stated, clear evidence of the Swedish governments knowledge about this was dug up by Eidum from old archives about 7-8 years ago. Please look it up for yourself. They were well aware of what was going on, and made a conscious decision to allow it to happen.

It doesn't surprise me. Other than Franco's Spain, which was not only fascist but owed Nazi Germany a favour, Sweden was probably the neutral country most favourable to Germany.

At the time of the invation gen. Laake was the man in charge of the Norwegian forces. On the 10th he was asked to resign. He ment that there was no point in fighting the enemy. The order for a general mobilitation was sent out via the postal service and not broadcasted over the radio!
The most amazing bit of information in this episode was when Indy revealed his age. I honestly though he was at least 10 years younger!

I was wondering if you could go into details about comparison of the german military equipment for both the world wars, more specifically, their uniforms. Just superficially judging by their looks they look quite the same, did Germany just use their basic designs from the previous war, or were there any major modifications added to the uniforms?

@@yt45204 and I used to know some one who knew Arne... how ever he is dead. And thanks to Arne , they knew about Operation Barbarossa and that puts the Midsummer crisis in a different light. If you know what your enemy is up to, what do you do to protect your people.
Some of the tensions surrounding Quisling at the time and other parts of the video are played very nicely in the Norwegian film Kongens nei.
For the Grenada invasion in 1983 - travel agencies all around Fort Bragg were cleaned out of tourist maps of the island. And the first US military maps of the Island were made from a combination of photo-reconnaissance images, encyclopedia entries and tourist maps. I remember using a military map that listed the location of every hotel and tourist attraction. As well as getting missions to drive down a road and then report back where it went.
Trivia note when the alert for the invasion occurred none of us believed that it was anything other than a no-notice emergency deployment exercise - until we started getting issued live ammunition. Then there was a mad dash for the dayroom because the TV morning news was about to come on.

I had thought that it would be much easier to get the 1 Mio. subscribers The Great War had gotten ... but even the content, structure, episodes are far better than that of TGW before that did not happen that easy as I had assumed.

The German Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe Enigma codes were fairly easy to break. The Kriegsmarine's codes, on the other hand, would prove far harder to crack.
Luftwaffe Enigma operators were more likely to be careless, things like forgetting to change the settings when they were supposed to.

The German campaign in Central Norway was hampered by the lack of proper roads and infrastructure rather than allied efforts. Norwegian roads between the main cities these days consisted of poor-quality dirt’s roads. April month is early spring or full winter in most part of Norway. The Norwegian Army was slowly mobilized and hoped for a serious allied help. The Norwegian army was disappointed beyond disbelief when they realised that the British army send porly trained territorial army units to their aid. Many of the British soldiers have just a week of training behind them and zero experience in sub artic survival conditions. They were slaughtered by the Germans in a string of battles around a small village called Tretten in central Norway. Most of them was killed wounded or captured by the Germans.
The terrain prevented Norway being swiftly overrun like Denmark had been.

So I actually got some idea of what the map situation is like. I use the tourist maps that Arma 3 has and often use them to plan ops. It’s quite interesting though I suspect these are more detailed.
