Thank you for this fabulous tutorial. No place ever tears now. I remember fabric shopping with my mother as a child. I remember the old machines that the fabric was run through and a little cut was made, after that the clerk TORE the fabric. When buying fat quarters and Jelly Rolls, it's possible to have them off grain. I can see squaring a fat quarter, but if a 2.5" strip is cut off grain, could this be a reason for say a wall hanging twist? This all makes sense to me.
Over the 60 years I've been sewing I never knew about clipping the corners. ? I always prewash my fabric. Should I clip the corners and prewash, OR should I make sure it's on grain first then wash?
Here is how I do it. I take a small piece of the fabric and place it in a clear glass of hot water. I actually have several small clear Ball canning jars that I keep in my studio. If after 2 hours, the water is clear, I do not pre-wash. AND I always wash my quilts with 5-7 Shout Color Catchers safety pinned to a neutral color hand towel. The reason for pinning to a hand towel is that they can easily go out with the water and clog your drain which leads to an expensive repair bill. AND, when I gift or sell a project, I give them a box of Shout Color Catchers and a WRITTEN explanation of the above information and I have them sign it and I keep a copy. I don't want anyone coming back on me! I hope this helps. Donelle
Good info. Great tip to clip the corners before washing to prevent fraying.
Thanks!

On grain first. Then clip corners and pre-wash.
Excellent information! Do you always recommend pre-washing the fabric?
