Her connotation towards the Hawaiian language was negative when she said Hawaiian is a DEAD language. She could have just asked for a translation and not attack the language. Because when you insult the Hawaiian language, you insult the people of Hawaii. the speaker spoke in both Hawaiian and english so I’m not sure why she was bothered by them speaking in Hawaiian.

This was my issue too. If it really mattered to her, ask for a translation or more importantly ask if what was said in English exactly what she said in Hawaiian. She knew very well what she was doing and her intent was to show how anti-Hawaiian she really is. Her FB page seems like opala too, pilau. Trying to quantify the number of speakers to indicate that a language is dead or that because there was a "revitalization" that indicates a dead language. It isn't. And then admitted to GOOGLING it, and somehow she saw it said it was dead? Where? Did she look at the first few hits? No way! She knew what she was doing and what she'd be saying. So it's not true when she said that she didn't mean to offend. Sure, she did! And the Kiaaina also said not to offend? People are way too nice!

When you say a “dead language” you are basically calling our people that we no longer exist or matter in this world we are humans too and all Kanaka Maoli especially any Native have the rights to speak and hear their mother tongue on their own soils even if he/she can or can’t speak Ōlēlo Hawaii.

Please awaken my fellow Kanaka. Article XV, Section 4 established Hawaiian along with English as an official language (the judicial language) of the State of Hawaii, meaning that Olelo Hawaii is to be recognized within everything in our local government on the same level as English. This also means that within the local government every politician in office are supposed to understand BOTH Olelo and English, as both languages in this "state" are legally interchangeable without a translator. That is why in any government setting, a translator is not required. Since they don't understand Olelo, that honestly makes all ( besides who can both Olelo and speak English) unlawful within our local government.

Someone just told me yesterday about interviewing a kupuna in his younger days living on the island of Moloka’i and his trials and tribulations of speaking ‘Olelo Hawai’i in school. In this kupuna’s mo’olelo, he described in detail being physically abused and even had a glass jar thrown at him by teachers for speaking his native tongue. And now this happens? I guess history continues to repeat itself. As a Kanaka Maoli, this makes me sick! E ‘Ola Mau Ka ‘Olelo Hawai’i!!!

The Hawaiian language was at one time but the Hawaiian people on Niihau were brought to Kauai to teach the language. Or so I have been told. Now the Hawaiian school teaches the language but mainly the wealthy families get to attend. Is this correct?

No, a lot of people moved from Ni'ihau to Kauai and may have taught the language. The Hawaiian language had many dialex, and Ni'ihau shared one of them. Modern Hawaiian is now standardized. There are many free Hawaiian immersion schools across the islands and on Kaua'i.
