- It's been a big week on the High Court of Australia, with two ANU College of Law alumni among the bench's newest appointees. The Hon Chief Justice Stephen Gageler AC (BEc '80, LLB (Hons) '82, HonLLD '15) and the Hon Justice Robert Beech-Jones (BSc, LLB (Hons) ’88) were both sworn in to their new roles respectively.
But have you ever wondered what happens when a new judge is sworn in to the highest court of the land? Associate Professor Heather Roberts SFHEA, Australia's foremost expert on judicial swearing-in ceremonies, attended the High Court ceremony on Monday 6 November 2023 and reveals some of the traditions that have endured since the High Court's establishment 120 years ago.
