  • This tutorial is for polishing or shining exotic leather shoes, including alligator, reptile and crocodile shoes. Saphir Medaille d'Or products do an exceptional job of restoring and refreshing exotic shoes.
** Products featured in this video **
    Saphir Reptan Conditioner: www.kirbyallis...
    Pig Bristle Brush: www.kirbyallis...
Saphir Pommadier Cream Shoe Polish: www.kirbyallis...
    Mirror Gloss Wax Polish: www.kirbyallis...
    High-Shine Cotton Chamois: www.kirbyallis...
Step 1 (01:57): Apply Saphir Reptan Conditioner to Shoe
Using a cotton chamois cloth, apply a thick layer of Saphir Reptan onto your shoe. If you have the time, leave the Reptan on your shoe overnight to allow your shoes to absorb the product- if you cannot spare the time, leave it on for at least 2-3 hours before moving to the next step.
Step 2 (03:45): Buff off Reptan Conditioner
Brush off the cream residue using a pig bristle brush or horsehair brush
Step 3 (04:56): Apply Saphir Pommadier Cream Polish
Apply the polish using a cotton chamois cloth to your shoe- use it sparingly. Let it dry for 3-5 minutes before buffing.
Step 4 (04:49): Buff off Cream Polish
Using the same brush that you buffed away the reptan, buff off the cream polish.
Step 5 (06:30): Apply Saphir Mirror Gloss Wax Polish
Use our high-shine cotton chamois to apply the mirror gloss wax polish to build a mirror gloss shine on the toe-box and the hind quarters of the shoes.
Step 6: (08:33) Buff off mirror gloss wax polish
Use chamois and water to buff shoes with polish.

Even as a woman, I find your shoe videos quite helpful. I have many, many pairs of nice shoes that have been neglected for too long. I suddenly realised I have two pairs of vintage exotic leather pumps (snake and alligator) that are in need of some tlc. I have now purchased reptan and shall give them a proper shine. Thank you!

I collect vintage handbags; some of them pricey boa skin bags that need careful and detailed handling for their unique issues. After watching a number of amateur videos that seem a bit sketchy, it would be very helpful to hear from an expert such as yourself, as to care, conditioning and resolving specific problems, like ink stain removal on light colored hides and touching up areas of friction- wear that need help in cleaning up finish and color that have been lost. I think you could pull in a entirely different group by giving some sound guidance to vintage handbag collectors! I know I’d certainly appreciate it! Yes?! Love that you use Saphir products… the best! Thanks!

I watch your videos to keep my 50 years old shoe collection. Following is suggested:
    1. Caption that appears on the screen’s bottom middle odstructs the viewers vision of what you are showing or doing to teach .
    2. Most important is to learn what polish or material you are recommending to be used. You say it once or twice and after that it becomes a struggle to replay and search. It is suggested that the polish lid or package/ box may please kept at a place where the camera could constantly keep it visible to make viewers note it or document to purchase or search their shoe kit….. Thanks!

Would it be a problem to use the Saphir pate de luxe on a crocodile belt? Ive used the Saphir reptan but it provided a much more matte finish then the original finish of the belt. I would like to use a small amount of the pate de luxe soft wax to get back the shine, the saphir hardwax will not be a good idea on a belt i think ?

Hey Kirby Allison I was wondering if I let the Saphir Reptan set in my exotic skin overnight if it’s necessary to use the horsehair brush to buff it out? I did not realize it needed to be brushed so I just packaged it up and put it away can that ruin the conditioning process or the leather itself if the brushing does not occur?

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  7 років тому +2

The Reptan does contain waxes, but it only produces a soft, matte shine. I don't think it would be a problem, but you should always test it on a small area first just to confirm. If you were ever unhappy, the waxes could easily be removed with the Saphir Reno'Mat.

I used the Reptan on a pair of Magnanni lizard shoes but wanted to achieve a more glossy look so I used the Mirror Gloss + Pate de Luxe combo as outlined in the video. The shoes are of "saddle" color which is dark brown on the toe box and then the color changes gradually to a lighter brown throughout the shoe. I put the mirror gloss on the toe box but I'm afraid after about 3 coats in, while there is a very prominent mirror gloss, there is also a white outline in between the lizard scales. How can I remove the coats of mirror gloss? I do have the Reno'Mat but I'm real hesitant to use that on the hand-painted lizards. There was a bit of brown discoloration on the cotton chamois when using the Reptan but not enough to change the shoe's color.

  • @niolma

Dear Kirby, I understand that Reptan is composed of hard waxes and lanolin oil. Does it mean that it is not supposed to be used on ostrich shoes, which should stay away from oil-based care products?

  • @daniellack3559

Kirby ..just a brief question...you stated that the safir pigmented crème polish which you sparingly applied is really for calf skin leather and not exotics..is it right to assume then that safir doesnot stock a pigmented crème polish specially designed for exotics?,,,thanks.

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  7 років тому +1

daniel lack That's correct. There really isn't a reptile-specific pigmented cream polish that Saphir or anyone else makes. So, we recommend primarily using the Saphir Reptan and then supplementing with the Saphir Pommadier Cream Polish when pigment is needed and the Mirror Gloss when a higher-shine is desired.

Kirby, just rewatching this one again and something I have thought about quite often popped into my head and I would love to know what you think.
Looking at your beautiful Chopard and it’s black strap do you match your watch strap colour to your shoes or do you think that’s being too OCD! :)
I know I try to if at all possible but if no then I can live with it or usually end up choosing a watch with a metal strap.
I know one can by quick release spring bars which makes changing leather, fabric or rubber straps easy and quick but I do worry about the long term wears on the lug holes in the case with frequent changing, they were not designed for that.
    Thanks in advance.
