I might one of the ten that would be interested. I know I've seen that album cover in my life but never heard the record. Nice find! In America a rare vinyl find in a thrift store is something playable.
Holy crap, of all records to find for cheap in a charity shop! This is a rare one, and not just because of the label. I also respect your honest review and that you "demystify" it. Either way, amazing find. Congrats!
Yes, it's a scarce record for sure. Some records gain a mystique and grail status just because of their rarity. One of the very rarest on the Vertigo label (simply titled 'Gordon') is also meant to be the very worst. It doesn't stop collectors paying huge sums for it.
@@statictraveller Woah, never heard of it. I will have to check it out now out of curiosity, haha. These grails can be hit or miss. I finally heard the Dr Z album recently and loved it. I can understand why it gets the big bucks. But there are others I've heard and just thought, "I'm glad I don't need to spend money on this."
They are certainly fewer and further between Chris. Just finding records at all in charity shops is hard these days. They have become so popular over here that people are just not donating them anymore.
The boys are happily building a superweapon to take down all the boring livestreams of the VC. It's made from my old stickle bricks and meccano sets, so I don't think it will be very effective.
Amazing that such a gem should slip through in this day and age! I find quite nice records in charity shops from time to time but nothing quite as desirable as that.
@@statictraveller There's a charity shop near me that occasionally throws up nice finds - picked up the Stuart Marson LP there last year (great folk LP)... as soon as their vinyl sifter discovers discogs it'll be game over though 🤔🤪
Hey Alan, Good to see you. Sweet find indeed it sounds to be, albeit being an uneven listening experience for you. I am intrigued either way...esp with Nucleus involved. Thanks for sharing and hope to see more of you on if so inclined. 🙂-Carm
Hey Carm. Always lovely to hear from you. It's a shame the record is not like a Nucleus album with Linda adding vocals. Now, that would be something....
Hi Alan. Good to see you again. That's a mighty fine find. That's why we spend more hours than we care to admit sifting through piles of Harry Seacombe, Perry Como, Barry Manilow albums, etc, that make up the charity shop musical landscape, the hope that we may one day find a diamond in the rough! Ive only ever seen one vertigo swirl in the wild. It was Status Quo pile driver. Not quite as exciting as yours! Well done sir!
Lovely to hear from you, Mark. I hope you're keeping well. Status Quo were my favourite band growing up, and I still enjoy them now. I have the Swirl Piledriver- and it's a much better record than this one!
Life after obscure release: It might have been already been mentioned here, but Linda Hoyle became an art therapist, and was/is a faculty member at University of Western Ontario (Canada).
Hey, Alan. Hope you’re doing well and that the boys are too. I’ll admit I’m not familiar with that record, but still a great find. I would’ve grabbed it too, especially on the Vertigo swirl. Great find.
Hi Nick. Good to hear from you. Yes, I always pick up anything on the Swirl label. They are hard to find. The boys are doing fine. They appeared in a video a few days ago...
Nice to see you back, Alan. I've heard of that album but never heard it. Like a lot of 'rare' albums there's probably a simple reason for it. I leave you to ponder....
Very nice find Alan..I must be honest that I've had a repress of that album for a few years but rarely play it..I much prefer Affinity..I need to give it another go now you've shown it and it's reminded me just how long its' been since I last played it!. Good seeing you. Rob.
Cheers, Rob. It is a disjointed affair to my ear, not the best despite its desirability. Probably for Vertigo completists only. And yes, the Affinity album is a much stronger record.
Although it may be an uneven album which you’ll probably sell it still must’ve been a heart skipping moment when you found this one in the charity shop pile. As ever, good to see you on ye UA-cam. 😊
Thank you, John. Yes, it was a heart skipping moment. I have known about it for over 30 years, but had never heard it in its entirety. I really wanted to like it more...
Hi Alan, man have you been missed in the VC, so glad to see you putting out a video. Great information about this interesting artist and LP. Thank you for sharing and while I'll probably never see it in the wild I will be on the lookout for it going forward. Take care friend.
Wow a very rare find Alan. I love the Affinity album and Nucleus but I have struggled with that Linda Hoyle album. I only have a reissue but it's been on and off of the purge pile over recent years...
I saw that one at a record fair five years ago for about £900.00? Sadly the owner had died and his parents had a table selling his collection. I got into a conversation with them about it, & being terribly English I thought ‘Oh god I’m going to have to buy this record off them now’...I managed to escape with a Pere Ubu record instead.
Alan, I enjoyed your account of the back-story of ''Pieces Of Me''. I listened to it on-line. In my opinion, they released 300 copies of a turd. Sell it and buy something worthwhile like, the complete Steely Dan catalog or an autographed photo of Mike Tomlin.
Perhaps, turd is too kind a word... Yes, it will be going. The idea of an autographed photo of Mike Tomlin has me drooling. The boys already have a mock-up picture, which they throw darts at. It has the torso and head of Davros, creator of the daleks, and the legs of Wonder Woman.
You've not been gone as long as Ipswich Town (and i suspect they won't last more than one season up) so hang around if you can please. Vertigo Swirl i prefer ice cream swirls. Just shows you there are alot of desirable £1 records still about especially classical. Buckinghamshire is packed full of them. Do you think you'll sell it or just file away somewhere and forget about it?
I was glad Ipswich went up. Made a change from Leeds or Southampton. Now, just to win the playoffs and beat them in the Premier League as well... I am hardly finding any records anymore - even classical. There is a real dearth up here. As for this one, I will probably sell it. I used to take pleasure in owning such rarities, but these days, I can't see the point if it doesn't get played.

You're right, often it's more enjoyable finding a rare record than actually listening to it.
That's one of the reasons I like finding rare 45s: no filler!
Exactly, there might be no albums that are perfect from start to finnish, but a seemingly infinite amount of perfect 45's.
