- On the way to the Cat Shrine on Japan's Cat Island, we encountered a cat that started to follow us and wouldn't stop meowing. Locals mentioned that she was the guardian of the Cat Shrine.

The footage was taken during our stay on Tashirojima (田代島), which is a small island in Ishinomaki, Miyagi, Japan. It lies in the Pacific Ocean off the Oshika Peninsula, to the west of Ajishima. It is an inhabited island, although the population is quite small (around 100 people, down from around 1000 people in the 1950s). It has become known as "Cat Island" due to the large stray cat population that thrives as a result of the local belief that feeding cats will bring wealth and good fortune. The cat population is now larger than the human population on the island.

its tail has nothing to do with being a bobtail cat, and no, it's not broken :) I am a vet. when cats are born from a large litter, their tails can become deformed due to lack of room do grow in the womb. it is in no pain and is completely oblivious to it :)

And all 5 of them were born with tails of different lengths and crooks. One of them had a perfect L shape. And the cat I keep now has a tail only 3 inch long even though she was only with 2 brothers in the womb

I'm kinda worried for the cat... I had an internship at an animal shelter and we got a cat that wouldn't stop meowing either, it always took an hour of us being silent for him to stop meowing. he only stopped meowing when eating and he ate like crazy as if he hadn't eaten in months. the reason turned out to be that he had so much worms that he was actively starving to death but didn't look it because his stomach was so full of the parasites. when he got medicine to get rid of parasites he got better and the nonstop meowing was a thing of the past. so I fear this cat has the same problem...

Cats communicate to humans with meowing, and they rarely ever meow to other cats. It really needed some help because look it its tail (it could he been a birth defect tho), and that's why it was following you!

Well, the islands werent supposed to be a tourist attraction, and the japanese cant keep track of all the cats due to them not being spayed & neutered so the populations increased very quickly. They are aware of their condtions however they believe the cats should live normally and die normally without much human interaction.

In my country, people would just kick them if there were cats that meowed a lot like that (which I'm really opposed too, but the animal welfare for street cats and dogs in my country are really looked down upon). The cats here are skinny and lots of them has skin disease. So I can say that they (Japan) took care of the cats in their country better than us...

He is starving that' is the reason why he meows that much , but as many cats there he was also abandoned after many years living with human beings and therefore he misses the contact and interaction with humans, as you can see he is not scared of human beings at all, but he is also truly starving.
I am a veterinarian and an ethologist, specialized in felines (including cats) i have also lived 25 years in Japan and worked on Cat Island under its real name Tashirojima or Tashiro Island and i can assure you that too many cats there are underfed and suffer from several diseases . Also unfortunately , this Island is in the Miyagi prefecture which was the part of Japan where the earthquake and the tsunami 4 years ago were the strongest . The Tsunami hit the island very strongly and sadly over a hundred cats died

Actually, cats meow like that specifically to get humans to take care of them. In big cats, meowing is something only cubs do. Domesticated cats, kitten or adult, meow at a frequency similar to that of a human baby's cry, in order to endear themselves to humans and make them want to care for them. The reason cats are able to do this is because they're domesticated in the first place... unlike dogs, cats domesticated THEMSELVES in order to get regular food and shelter from humans, by killing rodents that would eat grains humans were storing. They scratched our backs, and in return, we scratched theirs (literally and figuratively). And they learned other ways to make humans do things for them, like meowing like a baby.
And that, friend, is why you feel anxious when a cat meows. Because they are actually telling you, in cat speech, "PLEASE TAKE CARE OF ME".
Dogs sort of domesticated themselves too by sticking close to humans and eating their leftovers but not attacking humans. Some people even argue that they changed human behavior too, meaning they "domesticated" us too. Btw not a dog person, I like cats more. But the truth is the truth(well figuratively, since this cant be confirmed 100%).

Felicia Musto Not really. Meowing has a variety of different meaning, but it would be meowing in a much more solemn way if it were depressed, the meows being much slower. It also would not be as active as it is. It's most likely meowing because it's around people, and that it's happy.

cats have learned to get attention by meowing as that's not normally a sound they make with each other. for as much as it was meowing.. it was either desperate for companionship, or in pain.
Edit: I've changed my mind on this a bit as my own cat has started to pull his own tricks along those line... meowing simply because he wants to make a nuisance of himself or was bored. It just goes to show, cats are not always easy to understand.

Cat's don't meow when in pain. The suffer quietly most of the time. And when they do meow in pain, it doesn't sound anything like that. Also, cats do meow to each other. Mine do it all the time. Have you ever even had a cat, bro?
I have one.. though I think that's part of the problem. I only have one so the only other living thing he can talk to is me. He had some issues that needed a vet call but up until that was resolved.. his was meowing ALL the time... now he's a lot more relaxed and quieter, and happier. (more purrs then meows except when I get home from work).
Then he becomes a shoulder cat, regardless of how I feel about that and his claws in my shoulder at the time. :)

Broken tail are common thing happened to cats here in South east Asia. It's not an injury, they just born that way.

I remember once I met a small bobcat kitten that lost its mother that I took in and raised as my own, with legal permission of course. She's very gentle and happy, and she meows nonstop like this cat here.

same in here at my house (south tangerang, Indonesia).. i have a 10 cats at home... they follow me and wouldn't stop meowing everyday.. every time they eat I always look at their cage and I give them their food and drinks every day at home and sometimes I also give them chicken bones and fish heads ... lucky I am a cat lover who often gives food and drink to them and also take care of them at home
