    I loved talking with Maria, an iTalki tutor from Colombia. It is such a great experience talking to tutors from all over the world and surprising them with my Spanish. Maria, thanks for the fun conversation, the games, and for teaching me a little about Colombian cuisine. And thank you for watching, you're awesome :) New videos every Saturday.

    Hola, I'm Nate. I used to not know any Spanish at all, and I had no interest in learning the language. I thought learning Spanish would be boring, a waste of time, and would provide no value to my life. Then I started taking Spanish classes in high school and everything changed for me. I struggled with learning the language a lot at first, but thanks to my teachers and my Spanish speaking friends, they helped make the learning process fun. Within a few months, I had gotten to a conversational level, but more important, I had become a more confident person. The real win for me, though, was the friendships I made and strengthened. I discovered that not only did I have higher self esteem, but being out in the real world with people, whether old friends or new ones I met, made me feel more alive and connected with the world around me. Now it's my goal to create videos that make you smile and inspire you to learn Spanish or another language!

    This discussion is amazing for me to hear! I'm as gringo as they come, engaged to a beautiful Colombian! I've been 6 times now, I've been to Bogotá, Medellin, and Pereira. My favorite is definitely Pereira, as Bogotá and Medellin, especially Bogotá are way too big for me.

A mí, me sonás bien mexicano.

    4:55 very stereotypical places for people to visit and this is exactly why they return home and have a very negative view of people from the US.
    I would suggest avoiding those places specifically and instead visiting places where food, music, natural wonders and culture is FAR better.
    New Orleans, Nashville, Austin, Seattle, for instance.....also the Smokey Mountains, the Grand Canyon, Carlsbad Caverns, Florida Everglades, Yellowstone National Park, Dismals Canyon, Buffalo National River, Great Sand Dunes in Colorado, Atchafalaya Basin.....the list goes on and on.
    Visiting the places that Nate suggests is just visiting large metropolitan cities that are mostly the same with different accents. Its like claiming to "visit France" but only seeing Paris.

    • @A_friendwithoutbenefits
      @A_friendwithoutbenefits Рік тому +1

      you haven’t truly been to France if you only visit Paris, but i would say you’re also missing out to avoid the iconic capital altogether. To really see France you should visit Paris and other places.
      Same with US, surely it’s better to see the famous places Nate mentioned AND the cool places you mentioned, instead of avoiding any of them?

      @@A_friendwithoutbenefits Interesting.... My friends in Nice. Menton, Toulouse and Lyon disagree with you. They all independently told me that when I visit France for 3 weeks, I should not waste more than 2 days in Paris if I want to actually experience France. They all told me that my trip would not be wasted at all if I avoided Paris completely. They all expressed frustration with typical tourists who visit only Paris and then think they know about France. This was what I thought about when hearing Nate's suggestion....that being nothing more than the typical tourist traps that do not reflect the nature of the US at all....not at all.

    • @A_friendwithoutbenefits
      @A_friendwithoutbenefits Рік тому +1

      @@chandie5298 most of my French friends are Parisians and they would disagree with that for sure. And they’ve also told me many French people who live outside of Paris don’t like Paris, so there’s bias involved whether you are pro Paris or against Paris.
      I’m not disputing that going to Paris doesn’t represent the nature of France. I agree,it doesn’t represent the nature of France. I’m disputing whether that misrepresentation is a reason to skip it altogether, when there are still lots of fun touristy things to do.
      I’m British, London doesn’t represent UK at all, it feels like a different country to the rest of the UK, but I would absolutely recommend London to first time visitors to the UK because it’s a fun and pretty city with lots to see and do, much like Paris. But not only London, they should see other places too. Nothing wrong with touristy places so long as you mix that up with more authentic places

      @@A_friendwithoutbenefits So.. .for any rational person... it is obvious what is going on here.
      You have Parisian friends and I have non-Parisian friends and we are, for the most part, trusting the opinion of our friends.
      I'm glad to hear that you are relying on the opinions of your French friends....otherwise it sounded like you are a non-French tourist who visited ONLY Paris and likes to believe he has experienced "France".
      So both of us have biased opinions because we both trust our friends.......which I think is not unreasonable.
      I have friends in no less than 20 non-US countries and we all keep up with each other regularly and have never lost contact. I trust these people who I've known and interacted with for more than a decade for the most recent friend. I have absolutely zero trust in the media regardless of the origin of the media.
      So now that we've established the basis for our bias...... you have to ask yourself the same question but with two different countries.
      Do you believe that if you are a non-US citizen and travel only to NYC, L.A. etc.... that you have learned anything at all about the other suggested cities in my original post. I would claim that if you instead visit the cities I suggested WITHOUT visiting NYC, L.A. etc, you will have experienced a LARGE portion of what the US has to offer....although obviously not everything. But if you ONLY visit the dense metropolitan cities then you learn about nothing else but those things and nothing else about the US.
      You can apply the same to France and Paris vs numerous other cities that might provide a far greater experience of the culture and people.
      I will leave you with that to discover on your own and won't be responding again. I think we've said everything there is to be said and I don't enjoy engaging in YT comment debates when it is simply two people arguing over whose personal opinion is correct.
      I know how I would visit another country to get the most out of the experience and it sounds like you would simply visit the most stereotypical tourist traps.... and that is perfectly fine with me.
      Take care.

      @@chandie5298 Point taken on Paris. On the wider travel point, you missed my point completely. I NEVER once said said you should ONLY visit tourist traps. I said you should mix up popular touristy places with authentic places. Throughout the whole conversation my position has been, why not visit BOTH Nate’s recommendations AND yours? if you read my earlier comments properly you should have realized that. Glad you won’t be responding, but I had to clarify your misunderstanding of my position. I’m all for touristy AND authentic places, not just one or just the other! Bye
