  • Hey guys, NEARD ALERT !! This video has the purpose of trying to show the difference in tone among 9 different vintage DeArmond pickups (4 Mike, 3 Rythm Chief 1000, 2 Rythm Chief 1100).
The first half of the video shows the difference from one pickup to another, always with the same Martin Bronze strings gauge 13.
The second half of the video tries to show the difference that can be achieve with different strings : you'll then be able to hear how the pickup reacts with Thomastik nickel strings flatwound gauge 13 and Martin Bronze Strings gauge 13.
Please share your thoughts in the comments, and also your observations from the tests you've done with your gear in the past etc. I try to understand which pickup takes bronze strings better etc but my conclusions are hard to make, since those dearmond seams pretty different, maybe they don't all age the same way, or they have a sound difference depending on the decade when they were made etc.
I'm noodling on the standard Body and Soul, composed by Edward Heyman, Robert Sour, Frank Eyton and Johnny Green in 1930.
I'm playing a 1944 D'Angelico Excel through a 1968 Fender Princeton Reverb "drip edge" with flat eq. I'm using a Dunlop Tortex pick 1.5mm and the sound is captured by a Zoom Recorder H1.

Greetings, Romain - a very nice review of several different DeArmonds. I love them all - especially in the midrange. They have a crystal-clear frequency response with almost no added coloration. My favorite is the #1100 "Rhythm-Chief" and I've also had a #1000. I've never had the FHC model (for F-hole guitars) but it sounds great as well. These DeArmonds were manufactured right here in my home-state of Ohio, USA in the city of Toledo. Thank you for a very intense comparison of these marvelous pick-ups...nice work, Romain on a beautiful D'Angelico! It would also be nice to hear the DeArmonds with nickel-roundwounds such as LaBella or GHS "Boomers".

hey thanks Fred ! yeah my favourite dearmond for all situation is the rythm chief 1100, although sometimes a Mike can get great result on somee guitars ! the cool thing is that they do work pretty decently with bronze strings, whereas modern pickups don't ! never tried the labella string but i'll try them some day

Hello Romain, All of the pickups sound fantastic with the crystal clear and balanced tone of the Thomatik strings. I have used the Thomastic plectrum strings on my acoustic archtop and found the tone superb but rather quiet. But my reccomendation would be some nice French strings: Philippe Bosset 80/20 brass mediums, especially with the E and B upgraded to .014 and .018 Regards from England. David.

Hey thanks David ! i've etried the Bosset strings but only the gypsy jazz model, so i'll definitely try the brass ones ;)

I like the early 40s pickup with the Martin 13s and the "Nice Jazz" T-shirt. Nice playing throughout BTW

Flatwounds! All pickups sounding more balanced and rounder with flatwounds on the guitar

exactly, but if the acoustic sound is used often, then this teest shows those pickups do a pretty decent job even with bronze strings
