- Our acolyte/thurifer shown swinging the thurible during the postlude.
Postlude: "Feierlicher einzug", being sung on Easter Sunday 2016 at the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Pennington, NJ.

Thurible swinging should be an Olympic event.
I would win the entire thing if it was an Olympic sport

This way of swinging the thurible is specific to the Anglican/Episcopalian tradition, for those who don't know. No, they don't do it that way in a Catholic Mass; just a different tradition.
Most Catholic Churches also have this, but it’s more ceremonial.
I don't think making loops with the censer is particular to Anglican practice. I've seen it in RC parishes and even cathedrals.
@@Tre86Q No, you haven't. The only Catholic churches that swing a thurible that way are the ex-Anglican parishes. It is specific to the Anglican tradition. But feel free to provide proof.

Umm ... I'll thank you not to tell me what I've observed in RC liturgies. "Round-the-world" loops with the censer may have originated in Anglicanism, but the practice isn't unique to the Anglican tradition:

@@Tre86Q You are correct that this practice isn't specific to Episcopal or Anglican-Use Catholic Parishes. Stylistically, it might be done differently in RC parishes (Usually a "360") however it is done - usually as a high ceremonial point. When it goes wrong, however, it really goes wrong. 360's are also done in the Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Churches that follow the Byzantine Tradition.
Really enjoy the technique. Now do the same with 2 thuribles, one each hand.

It's just an option for experienced Thurifers during services in the Episcopal Church. Usually reserved for special services, such as Christmas and Easter.

Pro Gamer Episcopal** I wish there were thurifers in my local Catholic church with vernacular. we have these in Tridentine Rite but boys only ;)
Only boys can or should be alter boys, because they are supposed to follow in the footsteps of the priest. And the priest as called to a celebet and chaste life, is the groom of the church. Therefor a girl could not at all be an alter boy as it goes against who the priest is. Call me sexist, the truth is that is tradition in the Catholic Church and no one should change it.

Being on the alter is a way for young men to begin to discern a religious vocation. The state of the church is sad.

Swinging the thurible in a circular pattern generates more smoke than simply swinging.
It's a celebratory gesture for Easter. You wouldn't do this at a Lenten service.

The point is to spread the smoke from the incense over the entire congregation. It also makes for good theatre.

@@janetplonka8110 not at all. Thats the way they swing the thurible in Anglican, Episcopal, and some Lutheran churches. I think Jesus could care less. It's your heart that matters, not liturgy. The liturgy is for the people.

True enough. At the same time, praise and worship can take an infinite number of forms. If the 360° swings enhance the joy and richness of the liturgy in the honor of God, why deride the practice? Some denominations (e.g., the Church of Christ) forbid the playing of musical instruments in worship because they believe instrumental music distracts the faithful.
