- Fet compressors. The only thing better than one is TWO. The real ones. Not the ones you found on the Pirate Bay! Get it here: stamaudio.com/shop/compressor...
Disclosure: Stam sent me the 78 to review. No cash has changed hands. They can have it back when they pry it from my cold, dead hands!
About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
No power pound on the table. Didn’t insult anyone . Didn’t yell or make angry faces…
This better be a passing fad……😂
If they doing it right he don’t gotta yell
Glen just got back from the dispensary.
You'd think for $4600 they'd throw in shipping for no extra charge.
reverb is filled with a lot of les paul nerds and collecters and thats pocket change for them welcome to the gear world
$4600 is what the original 1178 would cost. This is like 1800USD on the website
This is a certified compressor moment
The Mighty Kompressor?
Because everyone knows, "You Have to Synthesize"
The fact you think people get their pirated software from a torrent search engine tells me you're not one of them!
I have a rev-H 1178 in my rack it was my first real compressor I bought back in 1997 from a music store used for $700!! I also bought a pair of LA3s for $1000 a week later everybody thought optical compressors were out of fashion back then. I still have the 1178 and it works like a charm!
Okay, great video today on your end. But it was made exceptional by your editor. Props to both. I learned a bit. I laughed a lot. Thanx!
Thanks brother! 🦅🦅
Snap. I like the Stan on the overhead. It brightens all of the hits on the cymbals. It's like you can hear what part of the drum stick the drummer is hitting with. Great VID :D
finally drum mixing videos!!! looking forward to those!!!!
Glenn, we need a stereo tube EQ pultec clone like this here.
Stam makes that too. Or the Gainlab Empress
I did not know that at all! Thanks for the heads up! Was thinking I was gonna be stuck buying two huge units. That is prime information, sir! @@Rhuggins
Technically due to a FBI ruling its not illegal to download things in the US, it's only on the person who initially put the file on the internet. And I completely agree
The FBI don't have rulings. 😂
@thundereagle9796 there was a court case so the Supreme Court then lol my bad
😂 I was gonna say the same thing. It's all good.
I have a friend...kind of... who's a junkie & was talking one day about "the DEA passed a law..."
DEA is law enforcement. 😂
@victoresarey4036 So, SC ruling. Nice to know. I've heard so many stories of people receiving copyright act letters for downloading, but was always confused that SWIM never had.
Just because it may not technically be illegal doesn’t mean you won’t lose your internet over it. Don’t do something stupid
Great job Glenn and thank you very much for this one. Rock on 🤘🔥🧡🤘
CHILE MENTIONED 🎉🎉🎉
viva Chile ctmre
Weeeeeeeeena
I like chili cook-offs! Yum yum.
@@RealHomeRecording me too :))))
Chilenos qliao 😂😂😂
Man, i love that Snare!
STAM, I lost count how many times you said Stam.
But you missed one chance.
I remember the first time I used a 1178 was at London Bridge studios up in Seattle area. Home of the Grunge hits of the 90's like pearl jam, sound garden, etc. I was there to get that killer drum sound from there rooms and technique. But what I didn't realize till I got there was one of their secret weapons' was the 1178 on kick and snare. As i was tweaking it you could feel it doing that analog thing I had always wanted in my snare and kick. I was so stoked on that unit... As i went around to other studios throughout the nation I realized this unit was hard to come by. So I am excited that Stam and Pulsar made their own version of this amazing piece of gear for all of use to finally have.
Great review. You've covered a fair bit of ground here. Kind regards - Ward Pike
I 1176 the shit out of live vocals. It's magic.
I would love to see a video on some 500 series preamps so i can really start to tap into external hardware on a budget. And maybe a brief tutorial on what i need and how to send stuff out of my daw to hardware! Love what you do on this show seriously helps me and inspires me to keep working 😊.
UAD just sold 11 essential plugins for $49. You pirates could have gone legit lol!
Link please! 11 plugins for 49.99??? Cant find it!!
you save 49%... its not 49$ though.. around 140 I think.
Great video, Glenn. This is a pretty fertile topic if you ask me. As a suggestion, I think it would be cool if you did a video - or maybe even a series of them - comparing and contrasting FET compressors, diode bridge, variable mu, optical and software compressors. While they all - theoretically - do the same job, they do it in wildly different ways and the results usually do sound surprisingly different from each other. It surprises me a little that you aren't more of a fan of diode bridge compressors like the 2254 or 33609, they have a distinct weight to them that I would imagine would be right at home in metal production.
I built a friend a couple of 1176 units like 10 years ago. Rev A and Rev j. The difference was the Rev A had a class A style preamp circuit. The Rev j had a class AB. They were audibly different to one another. But not once you corrected them with eq.
Stam make great gear but my last order took two years after I was initially told it would take 3 months and had paid in full. The question isn't if they can make something. It's whether or not you'll get your hands on it before they're too arthritic to adjust the dials.
This for sure. I’ve been told my order will be shipped “next week” for almost a year now. I should have asked for a picture of the unit before paying in full lol
I am playing with the Universal Audio 176 audio interface plugins and am loving the compressors, IMO these add so much more over stock compressors. I am actually getting pretty impressed how much extra feel some good compressors and filters can bring to audio. Almost makes me want to do that 85% off deal that image-line is offering for native instruments guitar rig 7 and ozone etc.. the UA stock plugins have me thinking that the NI bundle will be equally as good...
Just got a UA Volt 476 with the built-in real fet compressors. Sounds great so far. This interface seems like a big upgrade from the old Tascam US1600 I've been using for a decade.
That was fun Glen😂
2:22 - it's nice to hear the term "wankery" outside of the UK. Top work Glenn
Stammmmmmm good video Glenn.
I know that I am not forced to watch your videos but can be quiet a second or two before you switch from dry to wet? Also level match in post-production? Crazy.
Cork sniffers...got me there, you rock!
For 500$ more than the Stam, the API T25 is a great stereo fet (with a tube output ) alternative to the 1178
A few years ago you recommended the ART VLA II Pro stereo compressors. I bought one and I like it. The thing is though, well 2 things actually. How do I patch it so I'm running it through my DAW, and 2ndly, what's the chance of you doing a comparison with it and a pair of your Stan Audio compressors so we can here the difference and see if the price matches the gear? Love your show and Fuck you from Ballentrae Ontario. Just north of Stouffville.
I have no idea what these do but that new unit sure looks pretty.
I have the Audioscape version of the 1178 the AS87 and love it!!!
I'm debating between the two tbh
There is also the Universal Audio 2-1176 that was made in early 2000's for around $2500 on the used market.
DAAAAYYYYUMMMM!! GLEEEENN 4:50 holy shit that sounds amazing ....
I can’t take full credit for that. Mr Neve had a big part of it!
Glenn stop being so awesome it's just embarrassing for everyone else!
Hey Glen. I run a studio in Sydney Australia. Learnt a lot from your videos over the years. Been operating for nearly 2 years now. We've been running a presonus 26x26 with 2 behringer ADATs. Anyone able to suggest a suitable upgrade for just under the UA cost? Wanted to check out the new MOTU but they're all out of stock.
Yeah Bob Clearmountain Favorite UREI 1178. Oh Glenn could you do a review of the Stam Audio's MEQP-1A - Analog Tube Equalizer by any chance?
There are lotsa decent FET compressor plugin emulators out there so is an expensive piece of hardware that's a time warp 3 decades or more back in tech worth it for just 2 channels of processing?
GLEEEEEEN im new to the channel and im hooked on binging all of the videos, theyre both informative and so entertaining,
My bands guitarist has bought a 150eur used 7 string multiscale Harley Benton, put grover locking tuners on it and setup real nice, as a bassist ive played a few guitars here and there but thats hands down one of the best ive ever played, including PRS baritones and Fenders, price for performance is unmatched.
also glenn you lost an insane amount of weight over covid as i watch some of the older videos immediately you can notice you were a fatso :D
Hey glenn, I was wondering if you can use a patchbay to expand the I/Os on your audio interface... I want to get more analog gear but my Scarlett 8i6 is already at full use with the gear I already own and before upgrading my interface I was wondering if that was an option. thanks and cheers from Puerto Rico. \m/
I used to use my buddies 1178 a lot back in 2012 and at that time, they could be had for a decent price as the chumps on Gearslutz claimed they were shit.
Piracy is the best , it gives everyone a chance to play or use software to expensive for them
Never been so early, great vid Glenn
That room sounds tasty
Hey man, thumbs up for not talking about pickups for once!😂
My favorite is valley international dynamite. Compressor limiter gate de-esser. Does every thing you need for killer audio.
It does everything that does and is sterio.. I use live mixes, crank mic gain.. no feedback. Super dynamic enhancement. As well as recording. KILLER..
Hey Glenn. I got a question for you if you happen to see this. I'm looking at possibly buying an Ibanez guitar. My question is have you had any experience with recording on Ibanez guitars and what was your opinion? I dont think I've heard you talk much about them.
I may or may not pride myself in my my collection of the best plugins around.... "allegedly"
Thank you Glenn .. I always learn something
Stamiit Glenn, you showing us all this awesome equipment that we can't really afford is killing us..........
Have you tried the Klark Teknik 1176 clone? I know you hated that other KT thing, but Jordan from HMC has a shootout video with a real 1176, some clones and the waves plugin, and they're all very close. The Klark Teknik one, too.
Who knew you were so Stam punny?
I actually have a question about the Northern Mauler. Would that be a good pedal for black metal?
Edit: Never mind. I just read the description and I think that would be an affirmative.
GLENNNNNNMMMMMM
I subscribed because you waited till the end to ask❤
Thank you!
Well said
I think Audio Scape just released one as well!
The Man, the Myth, the Legend!!!
How was 70thousand tons of Metal this year?I could've sworn you said you were going?
he did go!
The only thing I pirated that was worth anything was Maya 4.5. It's was a $7000 dollar program and was the industry standard for computer graphics at the time, think Pixar.
A pirates life for me 🏴☠️
Any experience with Audio-scape Glenn? If you would be so kind…..I’m looking to invest in a 76 compressor and was wondering if you find a particular rev that works best across the board? (Bass/vox/drums) 🙏🏼
Check out the STAM 76 ADG with all three revision circuits built in and fully switchable!
I’ve seen those. Just too impatient and impossible to find used lol. Thanks bubba
@@Vibrahealing AE it is 🤣
Recently got a SA76 D+, sounds absolutely amazing but holy shit did it take a while. I had to literally wait 1.5 years to get it.
Yikes! Glad you finally got it though!
How old is that Anthrax picture you use?
Bro, do you take anything for high cholesterol?
How does it compare with the Audioscape version?
wait I'm confused this thing isn't 100 dollars and made in China
How about the 500 series of the Black Lion’s 1176?
Hey mr home recording guy! Could you please do some content on recording electric drum sets? Edrums are now being taking seriously with big names coming into the game like Pearl, Roland and Alesis have some budget hard hitting sets too.. especially when downloaded with drum samples they sound just like the top end drum kits., maybe incorporating edrums to professional/home studio is something to look forward too. Thanks mr home recording youtube video guy! 😃
This is one of my favorite episodes you have ever done. Thanks…I meant; fuck you, Glenn!
I totally get you man!!!! (just starting video now...) lol
Since 6 central finally
Use the flow Luke!
[In my best Barbosa voice] Oy, lad, lets be clear about your title here! Pirate I can handle, but filthy!? You just...[sniff sniff] yar, you may have a point, sharper than me cutlass.. The deck be yours, Huntmaster!
Isn't every 1176 plugin technically an 1178 with fixed stereo channel link? At least my UAD version deals perfectly with stereo sources after all. 😉
Kind of. The channels are processed exactly the same, which isn't how an analog compressor would sound.
@@RealHomeRecording My old analog dbx 166 did that too when you pressed the "Stereo Couple" button.
Saludos desde Chile! ;)
My soldering hankering is calling for a hairball build.
I dare you to do a tutorial or mix with superior drummer or some other drum software. I’ve always wondered what YOU could do with these programs.
but the stereo ua 1176 is for around 5k in germany on reverb
Just out of curiosity, are there companies that let you rent software for a limited time? Lets say you need an effect for recording or mixdown but you only need it for one track or part and you never plan to use it again.
I think you are referring to a trial use. Several offer 14 day trials
But does it sound better than my Alesis 3630?
Finally got my ssl buss comp from them. Only took a year and a half. 🙄🙄🙄 Very few updates from them too. If you want Stam, make sure you stay on them. Hardware is amazing, but be ready to wait and be very annoyed.
Charge $13K so only 5 people buy it vs charging $1k where 300 people buy it, what makes more money?
Man, hardware will always be more fun and collectable.
But more expensive. What a shame people don't pay for recorded music like they once did.
They don't@@RealHomeRecording? Aww that's a shame...
@@ButWhyMe... not nearly enough.
Field Effect Transistor

So it's just a fancy loudness button. That's I hear.
That's what a compressor is except that for music, you would have to increase and decrease the volume all the time. These units do that task automatically according to presets. That's why it's so good on vocals for example, as we naturally never speak or sing at the same volume (except very well trained & very good singers), so a unit like this will enhance the softer frequencies/harmonics & limit the boomy ones.
It makes quiet things louder and loud things quieter so that the dynamics of a recording are more consistent. It also adds clarity, punch and volume. Every audio recording you’ve ever heard involved some form of compression and most of them involved multiple forms of compression. It’s as important as eq.
good g.a.s., man
Alright Glenn, amp sims vs real amps, bodywood, pickups, all of these are impossible to pick apart in blind tests that you yourself have done in the past. Is this real compressor vs the software equivalent any different? Wanna do one of your blind shootouts with a real comp vs a software comp on a drum track in a full mix, and see if we can pick it?
Yes! Going to blind shoot out the Neve va my best software mixes. Stay tuned.
"Ya guys. Don't spend thousands of dollars on this gear but I have thousands of dollars of gear in my studio."
I was saying, "Boo-urns!"
Don't think the guys that don't spend $400 and a pack of plugins are going to spend $1600 on a single compressor, plus all the shit you need to get out of the box. hell. their 57's probably still have the residue on them from the sticker of the hire company they never returned them to.
We are the best country of Chile brother!
i love that he has the money to buy an 1178 but is smart enough not to
Commission-wise - how much were you paid per 'Stam'?
No cash has changed hands
Like 69 … nice
Cool comp and for some reason I love VU meters needles trembling in action.
I don't know how I feel about all those god Stam aweful jokes...
how to make your boba smaller
fett compressor
God Stammit... you just can't help yourself, can you!?
What the hell Glenn, I can't pirate this.
Eagerly waiting for mine when FedEx can get their fingers out of their a@#% and get it through customs it’s only been nearly 30 days in transit.
