You're running the volume pedal before the drive pedals. Drive pedals compress the signal (limit the dynamics) so you should expect the volume taper to behave like that if you run it before the drive pedals. It's the drive pedals compressing the volume coming out of the volume pedal. The same thing happens with your guitar's volume knob, which is always before the drive pedals. If you run it after the drive pedals, you won't have that problem.
Completely agree with what’s been said about placement, BUT he’s got the Ernie Ball at the same point in the chain when he swaps them out. Shouldn’t the EB be exhibiting the same characteristics as the Dunlop, then?
Yeah I have the dvp5 which is the next size up from this mini. I run it right after dirt so when I lower the volume it keeps my dirt at full volume unlike using the volume knob on the guitar. Which you lose all the gain with the volume on the guitar. Better to go after dirt if you want to keep dirt but at lower volumes. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for the comments
My DVP4 Mini tapers perfectly for swells! You may have your compressor on before the pedal and it's bringing up the volume and affecting your swells. Just a thought!!
I would be interested in hearing the taper if you increase the friction. Being a more compact pedal, the same range of motion would move the lever a greater distance. More friction would hypothetically slow the sweep thus giving it a more consistent taper. Just a thought!
Gotcha that is a good idea. I think I messed with that if I remember correctly, and I didn't notice it drastically improving the sound. But, I may not have done that correctly.
Isn’t that adjustment for when using as an expression pedal, though - not with volume? According to the manual it’s for using when using Expression mode.
I found it very difficult to judge just how much range this pedal has due to no reference playing at full volume. It's possible that your normal volume with everything full on was really loud and the pedal started at a reasonable point. I think a reference point would've been very beneficial for me.
Gotcha; thank you for the feedback. If I do another one of these videos, I will make sure to include that. I thought that I did play at full volume at times, but it has been a while since I have made this video. I could be completely wrong about that. Thanks again!
I like using volume pedals after any type or distortion since this lack of volume can reduce the amount of distortion from the pedal. But keeping the volume pedal before reverbs/delays which can go into the FX-loop
@jamnbreadmusic6622 thoughts 5 years after u posted this and hopefully noticed ur review lies on the fact that it was you that didn't really serve its purpose and the placement of ur pedal among/before others? Kinda shitty to make a phoned in review with next to no knowledge of pedal chains let alone eq or tone and leave it up after 5 years and who knows how many "great review!" comments you've influenced into not getting one of the highest voted and game changing volume pedals of the last 10 years by pros, studio cats, gigging bands and music media from print to geartube
I was about to pull the trigger on that pedal until I saw your review. Glad I did. Such a bummer, I really wish it had a smooth ramp... Now back to square one... Good quality mini passive volume pedal that works smoothly... If anyone has an idea please hit me up!
@@Jack-si2ig Nope, but I contacted Dunlop, apparently, it does have a smooth ramp if powered correctly (long story short but I have the whole explanation). So maybe the best thing is to try it out for youself.
I encountered that jump in volume too. I set the switch at the back to ring and turns on the hi frequency of my audio interface and yeah works better than my ernie ball. I guess it needs more power to it since there’s no power supply for this pedal.
I filmed this in an old room that I had recently moved into. So, that was a door leading to an empty small closet. I finally got the door fixed up, lol.
I suppose it should be fine with pretty much any guitar since it is functioning as a volume pedal in this instance. You would probably still need to run it into an amplifier for better results, but this may work out if you are going directly into a sound system or something similar as well. I haven't tried this; so you may want to do some research on that.

This.
You should also put it after a compressor for the same reason.

It's up I to you. I play pedal steel. We everyone runs it first

I fully agree with this review
I really liked the intro, you're very creative. pls don't stop making videos.

The blue box under the dip switches is used to adjust the taper

very nice review. thanks
No problem; glad to help!

Really an excellent cideo. Thank you! I'm shopping for a small volume pedal so this really helps.
I agree with what you say-not a very good volume pedal. I'm looking for an expression pedal though. Thanks for posting, Very informative.
Thank you for the feedback; glad that the video could help! Hope you find the pedal that you need!

Did you find one?

One more thing place it after dirt pedals and before modulation pedals. Works excellent for me.
Great review!
Does it make a big difference to have this pedal after a buffer in terms of tone suck?
What happened to your door handle?
I filmed this in an old room that I had recently moved into. So, that was a door leading to an empty small closet. I finally got the door fixed up, lol.
How were you getting those sweet octave effects in the intro. Not sure I see a POG type of pedal there.
Dan Pratt Sounds like a shimmer reverb to me!
i think its from the keeley caverns
At 7:20 was that Made Too Pretty by As Cities Burn?
Whether he knows it or not, that's definitely made too pretty ha
I haven't heard that song before as far as I know, but it sounds really similar to that, ha ha.
you can adjust the heal
Is that a glory hole on your door lol?
Lol, I finally got that door knob replaced.
For real, ty for this video, i almost buy this pedal, gonna suscribe (sorry if my english sucks)
No problem; thank you for subscribing! And, no problem; thanks for watching!
You dont like the linear pot in the dunlop..You like the Audio taper of the EB..Thats the difference
Is there a pot that will offer an audio taper or is that what the pot is called? Thanks
I have same problem..my valeton ep 1 mini wah and volume... Its not smooth..
Will it work well on an electroacoustic guitar?
I suppose it should be fine with pretty much any guitar since it is functioning as a volume pedal in this instance. Is there an internal trim pot to adjust the taper?
Yes. Internal pot can be adjusted up to 25k.

Volume pedal after dirt bro
Volume pedal should be after your distortion anyways.
Lol noobs
