Kawasaki Mule 500 KAF300 Clutch and Engine Removal - Part 3

- In this video, we remove the engine from the 1993 Kawasaki Mule 500 KAF300B1, which involved removing the primary clutch and the secondary clutch, both of which required some persuasion and special tools.
Thank you for showing how to remove the clutches! One or both of the clutches are stuck on our mule, so the gearbox is getting power at idle, causing it to not want to go into gear without a wild amount of grinding in the gears. Thankfully I won’t need to pull the engine.
You’re very welcome! I’ll be anxious to hear back with your diagnosis of the problem. I have the service manuals and part list for the Mule 500, so let me know if you need me to look up something.
@@budgetprojectsbydavid5263 finally got around to taking the mule clutch apart. Found the problem. the drive clutch is stuck in the run position. There’s a little plate inside that holds 3 articulating arms and one of them has snapped off the plate, and is bent inwards. Which prevents the clutch from returning to the idle position.
Nice work. Are you going to be able to fix it or will you have to replace it?
@@budgetprojectsbydavid5263 we had to replace it. By the time we replaced the spider and the weights and some other misc parts inside the clutch assembly, we could have just found a new one. Ended up going with an aftermarket replacement to save a few hundred bucks. But it came out great. Mule goes into gear with no grinding.
Sorry for the late response, never saw the notification and saw this video in my watch again section so figured I’d see if you did respond.
That’s great! If you don’t mind me asking, what brand aftermarket did you go with and what did it cost you?
4:18 Excellent use of the double-extension ratchet!
😂 Thanks, John. All of the bolts on the sides of the Mule are a little awkward because of the frame. Now that the 290D engine has been removed, everything is easier to access.
Thank you for making this video!! I was able to use it to remove the pulleys to allow for more room to get to the rounded off oil drain plug and get it off. I was wondering if your drive belt had any identification numbers on it? As I am looking for a replacement belt. Thanks again for making this video, it was really helpful.
Hi Sean, I’m glad you liked the video. The belt I took off says “Comet Industries” and has the numbers 300623 704041. Per my parts book, it’s Kawasaki 59011-1055. Good luck!
I'm looking for the part number for the left hand thread bolt that goes in the secondary clutch (driven clutch or the one on the axel not the engine). Any idea what the part number is or where I could find one that will work? Thanks!
Hi Quinn, that part number is 92150-1687.
I had to replace that one as well. When i reassembled the secondary clutch, I tried torquing to spec and it sheared before making it there. Dumb mistake on my part. The second time around, i just used my own judgment as to how much to tighten and it has been fine.
Hey there could you throw out a link to where you got that flywheel pulley holder tool? I was trying to find a makeshift way to plug those holes up, but not too confident in it.
I was actually able to rig it up with a FAN CLUTCH HOLDING Tool & 2 Allen wrenches to fit the holes and apply leverage
Man, that’s awesome! Just saw your message. I have been at the lake without good service. I was going to find where i got the tool when i got home. Sorry, i couldn’t be more helpful, but glad you figured that out! Also, thanks for sharing with the group!
Here’s the one that I purchased from ebay: www.ebay.com/itm/UNIVERSAL-HOLDER-TOOL-ROTOR-MAGNETO-FLYWHEEL-EQUIVALENT-KAWASAKI-57001-1605-/151748608773?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0
Kawasaki part no. 57001-1605
@@budgetprojectsbydavid5263 thanks for getting back to me Dave. 1 more thing that's been eluding me. Where can I find a gasket that will fit that 1/4 turn gas cap?
That gasket comes with the cap as an assembly, kawasaki part no. 51048-1004, or you can get it separately as part no. 51059-006.
