Unfortunately I have to live with American units because live here. I'd love to switch to metric for daily life but it's not going to happen anytime soon. But I do what I can.

Is this easier than just wrapping the wire around a small dowel?

That's a good idea too. Anything is better than pulling on bare wire. I like the plastic handle as a more permanent solution, but can't knock the simplicity of the dowel.

What gauge wire do you use? I went to Home Depot and they have a few different sizes for picture hanging wire. Great video to. I was just about to purchase D-splicer tool. I would have been very sick if I had ordered and then seen your video. The tool is 23.00, what a savings. Thanks for the Video.

Mine is solid (as opposed to stranded) and somewhere in the 24-26 gauge range, which puts it around 20 pound load give or take.

If you can or have access to a dentist or dentist shop. I would recommend the wire they use for making braces. It is some high grade stainless with some pretty high strength and bend specs and comes in quite many gauges and usually in a 50m spool.

What about braid on braid rope?

Could probably make the handle out of stick epoxy?

That should work just as well. Great idea!

Fimo or Sculpey should also work fine. I'd thought about Proto Putty (ua-cam.com/video/2bZDS5uPGGk/v-deo.html) for a rubbery handle, but I don't know that it would grip the wire well. Maybe a small plastic handle, or wrap the wire around a hard object, then cover it with Proto Putty for a softer grip.
